So, I have a question for you guys. What class should I pick?
I'm starting in a new group on Sunday and we're making our characters up until then and I can't decide what I should do. Right now the rest of the group consists of a Tiefling Bard, Vedalken Artificer, and a Warforged Cleric.
I'm going to be a half Elf. I want to do something that's mostly melee but I'm up do doing some spellcasting not an insane amount though.
My half elfs main backstory is that she left her elven village to look for adventure but it didn't go well and she ended up being an indentured servant and long story shot get picked up by a pirate crew she fall in love with one of them gets married, and has a kid and the crew gets taken captive. her husband and most of the crew is hung and her kid is taken from her. She's searching for her child now. That's where the campaign starts.
We're starting at level one and here are my ideas so far:
Just a standard fighter but that can be boring. If i did fighter I'll probably multiclass as well
A hexblade Warlock I could spell cast if i wanted to and do some damage and also use melee weapons and be in the thick of it. But my biggest concern with that is the lower HP Dice
A barbarian that will eventually go into the path of the beast. She's a tiny half elf so I don't know how this would go over.
ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS WILL BE APPRECIATED!! PLEASE HELP ME! I WANT A BALANCED GROUP BUT STILL WANT TO HAVE FUN!!
You could start out as a rogue because of the whole pirate influence and then eventually choose Swashbuckler as subclass, as well as multi classing into barbarian because of the idea of your rage at having your family taken from you. Or the other way around, or something completely different! Just a suggestion, done more from a story point of view than actual practical mechanics.
It would leave you a bit light on melee, but sneak attacks can still deal a lot of damage comparatively at lower levels.
Half elves have a CHA bonus, so they make good warlocks, sorcerers, bards, or paladins. I for one had a lot of fun playing my half-elf Storm Sorcerer, but if you're looking for something more fightey then I'd go for hexblade or Palladin.
Pally, maybe fighter. Barb could work, like saying she's upset that her child is lost? And you can put +1 into con and strength, and can dump stat charisma, but still have it not negative.

The hexblade warlock is good for a half-elf character, plus you can get a higher AC because you get proficiency with Medium armor (you ain't squishy). I would reccomend.
My sister actually has a full-elf barbarian and it works pretty well for her.

True, but they're not like wizards, who base all their attacks on spell casting
Bards don't attack most of the time with their spells, they barely get damaging spells. Bards are extremely based on spellcasting, but more control and utility than straight up "fireball" and "thunderwave"
Bards are as much spellcasters (maybe more) than wizards, and they can even take damaging spells from any class at specific levels so they can actually be a blaster if they want.

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
Swashbuckler gets a boost from the charisma, I would say it makes a fine addition to the party comp. If you want a hard to hit damage dealer. Going more tanky would lean towards paladin, little cast little combat would be a strong hexblade warlock option, blast blast sorcerer. Any idea what subclasses the other folks are leaning towards? If the bard is going more to the caster side you could go with college of blades and have pretty good combat potential. Depending on Cleric and artificer, they could be pretty durable depending on subclass so that might lean you away from them.
I still dig the swashbuckler though.

Bards aren't like wizards, but that's because they're primarily healers/support like druids and clerics? So, unless you consider cleric to not do that much spellcasting...

If you want to go with a less boring Fighter, Battlemaster comes with a lot of options built in. They're pretty fun.
Hexblades... aren't as damage-casty as you think. Blade'locks spend most of their spells and invocations on things like Hex and saving a spot for a Smite. If you want to go the route of using melee weapons while still casting some damage spells on occasion, I recommend the wizard subclass Bladesinger, from the Sword Coast guide.
By Path of the Beast, I'm going to assume you mean totem. Now, Barbarians focus on Strength and Constituion, primarily. People might call shinanigans if you're trying to say you're a small character with high physical stats, and you're completely missing out on using your Charisma for anything worth mentioning.
Right now, you have three other players, two of which are from mainly support/healer classes (bard, cleric) and one class that's a support-crafter. Your group lacks, well, anything beyond support really. At this point, I'm going to suggest druid just to round it out.

You should maybe not think of the classes in terms of clichés. I don't mean that as an insult.
You say you don't know how it would go over playing a tiny half-elf as a barbarian. Sure, if you think of Barbarians as Conan, then maybe not (and they way we think of Conan-- like the way we think about Rambo-- doesn't really reflect the reality of Conan.) But Barbarian doesn't have to be a berserker. Was Ghenghis Khan a barbarian? Probably. He'd be a barbarian whose key attributes were intellect and willpower. Rage can represent an indomitable will too: they don't take half damage because they so angry they don't feel the pain. They take half-damage because they refuse to die. Fierce determination can be the strength of your barbarian.
Likewise, fighters have a ton of tactical options in 5e. At least as many as paladins or other non-primary spellcasters. And actually, a fighter could be just what this party needs. In terms of being more boring thematically? You get out of a character what you put in. No class is going to make it a good or bad character (unless you really hate the mechanics of a class.)

Druids are far from simple and easy. They're arguable the most complicated class in 5e, with wild shape's rules, the progression of beasts you can turn into, and how you can change your whole spells prepared each day for any other spell on you spell list (whole list) each long rest.
