So, the newest One DnD release has indicated that Artificers will not be included because they are not a PHB class. I feel that this should be the moment Wizards makes them one and so includes them in the updated rules. Otherwise, until they do, Artificers will always be slightly out of step with the new rule set. I also feel they have been around long enough that they are no longer an expansion class and should just become one of the standard classes.
Thoughts? Do we see Wizards simply publishing Artificer in the first expansion (whenever that is)? Or languishing behind for 2-3 years after the release of the new PHB?
They are being careful with their language. It is not part of the current PHB, therefore not included in the current UA materials. I don't think they've said either way if it'll be in the new PHB. They just keep dancing around it.
the did group them as experts so they are being thought about in the overall project I would guess as it is the most recently designed class there isn't as far to go with transitioning artificiers into 1DND.
I wouldn't be surprised if One DND only handles updates to PHB content, the same way MMM avoided revamping the PHB races seeming to save that for One DND.

Yeah, I do think they'll probably publish Artificers in an expansion, but honestly, I was hoping they'd be in the core rules. Artificers may be kind of complicated, but so far, 1DD's playtesters have handled complexity quite well, and I don't see why they couldn't make Artificer a bit simpler while keeping the overall design. So yeah, I'm pretty disappointed that we're not gonna see Artificer in the core rules of the next edition unless something drastic changes.
Honestly, I would like them to replace Sorcerer as the third Mage class, and not just chill as another Expert. Artificers specialize in artisan tools and the like. Expertise is skill based. Artificers really don't make sense to me to be Experts under the current paradigm.
If they're planning to include it, but don't think the Artificer needs any substantive mechanical change of its own, then they wouldn't put it into playtest at this point; it would just be a distraction from the things they want people to focus on. Stuff that might be changed, such as exactly how its spells are prepared, would be tested with the other classes, and integrated into the Artificer once it's settled.
Given what has been seen Artificer will not be making the PHB of one D&D but are being considered where they will be placed within it, which to me suggests that they will be included in supplemental material after the PHB of one D&D, however current play tests and material are strictly related to the initial release, as far as I see it.
No, they shouldn't be part of it. I like Artificers, and have played several. But it is an exotic class that will have to be included later in some supplement.

They kinda don't fit anywhere else. They aren't full casters, so making them mages would be weird. They aren't warriors, especially as a base class. They aren't clerics. Exports just kind of fits by default with their focus on tools.
Yes. I don't really like them but with their rule of not adding materials in supplements for things in other supplements kind of makes it hard for additional sub classes to come out for them. Yeah feats/spells will fit on their lists now but that isn't all that comes out for a class.
My impression is that they're being ambiguous about the inclusion of the Artificer in the new PHB to keep their options open. It may ultimately come down to the page count of the new PHB and how much space they have for another class.
That said, I'm in favor of including the Artificer in the PHB. It's been in the game for three editions now, and the 5e version of it is not more complex than many of the other base classes. The setting-agnostic stance they're moving towards also means they can sidestep the issue of whether or not the Artificer "fits" with any given setting. On top of that, as MyDudeicus points out, having a base class in a supplement does not mesh well with their design philosophies, and it's made the Artificer the odd one out in 5e so far.

see I disagree here, mainly because they are the only "exotic" class on account of they are the only non PHB class. If Wizards had loads of other classes then I would agree but given they have existed a long time now in the game it feels they should be included from day one for all those players who want to keep playing them, but, will have to shoehorn them in alongside the new rules.
I would love for artificers to be in the PHB. They are kind of a cool class. I have not played them myself, but I have played in a party with one. I can see no reason why to exclude them really, unless they intend to take the Pathfinder route and make a lot of new classes available in supplemental material.

Well, there are races like the gith that have been in the game since AD&D 2nd edition and therefore don't have to appear in the PHB.
My point in calling it "exotic" is that it's a class that doesn't fit very well into core D&D. That's not to say that it shouldn't be in the game, but in the PHB it seems very strange to me. Plus it messes up the symmetry of 3 classes per group.
My opinion is that WotC doesn't quite know what to do with them. I think they see problems to include it in the PHB, if they hadn't come out in the last UA. But neither is she convinced to leave them out. So we'll see what they do with them.
Maybe they'll put out a supplement later with a fourth class for each group. We'll see.
People are usually pretty miffed if a new edition comes out and they can not play their favorite setting fully until a updated version of their setting book comes out. And the fluff mostly remains the same only mechanics change.
So I hope they might release conversion guides for popular settings, and the artificer would be included in the Eberon conversion guide.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Artificer moved into the PHB, but I don't think it requires as much change/playtest as the older PHB classes do.

BoringBard's long and tedious posts somehow manage to enrapture audiences. How? Because he used Charm Person, the #1 bard spell!
