For me it's Mark of Warding Dwarf if Eberron content is allowed. If not, Mountain Dwarf if Tasha options are allowed. Failing that, maybe Aasimar but if all that fails then High Elf.
Mark of Warding: because you get free cast of Mage Armor which is superior to most light armour. With point buy and without Tasha options I'd have +2 Dex, +3 Int which with +3 Mage Armor means Bladesong grants an AC of 18, the equivalent of full Plate, at only level 2. If Tasha's is allowed then I'd have +3 Dex and +3 Int, for a total AC 19. And since that Mage Armour is free from racial I could cast Shield, for temporary +5 AC up to 24 for a round when needed. On top of that it gives access to Armor of Agathys as well.
Mountain Dwarf with Tasha's provides +2 to any 2 ability scores, giving you more to spread around. Plus you can exchange the dwarven weapon profs with other weapons.
Aasimar just for some flight and healing.
High Elf because you get perception, extra weapon profs, and free cantrip.
Half-Orc isn't a bad alternative to the above, with things like relentless endurance and savage attacks.

I’d like to throw the MotM Earth Genasi into the mix as well. Not being hindered by difficult terrain and free blade ward on a subclass that can actually make good use of it is nothing to sneeze at.
If you can do custom stats (you choose the bonuses), either tortle or if you are ok dumping DEX (to 10 or 8) to max CON (I am) for CON based armor, Loxodon, which also has advantage against being charmed or frightened and a trunk. So, if you have your hands full (a weapon and an Arcane Grimoire or wand of war mage), you can hold the wand or grimoire in your trunk and weapon in one hand and still have a hard free for spellcasting. Or hold all three and get the warcaster feat.
Still talking custom stats, other good options are mountain dwarf for the two +2 stats, poison resistance, and medium armor or old school gith for the medium armor, more weapons options, Githyanki psionics, and extra skill/tool.
You could just stick with your light armor (or get one level in cleric as a start) and take the yuan-ti version with the poison immunity and old school magic resistance, or the old school satyr for the magic resistance and faster movement.
I think its the tortle

Food, Scifi/fantasy, anime, DND 5E and OSR geek.
Unusual choice, maybe, but MotM Goblin. BA Disengage is underrated for Bladesinger, and all the other racial features also benefit.
(DDB sent me a direct notification for this thread. I'm not sure why, but since I've been led to it I might as well offer an opinion.)

Nope. (Almost everyone on this thread is very active, so if I were I'd be getting A LOT more notifications than just this one, lol.)
