Posted Nov 27, 2021seems like the dire wolf is really plain compared to lets say a pseudodragon the pseudodragon can talk and do all kinds of stuff. The dire wold is just like a bigger wolf? is there a way to make this thing more interesting? I'm creating a tabaxi wizard/ fighter and I'm multiclassing into a ranger to get the beastmaster thing. I was thinking my pseudodragon could be my well magical familiar and the wolf would be there for well battles and stuff. So to recap, is there a way to make the dire wolf more interesting for my wizard fighter who has two animal familiars?

Posted Dec 31, 2021As a GM when encountering a creature I always try and work in something extra. Some strange ability that is unique to this particular creature. My particular dire wolf pack that I am using have an added chameleon like ability. A variant of Dire Wolf that just makes them that much more scary and sneaky. Also if you befriend one, tame one, or call one as a steed/familiar, well imagine the benefits! I love homebrewing my monsters.

Posted Jan 26, 2022I propose a new origin to "Dire" creatures rather than emulating the evolutionary origins of our own reality.
If a werewolf mates with a humanoid the offspring is also a lycanthrope, but, when a "were" creature mates in their animal form with a non-human creature the offspring is a "dire" creature. These offspring can pass on the "dire" genetic trait but not lycanthropy.
