Ooze Cube. The cube takes up its entire space. Other creatures can enter the space, but a creature that does so is subjected to the cube's Engulf and has disadvantage on the saving throw.
Creatures inside the cube can be seen but have total cover.
A creature within 5 feet of the cube can take an action to pull a creature or object out of the cube. Doing so requires a successful DC 12 Strength check, and the creature making the attempt takes 10 (3d6) acid damage.
The cube can hold only one Large creature or up to four Medium or smaller creatures inside it at a time.
Transparent. Even when the cube is in plain sight, it takes a successful DC 15 Wisdom (Perception) check to spot a cube that has neither moved nor attacked. A creature that tries to enter the cube's space while unaware of the cube is surprised by the cube.
Pseudopod. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 10 (3d6) acid damage.
Engulf. The cube moves up to its speed. While doing so, it can enter Large or smaller creatures' spaces. Whenever the cube enters a creature's space, the creature must make a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw.
On a successful save, the creature can choose to be pushed 5 feet back or to the side of the cube. A creature that chooses not to be pushed suffers the consequences of a failed saving throw.
On a failed save, the cube enters the creature's space, and the creature takes 10 (3d6) acid damage and is engulfed. The engulfed creature can't breathe, is restrained, and takes 21 (6d6) acid damage at the start of each of the cube's turns. When the cube moves, the engulfed creature moves with it.
An engulfed creature can try to escape by taking an action to make a DC 12 Strength check. On a success, the creature escapes and enters a space of its choice within 5 feet of the cube.
I would think it would just sort of... deflate I guess?
I would just say that whatever magical force was holding this large gelatinous form together works to retain the cuboidal shape but begins to faulter as the smooth sides and straight edges begin to leak and ooze in places, and like a water filled baloon, the 'skin' of the creature erupts. Torrents of acidic sludge pound to the floor but seem to be absorbed by the ground that is left potted and pocked from the acid.
Can a GC squeeze through small spaces like other oozes? Not specified in the text.
Went and read some older editions stuff. Yes, they can squeeze through small spaces.
It is not stated in 5e statblock, so it can squeze in spaces one size smaller, as a general rule. Older editions stuff does not work in 5e
I would make the following changes in order to make the Gelatinous Cube more realistic and menacing:
Damage Immunities: acid, bludgeoning, poison
Damage Resistances: lightning, piercing, slashing
A Gelatinous Cube regains 1d12 hit points at the beginning of its turn from any damage sources to which is is resistant.
Challenge Rating: 4 (1100 XP)
i have a pet one its 1 foot tall and long
Sounds like a horror movie description.
I will try to eat cube
Cube eat you. Cube carry you. Cube damage you. Get out of cube now.
except when it does.
There is a useful video series from a youtube channel 'MrRhexx' that goes over historic and less known facts about creatures.
One of the videos is on the gelatinous cube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55_mYPb2uQg
Around 5 minutes in they mention a bit about water, and I cannot remember the specifics but I think they go over some additional points about water as well. Enjoy :)
you connot breath inside the cube
I ran a group of my son's friends through a dungeon this afternoon. They started with character amnesia and nothing but a jumpsuit. After 3hrs of using improvised weapons from broken chests and rocks pried from the walls, they came upon a dimly lit pit to the side of their corridor. It was small, only 5'x10', but 30' deep with about 10' of "water" at the bottom. Clearly visible was a trove! 3 Swords, a couple of daggers, 2 shields, and gold pieces piled all over the bottom. Well, 3 of the five shoved past each other to dive into the "water" while arguing over what things they were swimming down to grab first......yup, the water was welcoming, if a bit more viscous than they imagined. 3d6 acid entry fee plus 6d6 on the Cube's turn = three quick deaths. The greed trap, it never gets old!
when you kill them, can the split apart into small cubes, like a Minecraft slime?
Would someone with misty step who is engulfed be able to Bamf out?
It’s tricky because Misty Step requires a verbal component, and so you might start drowning if you open your mouth to speak.
I’d ask for a concentration check, at least.
This is probably a dumb question but Ive only been playing for a year and have never used one of these in my campaigns, but in what ways can these be damaged? Are they immune to slashing damage and stuff since they absorb things?
I homebrewed this so that it splits and has half the HP each when it takes slashing damage.
Sneak behind players, unseen.
