What's in Monsters of the Multiverse?
The first thing you’ll notice is an array of updated races, some with modified or improved abilities, and some with new ones! Those little kobolds have just become a lot mightier! You'll also find monsters have been improved to make the lives of Dungeon Masters easier when running combat. For example, some monsters have seen changes to streamline spellcasting. Others have received buffs to their damage and resilience to help you better challenge your adventurers. New and updated lore also shifts focus away from any one particular world and instead toward the wider Dungeons & Dragons multiverse. All of this combines to present a variety of options that empower DMs and players to tell the stories they want to tell!

What is going to happen if I own all of the existing content from Volo's Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes and don't buy Monsters of the Multiverse?
You won’t need to take any action on older content, as it will not be removed from your account, be hidden from you, or have its statistics changed! You will notice, however, older content being designated as legacy content. For example, a legacy badge (LegacyThis doesn't reflect the latest rules and lore.Learn More) can be seen when navigating to a monster’s statistics page or when hovering over a monster tooltip.
You will also see race naming conventions updated to denote “(Legacy)” on the Races page and a legacy badge appearing next to old subraces on race pages. In the character builder, old races can be identified by the book source shown below their name.
Will two versions of every monster be maintained on D&D Beyond?
If you own the old content and purchase the new content, yes, you will have two different versions of official content. Older content has been designated as legacy content.
Will the character races in Monsters of the Multiverse be available in addition to the old versions?
Character races presented in this new book are new versions of existing character races. Purchasing Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse will not replace older character races, but rather, will provide new ones with updates compared to the originals. If you want to use the new version of the tabaxi, for example, you will need to purchase the new book, or purchase the tabaxi character race from the book’s additional purchase options in our Marketplace.
If you already own a character race that has been updated in the new title, you will continue to have access to them in their current state; that character race will not be changed or updated except to designate it as legacy content.
Will I be able to share older content or access older content in a campaign?
Yes! If you are a Master-tier subscriber and own the older content, you can still share it in new and existing campaigns. Similarly, if you are accessing shared content in a campaign from a Master-tier subscriber, that content will still be accessible.
Will I still have access to a character created using Volo's Guide to Monsters or Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes?
Yes! If you own that book you will still have access to that race and character. Any existing characters will not be changed with the release of Monsters of the Multiverse. Players who purchase Monsters of the Multiverse will be able to update their characters themselves by selecting the new version of a race in the character builder.
If I want one of my characters to use the new content in Monsters of the Multiverse, but not another, will that be possible?
If your Dungeon Master allows it, then yes. If the game hasn’t started yet, this would be perfect to bring up during your session zero.
I built an encounter with monsters from my Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes and Volo's Guide to Monsters purchases. Will that still be usable after May 17 if I don't buy Monsters of the Multiverse?
Absolutely! Your previously owned content is not being removed from your account. Your encounter, and the monsters in it, will remain intact. In the Encounters tool, you may notice a legacy badge (LegacyThis doesn't reflect the latest rules and lore.Learn More) appearing next to monsters’ names to identify them as content from older books.
Will I have to purchase Monsters of Multiverse on D&D Beyond even if I already own Volo’s Guide to Monsters and/or Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes?
Whatever book content you already own on each digital platform will still be accessible for your use, and to gain access to both the new and updated content in Monsters of Multiverse, you will need to purchase Monsters of Multiverse.

Can anyone tell me why the Eberron Shifter isn't flagged as Legacy content? It can't be an Eberron licence issue or something, because the Eberron Changeling is.
It is:
Ah, I see. Then I'm confused, because the "show legacy content" toggle on the character builder doesn't hide the Eberron Shifter.
THIS! Already own 2/3 of the content, NO DISCOUNT FOR PREVIOUSLY PURCHASED CONTENT!!! :( Would like to get the other third, but refuse to reward such blood-sucking behavior.

Everyone should expect this to happen with other books too.
Here's the operative part of how individual purchase discounts work
Credit has only ever applied within a given source and never between sources. So setting aside that legacy and non legacy content are actually distinct game elements, D&D Beyond hasn't ever offered credit on Source B that contains reprints from Source B
So changing any content makes all the prior purchases ineligible - even if some haven't changed.
Copying old content into a new sourcebook also makes those purchases ineligible.
That's what I expect to see with all the books in the future.
You misunderstand; the options printed in Mordenkainen Presents; Monsters of the Multiverse are not reprints, they are concurrent options which is why the Legacy tag exists.
However, even if they were reprints the same thing would apply that has always applied; content from book A only grants credit towards book A, not any book that reprints content from book A. This has always been the case are there are no plans at this time to change that.
EXACTLY. Taking materials from two prior sourcebooks and hashing them into two new sourcebooks with a few new bits is NOT creation. It is marketing BS designed to force users who already had some/all of the content to buy two brand new sourcebooks for full price.
Everyone should expect this to happen with One D&D and everything else.
I do not believe that is the situation, as other Eberron content that has been categorised as legacy does disappear when the "legacy" toggle is switched, such as the previous version of the Changeling. The "Eberron" toggle allows Eberron options to be used in the character builder, while the "Legacy" toggle hides any legacy content in the options available. The legacy Shifter is unique in that it is not hidden by the legacy filter, something that has still not been fixed. What's also strange is that, on the Character Builder, other legacy races have "legacy" tags next to their name, while the legacy shifter doesn't. I had though that because it is the only legacy race from eberron with subraces that that was the issue, but the legacy Aasimar also had subraces, and that is hidden perfectly fine by the toggle. It has been a long time at this point, so I guess they just aren't going to get around to it.
In looking at the character builder, the same thing happens with the Aasimar. What appears to be the issue is that for any races that formerly had subraces (and did not appear in the PHB), the little "flag" area that would be covered by "Legacy" is covered by a numeric indicating how many subraces there are. In the case of both Aasimar and Shifter it's a "(4)." So the "flag" area is already in use to denote the number of subraces and can't denote that they're "Legacy." But then the subraces aren't marked as "Legacy" because the new Multiverse versions of the base race no longer have subraces, so, say...Fallen Aasimar or Longtooth Shifter aren't competing with a newer version with the same name.
You can see the difference somewhat with Genasi. Genasi are a non-PHB race with subraces that don't show a "Legacy" tag on the parent race, but do show a legacy tag on the subraces, because what Multiverse did was separate out each subrace into their own parent, which is the opposite of what it did with Aasimar and Shifter, which was to eliminate the subraces and make them a choice in the base/parent race. So what I'm gleaning from this is that the pattern is that the "Legacy" tag will only appear when there is a "competing" updated race with an identical name, with the exception being older races that used to have subraces, because the "tag" area that would be taken up by "Legacy" is already filled by the number of subraces under that older parent.
It's imperfect, but there is at least some semblance of intention there.
That's interesting, because for me the Legacy Aasimar DO disappear when you hide the Legacy content. The Aasimar subraces also DO feature "Legacy" tags on them, even though the main race still has that (4) notation. The legacy Shifter subraces do not have the "legacy" tag, so I do think you're right that that is the cause, but the lack on consistency seems strange. Shouldn't we have the same experiences? Do you have, or do any of the people in your linked campaigns have, characters that use the legacy Aasimar or Shifter? Perhaps that is what's causing them no not update to the legacy version? I have one campaign member that has the Protector Aasimar character, but neither I nor anyone in my campaigns have a legacy shifter.
Is there any real reason why Mordekaien's Tome of Foes and Volo's Guide to Monsters are no longer purchasable? I understand it's considered legacy content that's no longer in line with current rules and lore, and that almost everything in them has been tweaked and streamlined for a better experience in the new book. However, for someone like me, almost isn't enough. Monsters of the Multiverse fails to include the nine Tiefling subraces based on the hells, for example. And generally, I'm interested in purchasing and using this so-called "Legacy" content within D&D Beyond. What is the reason that this is no longer an option, whether recommended or not?
exactely
If I were to purchase this lackluster book, is there any way to then upgrade it into the previous more complete ones? To be honest, this book is extremely disapointing regarding its content and some of my favorite races got unnecesary nerfs (They werent even that powerful to begin with, but they still got nerfed), so I would like to upgrade it to what is now reffered to legacy content.
Nope.
Seems like a very bad buisness choice, to discontinue a good product and replace it for a lesser one... for all the talk on the interview about wanting to give players and dms as many options as possible, they surely seem to enjoy taking them away :v
Could be, but I expect they know their business better than I do.
I still don't think the new book is a "lesser one."
We can agree to disagree then, and that's okay, but I see a lot less information in this book than I did in the previous ones =/
Only thing I see less of is lore I was never gonna use anyway
