The public beta for digital dice launched yesterday on D&D Beyond, and thousands of fans have already rolled millions of times to see that first "20" land on their screens.
The D&D Beyond team has taken the task seriously of helping people across the world play games and connect with one another during the unprecedented times of this pandemic. Knowing that we can bring even the smallest amount of joy in the midst our global situation provides a real sense of purpose, and we appreciate the reports of happiness brought about by these pixels bouncing across your character sheets more than you know.
Starting today, you will be able to unlock new dice sets for your collection, including the colorful 'Pigment Pack' and a fully-animated 'Mythic Set.' You can check out both in the Marketplace. There will be plenty more where they came from in the days ahead.
We are also acutely aware of recent events that call into stark focus the systemic racial injustice that continues to exist in the world. We understand that messaging from companies often lands hollow without action, and we do not wish to remain silent in the face of this. For the next week (through June 9th), D&D Beyond will donate 50% of all proceeds from digital dice sets to the Black Lives Matter movement.
We stand in solidarity with the Black community against racism, discrimination, and senseless acts of violence.
Dude, (And I'm sure you're a dude) D&D is politics. You go out and fight for a king. You go out and right wrongs. You go out and loot and pillage and justify why it's ok.
Also, beyond games. Get political. If you're not political, you're on the wrong side.
I don't speak for BadEyeAdam or D&D Beyond, but I can see that if you don't want D&D to be political, if you just want to shut up and play, they don't want you using their program.
Get Political or GTFO.
Getting political IRL is good. I just don't want it to bleed into my fantasy world. I play this game to relax. To unwind. To kill imaginary monsters & save imaginary princesses. Things were more simpler back when I started gaming. I just miss those days. Maybe if we could just keep politics out of gaming. Its the one sanctuary I have. Everyday all I hear is politics. On the news, by sports stars, Hollywood, & TV. Just keep it out of gaming.
couldnt have said it better!! :) :)
I agree with you but it is wise to keep an eye on the political situation. I support black lives matter so long as the remain peaceful, & only defend themselves
Look, I get the heart of your position but I think you're painting things with far too broad a brush. Wickwire's position I think is also wrong. You're both telling people what D&D should be, when by its very nature D&D is what those who engage make it to be. You will find plenty of games and groups who don't touch any serious topics, political or otherwise, and then there are groups who get really heavy in their games. Me and my group tend to lean towards the latter, as I personally think stories are only compelling if their subject matter is compelling. But, there are groups who just do whatever with no greater themes playing out. I don't think someone who wants to be purely escapist should be told to take off and not use a service. But if they use this service, they need to know that the owners have the right to pursue their interests.
This is an amazing cause and I'm proud that people are speaking out like this
Thank you, great cause and appreciate D&D Beyond contributing. (...and I'm in for a purchase I wasn't planning to make)
Whole-heartedly agree
Yeah, I wish it was more or all - but I guess I can be thankful that there's anything being done :) There are a lot of companies who don't want to touch this topic with a 10-foot polearm, because they don't want to "take sides" or "alienate" any fraction of their consumers. Good on them, for at least that much.
I'm for one proud of DDB. People can't afford to be silent about what happened.
You can ignore it and be on about your day. Meanwhile, I'll be glad to have such an awesome bunch of developers making a product I love and working in some way for a better world.
Thank you for taking direct action to support justice! <3
I am just saying when DDB supports a side of politics, there is always other sides. D&D is what you make of it, true. But I am taking also about the provider of a service. But when the providers of a service that you pay for, chooses a political side, it always angers the other side. It's best they stay out of politics. They have the right to choose sides, true. But, for example, what if they didn't support BLM but instead decided to support the an organization who were more right leaning. Would people have the same opinion? It's best for them to stay out of it.
Honestly, I was skeptical on the idea of digital dice, but when Alpha was released I loved it, and the idea that you can purchase different sets is awesome. Great cause as well. An off topic suggestion, though: A lot of people have missed or didn't bother to purchase pre orders, therefore missing out on special backgrounds. I personally pre ordered the Theros book, and it made me realize that DNDBEYOND could make a ton of money on offering purchases of background packs or portrait frame packs. I think many would love it, and it'd bring in money, so win-win.
You're talking about this like it's in a vacuum. What's going on is something that affects BIPOC players- just because you can ignore it, doesn't mean everyone can. When DDB supports a cause like BLM, they are making a stand and saying what they do is for everyone, not just white people. So while asking hypothetically if they were to support something more right-wing, the two aren't necessarily the same. Far-right groups are often about exclusion, not inclusion.
You can be proud of DDB for this, or be silent. But arguing about it raises some serious red flags to me. You don't have to support BLM. But don't tell others they shouldn't.
The people in charge here have done what their consciences compel them to do. You must do what your conscience compels you to do, plain and simple. There's a reason I don't eat at Chick-Fil-A or shop at Hobby Lobby.
I am ignoring nothing. I just don't see the point in DDB taking sides on politics. But hey, I said my piece & that's it. God bless & have a great game.
These are AMAZING dice. It hadnt even occurred to me now that the digital dice could be ones that cannot exist in real life until now.
Okay, but why did you feel the need to share that opinion? Why is it so important to you, when what DDB is doing can be so important to others? You are ignoring that fact. But yes. Go game and have fun.
Cheers!
Yo Wickwire, DDB is a company that is supporting an important issue, they can take whatever side they please.
Dude why is everyone attacking Wickwire he is right if a company takes a stand on an issue there are going to people who disagree with what there during with. He's also right I don't think the majority of players want real world events spreading into there games.
