I'm new to making homebrew content and was really concerned that I messed it up really badly until I saw this thread. Changed I make take about an hour to show up, which makes tweaking details and adding new stuff difficult! Looking back I see this has been an issue for a long time! Is it not a priority for the devs because we're creating our own content instead of buying theirs?
Seeing this kind of slow resolution to issues is definitely going to impact my decision to use DND Beyond and whether or not I purchase content here.
I have a similar issued with homebrew feats. The delay in changes appearing in character sheets - or worse, adding/removing an item to the shared homebrew library and not seeing it appear/be removed when I'd set is as such is disheartening. It's very difficult to test the build of a specific homebrew item (be it a feat, magic item, etc.) when the delay before being able to see it in action on a character sheet is such a drain.
I am having this issue still as well, my homebrew stuff is taking a long time to update so it is very difficult to test my modifications to tweak things to be exactly where I want them.
Is this always going to be an issue or is it something that is actively being fixed?
The lag started when they had to separate things onto different servers so they could finally start to rectify everything else that’s an issue. (Like how they were finally able to fix Disciple of Life.)
Same here. It wound up taking so long to update that we just moved to roll20 instead. Not as pretty, but at least we can get it working without days between testing.
I find it's partially a browser caching issue, more than server lag. For example, if I update an item on my laptop, I might not see the change for a while on the same browser. However, if I check the same character sheet on my iPad, it will have cached / caught up with the update.
I find fully removing the updated item from a character - and also leaving it 'out' of your collection for a few minutes lets everything settle down. Then just re-add it to your collection and it should appear afresh. It's not taking hours, but it's certainly not instant.
Just signing up as yet another disappointed user. It's now been 3 days since I updated a subclass feature, and it's still not showing correctly on the character sheet. I've tried saving and resaving everything from every page of the edit view, I've tried remove and readding the class, I've tried creating an entirely new character with my homebrew subclass, it just won't budge. Still stuck on the 3 days old version of the feature.
EDIT: I have since found out that I was updating the feature snippet and description, but not its action's snippet and description. It is a bit annoying that 99% of the time you want the feature snippet/desc to be exactly the same as the action snippet/desc but then you have to keep updating both whenever you want to make a change. It would be so much better if there was a checkbox on the action (on by default) to say "use the same snippet/description as the feature. This is similar to when a website says "use the same shipping address for billing" so you don't have to fill it in twice.
I love DNDB for all the cool stuff it provides, but the Homebrew is very frustrating to use. Admittedly I'm not paying a subscription, but I still find the time needed to see and test an edit on a Homebrew page makes it practically unusable.
I thought there was maybe something I was doing incorrectly, but I see comments going back years with almost no updates or information provided.
Agreed D&D Beyond homebrew is pure garbage and I refuse to pay anything, I just leech of everyone else's content. I have to painstakingly build homebrew things for every PC I make because of missing elements in all aspects of populating a fully functioning sheet. It's a frustrating time sink.
Roll 20 on the other hand takes a few seconds to do anything you want. Booming blade? Click a box! Bless spell? Click a box! Shield of Faith +2 AC Click a box! Custom bonus to all attacks? Click a box! Toll of Dead D12's (make a clickable spell in 5 seconds) then click it! Custom item? 15 seconds then good to go. Even clicking multiple damage types is super time consuming and slow while playing with DnD Beyond, Roll 20 click a few boxes and it all auto rolls it all for you.
Just to note, this is still an issue. It is a problem when you are attempting to understand what does what in Homebrew and if I made a mistake, or if it just isn't showing up. I get a small delay. But I do not understand the enormous delay for changes to show up in my character sheet. I'm trying to work on scaling at higher levels. And could not get it to update it when i changed my level. I am over here thinking I am the one just doing it wrong. So I made an outrageous change just to see if it did anything. It didn't. As I'm trying to figure out what is going on. I removed that enormous change since it didn't show up. basically changed an addition of 1d6 to 10d6. After I removed it and was working on a different part, the enormous change actually appeared even though I had previously removed it. This is a bit ridiculous.
I then came here to figure out what is going on. Glad to see I'm not the only one with this issue. Not glad to see this has been going on for months and nothing has been resolved...
So, just coming here to say that I hate that this is still an issue. It has been a year since I last tried to follow any real home brewing. A major part of this is due to the lag. Since it was acknowledged previously, can we get any sort of update on this issue please?! Thanks!
It can take up to 20 minutes for homebrew changes to percolate to character sheets. They had reasons for this change, probably from setting up separate servers for character sheets and homebrew, and trying to reduce transaction overload, I can't remember precisely.
As a tip, the delay seems to be per character sheet, not homebrew, so making a change to a homebrew and then adding it to a different character than what you'd just been testing with usually has the most recent changes.

I've noticed this is hit or miss. Sometimes a different PC sheet will pull the newer version, sometimes it won't. I wouldn't rely on this.
One of the simplest things to help avoid this caching issue I've found is custom actions use snippets so you should work out any syntax errors in a custom action before trying it in your homebrew. I know some of the snippet codes don't work in custom actions, like I don't believe {{classlevel}} works there. Just replace that code with a number 1 through 20 and work your maths from there till it's right, remembering to replace that arbitrary number with classlevel once you put the snippet in your homebrew.
Yeah that's a good use of custom actions for testing snippets; I use {{characterlevel}} when testing {{classlevel}} snippets since they'd be the same sort of number, and it's effectively the same number if you're single-classed.

there is some major dummy moments above. I too find it frustrating and just want to check is everyone else still having the lag issue? I've made an item (well a few) which wasn't quite right so I changed it, found it wasn't right to changed it again and again and then realised it was because of the lag and the second thing I'd done was correct but I didn't notice....
My tip to everyone in the mean time is make sure you do your version control, so make 1 adjustment, change the version to 1.1 then 1.2 etc. remove it from the characters inventory and then wait for the option in the 'add item' to show the right version number and then test again.
Do not attempt to create something fancy and powerful 1 hour before your session and hope it works, discuss it with your player and if they are a reasonable human-being they will accept it in the short term, it would be awesome if DNDB could fix it though, however, understand that when WotC release a massive pile of content there is a lot of resource reallocation to that.
This is still an issue. "This will not be fixed" should be an acceptable answer from the team. It's still a better answer than, "oh we are working on it..." It's been 1.5 years.

This is still an issue that needs to be rectified.

This is still an issue one year after initially being acknowledged. Can we get confirmation that it's at least still on a radar somewhere?
Still an issue for me. For my last homebrew it was taking almost 2 hours to update the changes while testing. I gave up, in the end.

Hey Devs, here is my little story :
Was convinced to test DnD Beyond.
Started by doing some homebrews.
Met the lag issue.
Lost more than 5 hours trying to understand what's happening.
Found this post.
Conclusion : DnD Beyond is garbage.
Bye.

I mean, come on guys... It can't be that hard to solve... :/ At least some useful feedback for your paying customers would be nice.
