the character builder (using the "free mode") seems to be very light compared to options in the players handbook (for example, for a cleric there is only one Divine Domain available), do i need to buy the digital PHB from dnd beyond to make the character builder fully stocked?

Yup.

Staff may be able to get a few more things approved for free digital distribution, especially after such a great launch. Stay tuned for that!
Hey Subsistcyber! I love hearing that it was a "great launch" is there any chance we may be getting some more details about how great the launch was? I would love to know how many subscribers there are now or how many people bought the legendary pack day one. Not sure if that is information that will ever be shared, but if not details maybe something about how it compared to expectations? Like we were expecting 1000 subscribers and exceeded that, or something like that. Thank you again for all you guys do!

The most memorable stories always begin with failure.
The Features, Description and Notes should be placed below Limited Use, Equipment and Spells on the character screen. Also, I don't see where the Maneuvers I selected for my fighter are listed.
I think it's more important to see spells/additional action info versus how tall a character is.
in that case, they should clarify that the "free version" is a half-baked piece of junk. I am totally fine paying for the real thing, but call a spade a spade.
in fact, just to clarify, i am perfectly willing to buy the "pay version" but am certainly hoping that it is infinitely better than the joke that is available for free. if not, the joke is on me. they should advertise it as "only 6 characters AND limited data available".

It's been advertised that way from the beginning. The fact that the free version will only contain the free SRD content has literally been said one million times prior and is in about 100 different FAQs on this site.
They are pretty clear if you just read the suggested info. When you go to purchase details it tells you exactly what you get.
It is not advisable marketing to call anything a half-baked piece of junk, especially since there are many players that can enjoy the game with the free information. It is like a free red box :).
The warlock invocations, particularly Book of Ancient Secrets, is giving me fits. I can't add extra ritual spells. They need to be able to grab any ritual from any class list.

i am looking here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/subscribe i admit that i am new to this site and have not hunted around for info, but if the data is not going to include the basic PHB data (the de facto bible of D&D), then it should be spelled out in the page where you subscribe. my humble opinion. the reason i am annoyed is that i don't want to subrscibe, pay for the digital handbook, and then find out the PC builder is still deficient.

If you purchase the PHB (whether you subscribe or not), all options in it will become available to you in the character builder.
When you purchase the PHB in the marketplace, you gain access to the compendium content, the spell listings, the monster listings, and the character builder content. You can also choose to buy these things as bundles or individually.

awesome, thanks Dross & Sillvva. also, just for the record, i am rooting for dnd beyond to be successful and create/maintain a great PC builder. it is vital to the game.
Anyone else find that the "randomized" character generator doesn't prioritize the primary or secondary ability scores of the class? For example, Fighters are generated with Intelligence as the highest score, not Strength, etc.

In some circumstances, non-spellcasters can cast spells , and it would be able to list those spells on the spell sheet for easy access. E.g. Way of the Shadow Monk has the Shadow Arts class feature, which includes several spells. As far as I can tell, there is no "override" to allow a character to have spells if they are not a spellcaster. Just a thought.

Randomize definitely randomizes. We intend to build out the "Quick Build" method of character creation to create more optimized versions of each class from levels 1 to 20.
That way, a new player can come directly into the builder, choose a class and level, and be ready to go with something that will work well.
This will of course be useful for NPCs too.
My hope is to get that added fairly soon - we'll keep you updated!

How do you get a one-armed goblin out of a tree?
