So I have a list of pop culture characters and icons that I give to new players when I introduce them to DnD. I'm having a bit of a mental black at the moment for a list for the Artificer though. In my list of characters, I usually try to include a character from TV shows, one from movies, one from comics/super heroes, one from Disney, one from history, legend or folklore, one from novels and one from contemporary reality (and my emphasis is on TRY haha).
Other than Iron Man and Kvothe (who is arguably more a bard anyway), I'm struggling to come up with a list in my writer's block Sunday. Batman is already on the list and I was thinking Leonardo Da Vinci, but that may be a bit obscure (although I do have Tony Robbins on the Bard list, purely on the inspiration aspect haha). Who would you suggest?
Hjalmar Gunderson, Vuman Alchemist Plague Doctor in a HB Campaign, Post Netherese Invasion Cormyr (lvl20 retired) Godfrey, Autognome Butler in Ghosts of Saltmarsh into Spelljammer Grímr Skeggisson, Goliath Rune Knight in Rime of the Frostmaiden DM of two HB campaigns set in the same world.
Oh wowee! Awesome list! You're definitely not suffering writers block! There's so many "ah damn, of course!" moments in this list!!! Cannot forgive myself for not thinking of MacGuyver!!! Q, Gru, Rick Sanchez and Nikola Tesla are also facepalming moments for me! I was thinking Jekyll/Hyde as an alchemist too but again, thought it might be a stretch, however you suggesting it has benched that thought. Thanks man!

Happy to help. One of the things I like for Artificer villains/characters is the "I created something that changed me permanently."
Some examples are Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll is an alchemist that created a potion that changed his mind, giving him an evil alter-ego.
Bruce Banner is either an Alchemist or Artillerist (depending on what comic you're going off of), and he changed his DNA so he'd rage whenever he gets mad, transforming into a giant green monster. (If you want to go all in to being Hulk, I'd be an alchemist, multiclass with Beast Barbarian, and Rune Knight fighter. This way, you can turn large, rage, and cast disguise self to turn yourself green before you rage.)
If I was going to make a villain like this, I'd have them be either human, elf, vedalken, or gnome. Then, I'd choose which subclass they're going to be. For human, I'd do alchemist or artillerist so you can be a poison/potion maker or make flame throwers, cannons, and other high-tech weapons. If I was doing elf, I'd be alchemist. If I was doing Vedalken, I'd do artillerist (fits the Izzet theme) or Battle Smith (for the robot making). If I was doing gnome, I'd do battle smith or alchemist, so you make an army of robots, or potions that make you evil.

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
Flamethrower, rifle, pistols, jetpack made from "Infusions", etc...
Warhammer Ultra Marine - Armorer / Battlesmith
Shoot a Repeating Bolter, or get up close and personal with a greataxe and "Arcane Jolt".
Megaman - Armorer / Artillerist
Depending on your preference, Artillerist for a wide-assortment of blasting spells, cantrips, and your Eldritch Cannon...or Armorer for a decent selection of blasting spells, lasers, and some melee capability for slugging up-close.
You mention Claudia and Artie but leave out HG Wells?? Disappointed lol
Toyman, The Tinkerer, Norman Osbourne, Dr Josef Reinstein (AKA Abraham Erskine (the dude who created the super soldier serum), Bruce Banner/Hulk and Dr Jekyl/Mr Hyde are pretty much the same one half Alchemist one half Barbarian. Leonardo Da Vinci and his brother from another mother Donatello (the turtle)
The genius that came up with coffee and vanilla danishes.
And a whole lot of people who are either dead or alive after saying the immortal phrase "I wonder what will happen if I........."

DOCTOR WHO!
Any alchemist ever? Nicolas Flamel is the main one I can think of.
Archimedes!
Q, from James Bond!
Chuck Bartowski from Chuck.
Data from Star Trek
Luke from Star Wars
MacGuyver.
Phineas and Ferb
Megamind
Gru from Despicable Me
Mr. Freeze.
If you've read any Greek Mythology, Hephaestus is totally an artificer.
Yes, Iron Man. I could also see Spider-Man as an artificer/rogue/monk multiclass.
Bruce Banner is basically an artificer, Hulk is barbarian.
Einstein would be more of a scientist than an engineer, but I think he'd fit in as an artificer.
Thomas Edison! The Wright Brothers! Nikola Tesla!
Benjamin Franklin! Galileo! Bill Gates! Stephen Hawking!
Dr. Doofenshmirtz? Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty. Any evil mad scientist inventor ever, real or fake.
DR. DOOM! Plankton from Sponge-Bob. Dr. Frankenstein. Dr. Jekyll.
Any of these help?

It might be a bit obscure, but Iz from Bofuri is basically an artificer.
The scientist/ inventor from Mystery Men (tornado in a can, blame thrower)
Batman, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Iron Monger.
Cisco (from The Flash tv show), Harry Wells too.
Claudia and Artie from Warehouse 13
The Men of Letters from Supernatural
Elon Musk
Darrington from Critical Role Campaign 1
Percy from Critical Role Campaign 1
Doc Brown from Back to the Future

How bout Milo from Atlantis?
Rick Moranis from Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
Egon from Ghostbusters
Forge from XMen (he is right on the nose for the 5e version since he basically creates anything he wants)
The Mandalorian - Artillerist Artificer
Flamethrower, rifle, pistols, jetpack made from "Infusions", etc...
Warhammer Ultra Marine - Armorer / Battlesmith
Shoot a Repeating Bolter, or get up close and personal with a greataxe and "Arcane Jolt".

Harry Dresden of the Dresden Files.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Vulture, Baxter Stockman (TMNT), Dr. Doom (As Levi mentioned) was the artificer before artificers existed.
You could do Dethlok, Cyborg, Terminator, or Robocop as Warforged artillerists.
They don't always ahve to be GOOD at what they do.
Tim Taylor (Home Improvement) would be an artificer played for comedy
If any D&D class is going to be the tool man it's the Artificer.
"Al is my homunculus, he assists me."
I think you got that backwards. Lol

clearly an artillerist who found his calling when he just tried to give a simple cantrip/device a little more power
Most Marvel villains and a lot of superheroes are also considered artificers.

Mei Hatsumei and all her BABIES! from My Hero Academia is definitely an artificer, god did I love her in the School festival arc.
She convinces her opponent to wear a device she created to give his super speed a better turning radius... and it works.
The thing is, it's not a trick. It really does improve his maneuverability. She just has more gadgets he wasn't expecting.
The Ghostbusters,
MaGyver,
Forge, Cable, possibility even Xavier (he did make Cerebro and the Danger Room) from the X-Men, Reed Richards from the FF,
Goon from Titan A.E.,
5 from Dark Matter,
Bulma from DBZ,
Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, the entire cast from Mythbusters, from IRL,
almost the entire cast of characters from Eureka,
the entire Adeptus Mechanicus from WH40k as well as several others characters including Fabius Bile, heck, even the Emperor himself,
Anakin Skywalker from Star Wars,
half of every character from every JRPG (like Final Fantasy) ever,
Data from The Goonies,
Urza from M:tG,
the dad in ”Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,”
Destro and Dr. Mindbender from G.I.Joe
(And Kvothe is most definitely a bard IMHO, or at least multiclassed.)
