Before now, I know that D&D Beyond wouldn't let users take advantage of hardcopies for two reasons:
They want $$$
There is no existing way to verify a hardcopy
Now (1) has been handled since WotC owns D&D Beyond, and as such, any hardcopies we've purchased have now filled their coffers. However, there's still the nagging issue of (2). So, I have devised a way to allow players to uniquely identify books:
Come up with a registration statement, e.g. "D&D BEYOND REGISTER: <NAME>" and have players write that in ink on the copyright page. Have players submit a hi-res photo of the open-faced book with that statement written on the copyright page page as part of a request to register the book. For example, I'd write "D&D BEYOND REGISTER: CairnJoset" in ink and submit photos.
This would let books be marked in such a way as to prevent people re-registering the same book multiple times. It would be a big help to folks who already spent a great deal of money on 5e and don't want to double down on their spending.
This has been brought up MANY times. The official position of D&D Beyond is that they are aware of this desire and they will let users know if there are any developments.
Unfortunately, there is no possibility of backwards granting access to content on D&D Beyond, for free, based on physical books you already own.
On top of other reasons, there is no way to legitimately discern who has purchased a physical book (barcodes/receipts etc are not viable).
With regards future book purchases, we are exploring options. We're not able to share what that might look like as, at this point, it's still exploratory.
Whilst probably not the answer that you wanted to read, I hope this provides the answer requested.
