My players are asking about a magic item, 'Cat's Eye Emerald Necklace' that they would like to quest for/have made. I am unable to search the item no matter how many ways I look for it. What possible reason could it be that he can find an item that I cannot? I asked him to add it to his digital character sheet so that maybe that would help, but no luck. l can click on it in his character sheet, but cannot search it at all.
I did a search for 'Very Rare' and 'Requires attunement' on the filters and it doesn't come up, but he can add it to his sheet.
It doesn't appear in an official search or the published homebrew. If I had to guess this is a private homebrew item that either or someone else in the campaign made.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Lightning Strike - A rebranded Fire Bolt for Wizards & Sorcerers.
Spirit Bomb - A holy fireball for Clerics, Paladins, & Divine Soul Sorcerers!
Sword Dancer - A Cleric subclass specifically for the Drow goddess Eilistraee.
Go to their character sheet in the campaign and search for it under “manage equipment.” It might be a homebrew that someone has in their collection automatically getting shared. Or they might have found it on the Wiki homebrew. If that’s where they found it, it is probably broken AF.
It is pretty damn strong, an extra reaction per turn on a polearm master eldritch knight/bard with like a dozen reaction options (hes the one who found it)... Just want to be able to access it. I will look in the homebrew stacks.
1-I have asked and they said they searched it (my search has come up nadda).
2-He was able to put it in his digital character sheet. I can go to his dndbeyond character sheet and open up the item like anything else, but when I try to search it....nothing.
It is a Cat's Eye Emerald Necklace. If you can find it, please let me know how and maybe we can figure out wtf is going on.
I searched homebrew but got nothing, however reading the item again, after the weight and cost lines is a third line, Version 1. Now I have to figure out where he found it.
If it has a Version field (even without a version number) then it is guaranteed 100% homebrew. Official content never has a “version” field.
If your player can load it onto their character sheet then it is most likely homebrew. If it is private homebrew (unpublished) then it will not appear in any search. But if any player in that campaign has the homebrew in their collection, then it will be available for every player in every campaign they are in to potentially find it.
Thank you, I tried searching from multiple characters in my campaign and it comes up. So if it is unpublished and therefore unsearchable, how would someone find it?
They were probably searching in the character sheet and found it there, just like you did. All homebrew in every collection of every person in the campaign is automatically shared to every else in that campaign.
Either you, or one of the players in that campaign wrote it, and has it in their “collection.” If they remove it from their collection it will stay in their “creations,” but it will no longer be shared with everyone else. You can do the same thing to hide your stuff from your players so they cannot get spoilers.
So one of these sneaky buggers created it (likely the guy who wants it), and then tried to pawn it off as a 'look what I found'....can I have one? Looks like the creation quest just got a lot harder..
Not necessarily. I mean maybe, but it could be something one of them made so long ago they forgot about it, and one of the others found it by “searching” on the character sheet the same way you were able to find it.
Or they may have found it by searching like they said, but on the wiki in stead of DDB, and then made a version that works for the DDB character sheets.
I mean, there are other plausible explanations besides intentional deception. 🤷♂️ Just trying to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Nope, not in homebrew either.
Why don’t you just ask them where they found it?

But apparently not the DM... I am unable to find it.
You will only be able to find it by trying to add it to a character within that campaign.
I guarantee you, if you ask your players about it either one of them will admit to having it in their collection, or they will be fibbing.
