Just wanted to make a bard aprreciation center honestly as it's my favourite class, tell me your favourite bard that you played or someone else has. Mine is my current half elf bard who also just went mystic order of the avatar to get the most support bard I can. Don you play to be witty? Or just because of the amazing utility?
I really like playing the charismatic kind of character, but also being able to support my party with heals. The temp hitpoints in the College of Glamour are also of big benefit for them. I always loved the idea of a bard, so when we started a new campaign I was right on the boat to be one, considering I normally dislike support classes and love killing things.
My current bard is my first and is about to multiclass as a warlock. He's an elven weretiger, so refuses to be the stereotypical bard that sleeps with everything as he doesn't want to pass on the sickness.
My current bard is pretty typical in the sense that he's a happy-go-lucky chap that tries to seduce all the pretty lasses (and one time a vampire... I digress). But while he's true to the stereotype of his class, he's the antithesis of his racial stereotype, as he is also Drow. I mostly focus on Illusion and Enchantment spells with him (College of Lore), but he's about to multiclass into Swashbuckler Rogue for a few levels. I've picked up booming blade to give him some personal offensive ability in case he gets isolated and plan to use hit and run tactics on lone enemies while maintaining battlefield control. All in all, a very fun character to play!
Oh... and I play him with an Aussie accent. Because, you know... down under(dark)! :P
The half elf bard I'm playing isn't really much of the typical bard, he's a scholar obsessed with history and wanting to use it to better himself since most people see him as just another "stuck up noble" he's also accidentally planeswalker to the game he's currently in which is how were saying he unlocked his mystic powers. I kinda play him as a knight as well, using a long sword and now able to use medium armor and shields die to order of the avatar. He's kind but easily angered, and may accidentally get the party killed due to his obsession with learning history XD or just showing a racist queen his pedigree of eleven royalty xp
I've always avoided spell casters and when I played a ranger (my comfort zone and first love) I never bothered with the spell casting. It was intimidating to me and I found I could live without it. Another player in my new group wanted to play ranger though and with the interest of party diversity in mind, I decided the time had come to push my boundaries and force myself to roleplay something different.
Enter my Tiefling bard, raised from infancy by the tribal elves that pulled him from the burning wreckage of an otherwise decimated slaver's convoy. Though not especially gregarious in bard terms, he was still a mostly joyful child with a knack for creating and telling stories. Wanderlust and curiosity eventually seized his spirit, so he set out for adventure. His career got off to a fatal start however, as he was killed early on by an evil spirit while his first true party had inadvertently entered a sub-plane of their existence.
Seeing their tribe's adopted son passing between worlds, the spirits of fallen warriors and leaders snatched him from the clutches of death and returned him to the realm of the living. He was now changed though. He had become part warlock with a duty to complete tasks that would bring honor to the tribe.
Bards are my favorite class! I enjoyed them in 3.5 quite a bit and have been itching to try a 5e Bard. I mostly DM and the one 5e game I haven't, we had a newbie that really wanted to play Bard and I didn't want to double up (played Cleric instead and it was awesome).
My favorite bard was from a 3.5 campaign we never finished. Low-magic setting where the talent and magic items were very rare. My bard was the youngest of four brothers, and all his brothers were smiths like their father. But Karst was entranced by the old songs of magic and doom and lore. Well of course he fell into adventure with the rest of the party from his home town (based off the Sunless Citadel adventures, twisted into our DM's own setting). He eventually made it to a bard college and started learning their secrets, getting access to Bardic Knowledge and improving my knowledge skills. Also he got a cloak showing his station and became a great diplomat for the party. It made him a great party face and I loved it.
The thing that made it super fun to role-play was that I would actually keep a song book and write song titles after each adventure or event. I also came up with magic words and gestures for my spells (my favorite being "Parson-Afronte" for Magic Missile which our group still quotes). It was fun to bring the pining adolescent into achieving his dream of becoming a bard while his friends grew up around him as well. Damn, I miss that game haha.
The first time I ever played a tabletop (Pathfinder) I was going to play Rogue. But someone beat me to it. As at the time I was playing a Bard in Final Fantasy 14 I thought sod it I will go with Bard. I have never regretted that choice. Bard is and always be my favourite class.
There are a few things I like about bard. First them being good jack of all trades, their versatility keeps them interesting. Next I do like to play the healer which bards can do fairly well. Next I love how unique and interesting. With things like Vicious Mockery which has some great in fight uses and some awesome RP potential it makes fights a good rp experience as well as other stuff.
The last reason I love bards is because of a curse I have. I roll awfully constantly. No one else in my group has come close to my record of 11 natural 1s in a session. But bards work well for me. As their large skill abilities mean I can still get a okay score when I roll badly. Then add in quiet a lot of their spells are Saves on the enemies end means I don't even have to roll to be helpful.
But what I love most is the great story of the first bard I ever played is still going. Jester the human bard who invented Jazz is still going in a way. He was given a gift by the pathfinder god of booze Cayden Cailean for helping him. He was given the gift of reincarnation but not the normal way. On death his memories are transferred to a different version of himself in a different world. So his adventure may never end. Yes each version of him has a different personality and often race. Plus he may not always be a bard. But that baseline trait of loving some fun and a good joke will always retain. Be he a PC or on occasion a NPC Jester will be there somewhere.
I'm playing my first bard; and it was cause one of my friends said that I may like the bard class. Plus I can't roll to hit, so all the DC save spells help me fight. I actually made up a Rocket Man parody called Magic-Missile Man.
"And I think it's going to be a long long time, Before I cast that spell again, I'm not the wizard you thought at all, No no I'm a magic-missile man Magic-Missile Man, Burning up my slots out here alone!"
Bards are the most versatile class in the game in my opinions, when geared and KIT right we can pretty much do anything and fill any holes in the party (with the right CHA I do mean ANY holes ;) )
Adult jokes aside, Bards are set up to take any spell or gear they need to fit into their role in the party. They are also Full Casters now making their spellcasting on par with any other caster in the game, We get amazing control in the form of a lot of our spells (dissonant whispers I'm looking at you)
I've played several bards before...they are so versatile they never get old! We are about to start SKT and I'm playing a Bard that can best be described as "if Tyrion Lannister was a Disney Princess". Bards and barbarians, it's all you need!
The first time my friends and i ever played d&d i was a half elf bard. our rouge was trying to seduce drunks in the bar in Phandelin. after failing the charisma check, she was heading out when my bard offered to charm the drunk for half the stolen goods that she took off him. When the charm failed, my bard panicked and broke his mandolin over the guys head and got stabbed. The rouge stepped out as the bard fight got out of hand and I had to spend two days of adventure without my main instrument.
I am currently playing a Half Dryad bard who is chaotic evil. his ultimate goal is to kill all the humans because they hunt for sport and dont use everything that they comes from the beast they kill. currently he has burnt 3 towns to the ground and 1 orphanage. im loving it because he can talk himself out of anything. and the party hates him. (no humans they just hold compassion for humans where my bard lacks any.) im roleplaying him as unable to speak common. and only sylvan and draconic. my question is, was bard a good choice for this?

I just like the style of Bards (no not the part of sleeping with every wench you meet).
In the next campaign i want to play a Gnome Bard, who has a joke or a song for every situation. So he seems to bee always in a good mood :D
They are kind of awesome. Great utility, great fun, sick beats.

Best class for comedic characters and also Leomund's Tiny Hut.

The expression on your group's faces when you run into combat then hide in leomund's hut for 8 hours is priceless
Nobody the cleric RIP, lasted 2 sessions
Akmenos the warlock RIP, killed by tidal wave
Adrian the bard, cleaning the sewers for the water cult
vivizyx the warlock/rogue serving the fire cult
scarelion shadowsbane the paladin, not dead yet
"Ooh, a Ring Of Protection! Thanks Dave."

I like the idea that in the D&D universe there is power in the music and the bard is the class showing this power.
at 8 hp:
Me: I go through the tunnel
DM: OK you see a door on the left
Me: I go in (audible moan from party)
D.M: You see a guard
Guard: Who do you serve
Me: Myself
gets stabbed by guard
I then found myself floating in a lake with a dragon turtle

I feel like I recognize that character. Maybe I'm crazy. Anyway, I like how funny bards can be, and whatnot.
