I have been looking at something and I need clarity.
If I choose the tortle race and not use armor, I get 17 Ac from one of their bonuses.
Now I want to play it as a monk, I understand I can't use a shield. But I would assume I still get the unarmered bonus from that tree as well (dex + wis). It's not like I have to remove my shell to become a monk.
Please let me know if this line of thinking is correct.
No, the general rule for the AC says that you can apply only one AC calculation at a time. Natural armour and unarmored defence are two different AC calculation so, you must choose one.
My problem is that the way it's written in the manual is that it's the base AC. A tortle would have a base AC of 17 while other races have a base ac of 10.
With the class ability if you treat base ac for both the same it would 10+dex+wis for others and 17+dex+wis for tortle. The wording base does seem to change things.
This has been rather completely officially explained previously. You get to use either Natural armour or unarmored defence, you cannot combine the two. It's either 17+ dex or 10+dex+wis. The tortle natural armor is classed as an AC calculation, just like unarmored defence is. I know that doesn't make sense logically, and I don't like it either, but that is the ruling.
An AC calculation is just anything which sets your AC to a specific value before any relevant bonuses (like a shield or the Shield or Shield of Faith spells)
Whether a number is set to 17(+0) or 13+DEX, either is classified as an AC calculation. One just doesn't list any other modifiers to it as part of the calculation.

So what you're telling me is that you want to be Master Oogway from Kung Fu Panda?
It's not going to be 17 + dex
