I have got some crazy high rolls. I know these are super high but here is how my DM has us roll for stats:
Roll 4d6
Re-roll 1s
Drop the lowest number
take the sum of the highest three numbers
We do that 6 times, and we can put our numbers anywhere we want. Also, our DM tells us what kind of game she will be running, we all roll in front of each other and our DM, we then go away and make our characters at home. I have ended up with some crazy high rolls for all my stats, and it's thrown me through a loop, and now I don't know what to do with them.
Here is what I got. 14, 18, 15, 16, 16, 16.
I want to make a Rogue, but I have got such high rolls that I don't know what to do with them. I usually would optimise a character around my best numbers, but I am not going ever be so lucky again, so just for once, I want to make the most awesome Rogue that I possibly can, like literally the Rogue of all Rogues, who dices with Devils and wears shadows like you or I would wear a coat. What race should use? What weapons, what kind of Rogue should I make? I am so excited about getting such excellent stats that I can't think straight - and yeah I know that's stupid and childish.

I'd go standard human so you can get all your important stats to 20 and still take a feat.
Omg can you imagine if this was for a campaign lol I'd literally have 20 in just about everything lol.
It's for another one-shot though so we play at level 5 characters it I can totally make that 18 a 20, or maybe I should take a feat instead. I dunno I've never had stats like this before without playing through a whole campaign.

What type of session is lt going to be? Will you need a lot of skills? Will you be sneaking? Will playing a fast talking con artist be best? Or, scouting, spying, or combat?
For your race, be a Halfling to max out your Dexterity at 20 and take the Lucky feat. Halfling Luck plus Lucky with a 20 Dexterity will make an awesome rogue as long as you don’t need Darkvision!
Now that I have calmed down, I can actually think. The game is going to be a dark detective story. Our DM described it as a Sin City style detectove noir, set in the forgotten realms and sprinkled with a touch of Lovecraft.
It's a complete 180 from her usual high fantasy style. For this one, she is delving into dark gritty realism. She is taking inspiration from H P Lovecraft for the story and transplanting a Sin City style setting into the forgotten realms, in which she plans to tell the story of a group of detectives (us) assigned to work the recently reopened cold case of an apparent teenage suicide.
The story is very adult and will take place in a city where greed and vice are kings. A place where the weak and helpless are used and abused and exploited by the rich and the powerful - everyone knows and noone really cares.
She also warned us that she was planning on including the use of drugs and other substances, as well as murder, torture and sexual abuse of the young and old alike. Though she won't be putting us in the position of 'witnessing' it directly, she did warn us that some of her NPCs have horrific stories that might well come out as we try to solve the case.
She's even including an X card, something she has never had to do before. So that tells you what kind of story she will be telling with this game.
We can be any of the official d&d playable races, but the city she is setting her game is mostly populated by humans and she warned us that if we play any race other than human then we might come us against prejudices. She is not discouraging us from being any particular race, she was just warning us ahead of time, so we don't feel like she is picking on us or anything if it happens.
So I was thinking of being a Rogue, who makes the shadows his home. He knows what goes on in the city and isn't above having his fun, though he takes his work very seriously and won't compromise when it comes to the investigation of a case and what's more, he is personally motivated to solve this one, because the girl who supposedly commited suicide was the daughter of his dead partner.
My character is going to be an older detective, he has been around for a while and this is his last case before retirement. He wants to solve this case, and do this last thing for his old friend.
He's the kind of guy who wants to do good. He tries, he really tries but all too often, the ends justify means and the line between right and wrong, good and evil always ends up blurred.

You just described the Inquisitive archetype to me. I’d be a variant human with the Observant feat.
Dex of 19 and Int of 18 at 1st level with the feat. Then at 4th level Dex of 20 and bump whatever ability you have 15 in up to 16. You’ll be excellent at investigation!
I totally agree with the Inquisitive pick. This sounds like the perfect time to take that Subclass! Any race works really. Human with Dex or Wisdom maxed would be awesome. Lots of good feats for this too. As the above poster mentioned observant would be good. Also, keen mind perhaps? Honestly this sounds like a super fun idea!
I would say Inquisitive for sure, but I would go Changeling, you can easily pass for human, just be sure to get some Glamoured Studded Leather to change you clothes as easily as you change yourself.

You have the Int to make brilliant plans, the Wis to notice anything and read anyone, and the Cha to get a Bedouin tribe to move to Antartica. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MagnificentBastard
I'd go standard human so you can get all your important stats to 20 and still take a feat.

I am a big fan of the tabaxi swashbuckler. (LGT sheet, swap the 15 from int or wis to cha if you want).

You could be a skill monkey, half-elf scout/lore bard, get 6 expertise by level 5, and 12 proficiencies by level 6 (I think I remembered those right).
