Spells: Armor of Agathys, Hellish Rebuke, Hex, Invisibility, Counterspell, Darkness, Dispel Magic, Shadow of Moil
Invocations
lv 2 - Agonizing Blast, Devil's Sight
lv 5 - Voice of the Chainmaster
lv 7 - Maddening Hex
Patron: Baba Yaga (Babushka, the Grandmother Hag)
Born to impoverished human parents in the Trades Ward section of Waterdeep, Eshom was an Aasimar that rejected his divine heritage at an early age. After the death of his elderly parents, Eshom became a talented tailor and powerful guildsman with an impeccable taste for high fashion.
The eccentric tailor was murdered by a powerful mage after fashioning a magnificent garment (for a very large sum, of course) from otherworldly fabrics. Ultimately, Eshom’s avarice led to his downfall.
Eshom spent the next 180 years as a restless spirit in the dismal reflection of Waterdeep (in the Shadowfell) until his resurrection by Baba Yaga.
That is a really nice theme and you have some good invocations and spells there too. What do you have planned for future levels? I really like the Baba Yaga Patron and tie to it.
As soon as I decided to make a Warlock I knew I wanted Baba Yaga as my patron. I chose Hexblade rather than Archfey because the patron features fit better with the dark and hexing nature of the Crone. I think I got the idea of the Hag as a cool Hexblade Patron from a Mike Mearls tweet... I haven't got everything planned just yet but here are my thoughts so far:
4th level spells: Summon Greater Demon (yes!) and Charm Monster
5th: Cone of Cold and Banishing Smite
6th Mass Suggestion
7th Crown of Stars
8th Dominate Monster?
9th Foresight? or True Polymorph?
As for invocations l'll probably add: Chains of Carceri, Cloak of Flies, Repelling Blast and Master of Myriad Forms. Feats: 4th Lucky. 8th +2 CHA. 12th Resilient: CON. 16th: ? and 19th: ?
Hopefully, I can play this character long enough to see this play out!
So far this is my first warlock, but I am having a blast with him and I concur that warlock is definitely my favorite 5E class.
Name: Reynwyn
Archetype: Raven Queen
Pact: Pact of the Tome (Guidance, Minor Illusion, Spare the Dying)
Race: Half-elf
Alignment: Neutral
Gender: Male
Background: Inheritor
Cantrips: Eldritch Blast, Prestidigation
Spells: Hex, Invisibility, Sanctuary, Suggestion
Invocations
lv 2 - Book of Ancient Secrets, Armor of Shadows
Patron: The Raven Queen
Our campaign is set in Forgotten Realms, shortly after the Times of Trouble, and therefore the Raven Queen normally is not part of the deity portfolio; however, the GM and I have worked out a story where the Raven Queen was once an active part of the pantheon in the Realms, but after a clash with Shar and Myrkul was banished and they attempted to erase all knowledge of her from the world. We worked into the setting that the Black Raven Uthgardt tribe would have some ties to her as well as the Raven Rock in the northern Sword Coast.
Reynwyn inherited his uncle Jareth's journal and ring after the man apparently died after disappearing from Candlekeep suddenly some years earlier. It seemed that uncle Jareth had located some cryptic information regarding the Raven Queen buried deep in the Candlekeep vaults and began to investigate into this apparent lost deity and eventually devoted himself entirely to the Raven Queen. Reynwyn began researching into the encrypted journal and began seeing signs of the Raven Queen as well over a period of time and began to devote himself to her as well. As his devotion solidifies, his powers become more potent and she teaches him new techniques through dreams while his uncle's journal transformed into a shadowy tome with contained ancient secrets of the Raven Queen. Also, as it turns out Reynwyn's Sentinel Raven appears to possibly be his Uncle Jareth.
My group is very combat heavy and light on healing/magical support which is why I'm focusing primarily on support magic and spells. Also, I really wanted to play up the shadow-theme of the Raven Queen with the selections I've been making. I am having a blast with Reynwyn, more so than I have had with a character in a very long time!
I always loved to UA Raven Queen Archetype. I wish they had added it with Xanathar's. Oh well, I can still use the Hexblade to substitute it somewhat. I really love any character based on the Raven Queen. The only way to make it more thematic would be to make it a Shadar-Kai from Mordenkeinan's Tome of Foes.
Oh absolutely, initially that was one of my 2nd level Invocations, but I swapped it for the Book of Ancient Secrets to gain access to all those rituals. The extra 3 damage was not as impressive with Polearm Master Barbarian, longbow archer, and warforged fighter in the mix... Oh and a Bard of Valor.
I agree that I wish Raven Queen would have made it into Xanathar's or even Mordenkainen's.
Born into a herd of Goliaths (originally chose Goliath as a race but migrated to changling with the new Eberron content as it fit my character archetype/playstyle) and was outcast for being the runt of the litter (and born with blue skin), abandoned by the herd whilst I was out on an extended hunt (seen as a rite of passage into adulthood).
Felt at home in nature and have been helped to survive my intial solitary existance by an unknown powerful benefactor that is tied to nature (All my DM has told me)
Originally believed that I was a Goliath (started by using Mask of Many faces to hide my true form) until I was shown that I was a cuckoo in the nest and actually had the ability to change my form physically rather than by using illusion.
Became a defender of the chaotic element of nature however enjoy playing tricks on others that come across my path (think of a mischievous imp/pixie style attitude)
A Hexblade/Druid that's unique! I'm guessing the Archfey didn't interest you? That Patron seems to fit with "unknown powerful benefactor that is tied to nature" and " mischievous imp/pixie style attitude". Although, you'd loose some of the benefits of Pact of the Blade, which is too bad. Either way I like the flavor of your multiclassing...the story fits the build.
Thanks, I am very much a fan of building a character through story rather than stats.
I did look at the Archfey, but from a story perspective the Hexblade fit better (coming from a herd of Goliaths) and I wanted to be more of a melee caster than a full spell caster.
Was fascinated by the concept of a Patron that could, at the will of the DM, mess with the party.
So I came up with an idea for an Archfey Warlock...a performer got a little drunker than usual following his troupe's show, and ended up stumbling too far from where the tents were set up. In his daze and stupor, he got lost in the woods and accidentally fell into a Hidden Grove somewhere in the Feywild, where he met an Archfey...a beautiful creature with midnight hair and captivating eyes of pink hues.
The Archfey, who had been tasked with protecting this grove, would have destroyed this foolish mortal intruder...but after some bumbling and mildly entertaining banter, the Archfey found him too amusing to kill immediately. Instead, the Archfey revealed that she had been bound to the Hidden Grove by a rival from the Gloaming Court in a vicious power-grab, and as such, was forbidden to leave. The Archfey had grown incredibly bored by her isolation, and desperately wished to escape her prison and see what had changed outside of it. This foolish mortal had been the first interesting thing to happen in a century.
She struck a Pact with the mortal...she would allow him to leave the Hidden Grove, offering him a small share of her power to do with as he pleased. In exchange, she would be allowed to see the outside world through his eyes, in order to satisfy her boredom of imprisonment. The mortal hastily agreed, eager to return to his troupe after his strange encounter with this frightening, yet alluring, Archfey. She also gave him her pseudodragon, her only companion within the Hidden Grove, as a sign of good faith.
The mortal fled the Hidden Grove, exiting the Feywild and finding his way back to his troupe. Tired and exhausted, he fell into a deep sleep within the safety of his tent. That morning, after he awoke, he found the pseudodragon gone. The mortal dismissed this whole encounter with the Archfey as an inebriated dream, and went about his troupe's daily duties.
That night, he decided not to drink or celebrate, instead going right to sleep. But in his dreams, he found himself back within the foggy pool of the Hidden Grove, with the Archfey nowhere to be seen. He called out for help, but only the delightful laughter of the Archfey echoed back.
The mortal awoke back in his tent after this dream, finding his tent in shambles and the pseudodragon sitting over him with concern. His chest, neck, and arms had bite & scratch marks all over them. Opened casks and bottles of wine were strewn about the tent, as well as various articles of clothing that were...ahem...not his, as well as sparkling jewelry and gems. There was shouting outside the tent. Worriedley, he exited the tent, and found that his troupes campsite was on fire. Apparently, it had been set ablaze in the middle of the night, and were just now putting out the blaze. Also, someone had stolen jewelry and valuables from various tents and trailers belonging to the troupe.
The mortal realized that those possessions were currently inside HIS tent, and with looming horror, understood that something bad was happening to him. Returning to his tent, the pseudodragon perched on top of his mirror beckoned to him. The mortal stood in front of the mirror, and saw that his eyes, once brown and mundane, were now a bright shade of pink...the same shade as the Archfey. Her amused laughter echoed through his thoughts.
Evidentally, the Archfey was not just seeing the world through his eyes...she was also possessing his body in his sleep. Realizing that everything that had transpired in the night...the fire, the theft, the revelry...had been him, the mortal quickly fled the troupe, knowing he'd be accused.
Now he wanders the Forgotten Realms, seeking some way to rid himself of the Archfey.
He makes Wisdom-Saving Throws each time he takes a rest, to see if the Archfey will possess his body. His eyes will turn pink if she possesses him, making him do chaotic things for her amusement, of the DM's choice. Sometimes, the Archfey will appear in reflections in mirrors or pools of water. His eyes will also turn pink when performing his Pact Magic, as they Archfey channels her magic through him. She also communicates occasionally through his mind, particularly when something interesting happens.
For the most part, it's harmless mischief. On long rests, however, if the saving throw isn't met, then sometimes something bad can happen...fires, antagonizing guards, stealing from wealthy nobles in town, occasional murder...
It keeps things interesting.
Aside from the bolsters to Eldritch Blast for damage, most spells are used to evade damage and cause misdirection. The Archfey gets great bonus spells, like Blink & Plant Growth, which make him hard to hit or get to. Plus, the short rest reaction of "Misty Step + Invisibility" means he can retreat when needed. With "Misty Visions", he can impose disadvantage by conjuring fog.
He is not a hero, or a fighter...he's just a normal dude in extraordinary situations. His pseudodragon, Vydastria, is actually a very reassuring companion who is friendly to him and is sympathetic to his struggles.
Made a Tiefling HexBlade called Skamos Valchar. Been playing D&D since 2nd edition and cant remember the last time I was so eager to play a character! And was really lucky with the stats, roll 15, 12, 15, 16, 17 and 17.
The abilities ended up like this: Str: 15, Dex: 16, Con: 18, Int: 13, Wis: 15 and Cha: 20.
Son of a female knight in Waterdeeep. Skemos’ mother had an affair with a tiefling in disguise, which seduced her and left her stranded bearing a child. Many of the other knights and inhabitants of Waterdeep scowled at her for raising the “misfit”. If not being a female knight was already hard enough, she had to work harder to earn respect after giving birth to a fiendish half-human. Gaining this through hard work and devotion, she also manage to carve a place for her son in the ranks of knights fighting for waterdhavian nobles. Meeting her demise way to early, at the age of 20 the freshly anointed knight started to feel the peer pressure of people thinking him a outsider in a so-called civilized major city. With the current events in the world, being different became harder. One day. false accusations about seductions and murders of innocent citizens made Skamos skip town and go into hiding. He is now tenacious in his efforts of trying to redeem himself. His endeavors has led him into the path of a mercenary to earn for his living. But one day he will return to Waterdeep and clear his name.
Heres the build up to lvl 9:
HexBlade patron
Invocations:
Thirsting Blade
Eldritch Spear
Agonizing Blast
Improved Pact Weapon
Eldritch Sight
Pact of the Blade
Spells:
Eldritch Blast
Minor Illusion
Sword Burst
Hex
Arms of Hadar
Thunder Step
Blight
Fly
Dimension Door
Shadow of Moil
Sickening Radience
Banishing Smite
Synaptic Static
And wielding a Glaive as I took the Polearm Master feat at lvl 8.
Was fascinated by the concept of a Patron that could, at the will of the DM, mess with the party.
Kudos to you for a great backstory. I like the “with Power comes a heavy price” angle. Although you willingly gave your DM a tool to mess with you and your party....good luck with that! Lol!
Time to make your character a Coffeelock who never takes long rests!
Cantrips: Eldritch Blast, Minor Illusion, Mage Hand (He never picks things up himself if he doesnt have to.)
Spells: Hex, Charm Person, Armor of Agathas, Bless, Command, Detect magic, Cure Wounds, Hellish Rebuke (cold damage tho), Purify food and drink, and Shield of Faith
Invocations
lv 2 - Improved Pact Weapon, Agonizing Blast
Patron: Osmanus, Elder god of death who is also currently dead and mostly forgotten.
Lived most of his life a slave. Osmanus, too weak to give his power like another god to a cleric/paladin, made a pact instead to help Endrik escape.
Recently after finally talking to Osmanus Endrik took his first levels in Paladin, showing both his devotion to his god and Osmanus's returning influence on the world.
Soon to be oath of the ancients. The best way to worship death is to live your life to the fullest and live it well after all.
Fallen, and no I haven't yet. Truthfully I didn't know about the guide until a couple days ago after rereading the Aasimar, but really I'd probably have Osmanus be more his guide than the angle. At some point should he survive and not grow cold to the world he'll end up becoming a protector aasimar. He was corrupted as a child by a cult, and i hope to purge the corruption from him at some point.
I would like to hear about your Warlocks and discuss them! I always like to design my own and want to hear about other ideas. What is your Patron? What spells do you choose? What pact do you have? If it gets too bad, there's an Eldritch Invocation that makes it so that the Warlock doesn't have to sleep during rests.
In character, it means that he's developed insomnia from not allowing the Archfey to mess with him.
