I'm Building a Tiefling warlock, Great old one, Pact of the Tome, building up to lvl 6. What are your guy's must have spells Besides the obvious eldritch blast. And what invocations do you take to utilize the few spells you can cast?
Hex is essentially a necessity. 1d6 damage for each ray of EB.
Beyond that, salt to taste. Personally I'm a fan of Hunger of Hadar at 3rd level, and Darkness + Devil's Sight at 2nd (for that sweet, sweet advantage).
Agonising Blast is a necessary invocation for an EB build. And you'll want the Book of Ancient Secrets invocation.
Since you always cast at your highest level slot, spells that increase when cast at a higher level are going to get extra benefits when cast as a Warlock.
Devils Sight, probably the best darkvision in D&D, its better than allegedly superior racial darkvision. So I also a curious as to why or how Devils Sight doesn't work and the same for Hunger of Hagar?
You can't use Devils sight cause HOH is not considered magical darkness but a gateway to a void in space. It's not magical darkness cause even magical light can't cancel it out. Hence why you hear random noises and are impeded.
If it was just a darkness spell you could cast a stronger light spell to cancel it out.
Was there an Unearthed Arcana or a FAQ about this?
Because initially I would interpet the Warlock spell Hunger of Hadar, as conjuring a space warp. To me Devils Sight would be the only way to see or at worst recognise that something was seriously wrong within that darkness...the milky white tentacles might be seen and noises are heard (its not a vacuum). Its not a darkness spell (an evocation which is cancelled by magical light evocation spells of a higher level).
Still the 1st level Conjuration - Fog Cloud obscures an area, so it could be argued that Hunger of Hadar also obscures. If I was the DM, I would make the Warlock make a perception roll and if the Hunger of Hadar is cast in a 4th or higher level spell slot then that roll would be with disadvantage.
Jeremy Crawford on Sage Advice said No. So the intent is for Hunger of Hadar to create an area effect of Blindness (possibly a handy way for Patrons to punish opposing Warlocks).
Note to self Warlocks love creating darkness as they are the only ones who possibly have Devils Sight. If you are a Warlock and know that an opposing Warlock has Devils Sight, then Hunger of Hadar is the method to spoil their day.
Also of note, the person originally mentioning HoH and DS didn't state them together. It was Darkness and Devil Sight as a combo, and HoH on its own as a must have warlock spell.
Pact of the Tome gives the Warlock access to 3 Cantrips from any other class (and they are cast as Warlock spells). It all depends on what you want to achieve or do. Guidance and Spare the Dying are useful in a party without a Cleric or a Bard. Shillelagh is handy for a Warlock who has got into Melee. The SCAG Cantrips are great especially for Bladelocks, Eldritch Knights and Fighters with Magic Initiate.
Rituals the bread and butter for a Tomelock with Book of Ancient Secrets. You should be able to 'persuade' someone to share their rituals with you either for free or at a modest cost (Deception, Intimdation or Persuasion). Find Familiar (Help action and more), Identify (You have Detect Magic either at will through Eldritch Sight or a wand then being able to identify a magic item is very useful). With more Warlock levels you could find Leomunds Tiny Hut and there are more rituals.
Useful spells for the Warlock, Mirror Image as it's handy not to be hit so easily. Misty Step is a bonus action, useful when your Pact Slot is second level, you Eldritch Blast, then Misty Step 30 feet and then move into cover. It's also great if you have a secondary class capable of second level spells (Bard, Sorcerer ideally, but Wizard, Cleric or Druid is fine). Hex and Expeditious Retreat are both excellent spells. Later spells such as Banishment are very useful it targets Charisma and majority of opponents focus on Con, Dex and Wis saves.
I think vampiric touch is underrated as it heals you, not just temporary hit points like in 3.5/Pathfinder. And you can keep touching people for upto 10 rounds. More so for a Bladelock but still healing, it works great if someone else has darkness cast and you have Devils Sight.
The spell Devil's Sight seems to be widely k own in the comments above. However, it is not in the Player's Handbook nor in this app, not even in the Homebrew spell list. Where is this spell from and what are it's abilities?
Hex is a very strong spell at low levels but its value declines as you level up and much more powerful concentration spells become available. You'll still be using hex for typical single-target attacks at that point, but there will be plenty of times when you'll need to drop it in favor of a different concentration spell.

Darkness and Devil's Sight seems good on paper, but it can be a pain for the rest of your party as you have just given them all disadvantage to hitting any of the other enemies...
I’ve found that, other than cantrips, there are no “must have” warlock spells. They only get 2 spell slots per short rest and even though short rests are more common than long rests, you won’t get one after every encounter.
Since your spell slots will be 3rd level, I’d suggest Misty Step or Thunder Step as an emergency escape spell. Other than that I’d take a cantrip that requires a save instead of an attack roll because Eldritch Blast isn’t always as effective as a spell that doesn’t require an attack roll.

Hunger of hagar and devils sight don't work.

I've seen people interpret hunger of hagar as a magical darkness you can't dispel.
I do agree it's a great spell though. Although as a fiend I'd probably just fireball everyone.
For me my spell choices would probably include green flame blade, the lightning lure, and booming blade (since I play pact of blade)
At first level I'm a big fan of either hex and expeditious retreat. Some times getting away from enemies is more important than doing more damage.
At second I highly suggest hold person as a spell. Darkness. I have yet to see misty step be used in combat.
I'm not able to cast third level yet but I highly expect it will be fireball.

Found it---invocation, not a spell

Hunger of hagar is not magical darkness. Technically it is a solid otherworldly mass.
