I'm currently DM'ing a campaign and have a wizard in the party. I want to edit their spellbook for the future so when they eventually get level 2 spells they don't have the full wizard list. Is there a way to edit my player's spellbook for spells they are not yet able to cast?
An example: I don't want them to be able to have Darkness in their spellbook because it's a scroll that can be found in the campaign. I'd like to per-emptively remove Darkness from their spellbook before they level up.
Update: When a Wizard in your campaign reaches a level when a higher spell slot is activated, their Spellbook has zero new spells of that new level. I was able to choose which spells I wanted them to have and which I wanted to keep available to discover before they even had a chance to see them.

Do you mean spell list? Spell list is the list of spells that can pick from. Spell book is the list of spells they have picked already (or learned from other spell books or scrolls).
You can't change the spell list. Darkness will always be on there. As the DM you can say Darkness is off limits for reasons, and slap their hand if they try to add it. If they do add it, as the DM you can remove it and tell them to pick something different. If they continue to insist on having it then you would need to have a conversation about your world and explain that some spells that are on the list should not be because it is your world and you decide what is in and what is not. If they insist at that point, you need to reevaluate if you guys want to continue playing together because a player that does not respect how the DM is running the game, does not need to play with that DM.
But there is no way to automatically make a spell unavailable to them.

What you request is not possible.
