So, I don't know how big of an issue this is. But today all of the custom portraits on my character sheets vanished. Leaving not even a the blank silhouette you get when you don't select a portrait. Just nothing.
I can't add any custom portrait as they don't show up, but the listed ones do. Is there any way to fix this, or should I just give up and never use custom portraits again. Because I spent a solid hour trying all that I could to no avail.
From my limited experience, it just seems like it can't seem to get the file from wherever its stored. Additionally, the file I uploaded is 211 KB, so its definitely not too big.

Are you also running chrome? Are you running any ad/popup blockers, browser extensions, or a VPN that may be interfering with DDB?
This issue seems to happen with almost any image. Homebrew monsters and existing ones (such as the full size Diseased Giant Rat or either version of the Ancient Blue Dragon images) don't load properly sometimes.
I am running chrome, and have popups allowed for DnDBeyond.
Even with Chrome, no extensions, no cookies blocked on Desktop or Mobile, many preset portraits don't load and no custom portraits load.
Yet, I switch to Edge (now fully Chromium-based) on Mobile and Desktop and all the portraits are there, even the ones I uploaded in Chrome but wouldn't show; which means the upload works in Chrome but won't display them.
They also show in the DDB mobile app and when editing through the DDB app's webpage window (but the upload button does nothing when I try to do it that way).
So, yes. It's a Chrome problem, but the question is: Why?
I'm beginning to encounter more occasional pages that ceased to work correctly in Chrome. What has Google done and why? Was there some exploit with how things were being done and they changed it; disabled rather; without telling anyone about it?
This doesn't seem to be a DDB thing but a Chrome thing. I love Chrome, but it's starting to look like I'm going to have to switch to Edge. I dislike having to switch browsers every 10 years. First, it was Netscape. Then, it was IE. Then, it was Firefox. Then, it was back to IE. Then, it was Chrome. Now, it seems like it's going to be Edge.

It's not just a Chrome issue; I'm using the latest version of Firefox, and I've been experiencing the same issue on all my characters (the ones that I've had character images set for, anyway) for the last several months, at least.

I have been having this problem too not just for Characters but also for magical items and monsters. I am running Version 91.0.4472.77 (Official Build) (64-bit) on my laptop but what is funny is everything, Character, Monster and Magic items comes up just fine on on the mobile chrome. So it seems that the PC chrome is where the problem is, not the mobile chrome. I just wanted add on to this from what I found out.

I have been playing RPG's and especially D&D since 1st ed AD&D and D&D Basic. Since those early years I have played a good number of more popular games. I enjoy playing with groups and DM/GM groups that are from diverse backgrounds. I feel any and everyone brings something special and wonderful to a gaming table. I tend to play more magic users though with 5ed I do have ideas for classes I normally would play. My favorites in the past are Wizards/mage, Rangers and Druids.
I don't know if this has been solved, but it happens for me once in a while. Usually if I clear my site cookies and reload the site it all shows up. Hope this helps.

It's ok Ranger, you'll always be cool to me.. Unless druid gets another use for its wild shape charges.
If anyone is having problems in Chrome, I tried Deadseven's recommendation and it appears to have worked. The portraits weirdly continued to not show up on the 'My Characters' section but re-uploading the portrait under the Character Builder appears to fix that issue.

Hi, what browser/OS are you using?

Chrome
Sounds like a chrome issue - I had it happen to me on a different site a while back.
I was able to resolve by clearing the browser cache.
Note - when using Chrome, it's possible to just clear cache for the current site:

I have this same issue as well. Even when clearing the cache and hard reloading, it still doesn't appear. Additionally, the console logs an error with a red X next to it:

It still happens.
It seems like the same thing that happened in this thread: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/bugs-support/79787-character-portraits-backdrops-constantly, which also never got a solution.
Are you running any VPNs or security software? Kaspersky is known to cause problems, but others have been reported too.

I too am having the same issue, also a Chrome user. Has been working fine for ages but has only become a problem in the last 3 weeks or so .
Interestingly, the custom picture on my characters load on the 'My Campaigns' page, but not on the 'My Characters' page or on the 'Character Sheet'.

I'm trying to gather more information on this. Has anyone had the images begin working for them after a period of time?

Not sure what the cause is, but no amount of force-refreshing with Ctrl+F5 has solved it.

Well I just encountered this problem on Edge.
Under the covers we see the error:
Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 400 () - https://www.dndbeyond.com/avatars/320/181/636622567351315751.jpeg?width=150&height=150&fit=crop&quality=95&auto=webp
Now in my case, when I past the entire URL into an older version of Chrome; the image appears in the browser.
But when I do it in Edge, I get an error:
