This is my first venture into the world of D&D, and I want to be a cleric, but I'd prefer to be a cleric of war domain, basically for some better offensive spells. Why is life domain the only choice? I know my fellow players want me to do nothing but heal them, but some other options would be cool.
As Grimmric mentioned, only the subclasses in the Basic Rules and SRD are provided for free. You can choose to purchase the PHB, or the relevant subclass from the Marketplace.
I had the same thought when I went to try to create a character I'm currently playing with, but I understand that everything can't be available for free... I already own physical copies of these books so I'm not really interested in paying what appears to be full price to buy a digital copy as well... maybe this site won't be as awesome as I had hoped.

The prices are significantly lower than what you would find in brick an mortar stores. Most of them are slightly less costly than physical copies on Amazon. BUT, if your primary concern is creating your current character, you don't have to buy the entire book(s). You can just buy the elements you need. (In the market place, click on the "View Purchase Options" in the relevant book listing to see the prices for individual elements). And, with the exception of subclasses, just about all the class options can be homebrewed if you have the books and don't want to pay for it. Homebrewing sub-classes is expected to be possible soon.

And, if you buy just what you need now, the books it comes from will be that much cheaper if you decide to buy them later.

I've got the players guide in hard cover too. So buying the full thing digitally is ridiculous. But I did find that you can purchase portions on their own. Helpful if if do decide to go with war domain. Right now my backstory leans more easily towards life. I'm currently weighing the two options.

If I didn't know the war domain was included in the player's handbook, how could I have found it? I searched for a while till I found this thread and couldn't for the live of me find the place to buy domains in the marketplace. Thanks for the link

It would, indeed, be nice if there were an index of sorts for that. For the moment, the best option is to ask in these forums. Maybe if there are enough such requests in the forums, creating a system that helps players find subclasses and the like will go up in priority.
EDIT: There might be another way, but I can't test it as i have access to all the content. If you go to Game Rules>Classes and choose a class, the sidebar might contain a list of all the subclasses even if you don't own them all. If that's the case, then clicking on one of those subclasses should take you to the Marketplace page for the book they are int.

Life cleric is the only free that is included in SRD.
If you want to use something else you need to buy the books at the Marketplace.
War Domain is included in Players handbook and you can buy the whole book or just the War domain if you want

I'm not stupid. I'm just unlucky when I'm thinking.
