Since always. Notice how some classes, like Fighter and Rogue get more of them? Notice how they appear specifically on the class tables? Notice there is no non-class table for 1-20 characters?
When your character gains a level, his or her class often grants additional features, as detailed in the class description. Some of these features allow you to increase your ability scores, either increasing two scores by 1 each or increasing one score by 2.
When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can’t increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.
Definitely not since always, but I may be thinking of the 3.x rule.

IIRC ASI were part of class progression in 3.5 edition. In some cases they had extra options like Wizards got Metamagic feats specifically for them (yes, metamagic used to be a Wizard thing).

Since always this edition. (Since this is the only edition that matters.)
That's fair, at least for WotC. I'm just going to chalk this up to the fact that my group hasn't exceeded level 5 with any campaign or party since 4th ed. Thanks to all for the input.
Be excellent to each other, and Game On, dudes!

Since when are ABI's a class level, not a character level thing?
