My DM granted me the 'Blinding Smite' spell after the last session and I'm trying to add it to my Bard's repertoire.
As I understand, you can add a non-class spell through a homebrew feat. However, after creating a feat, I can't find the spell to add to it. The only smite spell available when I search by spell name in the feat creation page is 'Branding Smite'.
Any idea why I can't find 'Blinding Smite'? Am I doing something wrong? Is there another way to add spells?
The Blinding Smite spell is from the Player's Handbook - you will need to purchase the spell, or the whole Player's Handbook, to be able to create homebrew using it.
My current situation is this: I am enrolled in a campaign that has content sharing enabled by the DM. I have checked and we do have the PHB among the bought sourcebooks that are being shared.
Should I not have access to the spell in this case? Or is it only available if I have it on my account?
Alternatively, can the DM, who already owns the PHB, create the feat with the spell and somehow assign it to my character? Since we have already paid for this content, it makes sense for me to also have access to it.
You only have access to that material in the campaign in which it is being shared, so not the homebrew generator. Your DM can 100% make the item, and as long as they keep it in their “collection” you should be able to add it to your character, either as an ASI like normal feats, or directly on the character sheet directly: “Features and Traits” “Feats” “Manage Feats.”
Hi! A kinda unrelated question to the OP, as I’m not trying to home-brew Blinding Smite. So my 9th level paladin doesn’t have Blinding Smite under her spells, even though it is a spell granted to 9th level paladins. So based on what I read from the earlier comments, that’s because I don’t own a copy of the PHB and I use the free version of D&D Beyond?

Correct. The only Paladin oath in the SRD, which is what the free version of D&D Beyond offers is the Oath Of Devotion. Either you would need to purchase your specific Paladin subclass, which should also include the spells offered to it or specifically the PHB.
Purchasing a subclass does not include the spells associated with it. If your subclass comes with spells that are not part of the free sources (referred to here as the Basic Rules) then you would need to buy the spells as well as buying the subclass. Spells can be purchased individually or as a group, if you wanted to buy all the spells from a given book. Either way, the cost of the purchase is deducted from the total cost of the book, should you wish to purchase it later. You can also homebrew them, if cost is an issue.

Also, if any of you has a subscription to this site, they can add other people’s homebrew s to their “collection” for the group to share too.
