It's not a bug. A missing feature, sure, but not a bug. A bug is where something is coded in that is not working. This is you requesting a feature not yet coded in. Big difference.
Please remember, you're not entitled to this feature. It is not important. And you can basically achieve a similar effect anyway.
On your sheet, under inventory, you can create a custom item - enter the name and in the Notes field enter the ammo effect - want an explosive arrow that does 2d6 fire damage? Then type +2d8 Fire Damage On Hit in the Notes field. Now when you think "have I got any fire arrows left?" you can look in your inventory (like you normally would in a paper+pencil game) see that you do, decrease quantity (the custom item stays even at 0 quantity, so you dont need to recreate if you get more) and exclaim to the DM you're using it.
You can also create a custom attack on the sheet to represent the use of your different types of magic arrows.
If you were using pencil and paper you'd have to write this stuff in yourself - the character sheet replicates this in a more space-efficient and easier way.
So if you want magic ammo - just add it to your sheet. It's not quite as convenient as just clicking "add" but it's a one time step that takes like 2 minutes at most.
I appreciate people saying you want the feature too but please stop with the "wtf why isn't this bug fixed yet" - it's disrespectful, it's a choosy beggar thing (it's a free service) and inaccurate (not a bug). It will be a long time before the feature is implemented - and it may never be, since you can just do it yourself.
Please be respectful about the completely free product you're using.
1. it is indeed a bug or an optimization/improvement because currently it allows or did allow you to choose Arrows+2 in the 'create magic item', which implies that you can create a magic arrow which is ammunition, which leads to an error or stops you from moving forward in the process of creating the item. so either that needs a ux fix or an improvement ( this can be a bug that also leads to possible new feature )
2. some of us do pay for this website, i.e it is not free.

OK, will correct you on two points:
1. You can create ammunition, magic or otherwise, directly on the sheet as I have described. Therefore the feature you request is present and working - it may not be the "way you want it" but it IS there and does work. It is therefore not a bug. It is a request for improvement which is not a bug. You have the means to create and track ammunition on your sheet. Therefore, it works, not a bug.
This thread is marked a bug only because of the issue presented in the initial post regarding a specific process of creating magic arrows using the Homebrew tools. That, specifically, IS a bug. However, the "making ammunition", magic or not, is NOT a bug because you can do it. Please remember this thread was made and marked BEFORE the updates to the Character Sheet which allowed you create ammo directly on the sheet instead of having to use the magic item homebrew tool. Technically, in terms of offering the option to create ammo (magic or otherwise) that has been fixed.
2. You pay for specific options to be usable or for compendium content you can read and you can pay through subscriptions certain services such as extra character shots, the option to add published homebrew to your collection, and the option to share paid content with others in a campaign. None of these paid-for features involve your ability to create ammo. Everyone on the site, gets that feature for free. It is not something you pay for. The character sheet itself is not something you pay for. So yes, this is a FREE feature you're talking about. Because it is free, it is what it is - D&D Beyond are not obligated to provide new features, provide improvements on existing features you can already do (like creating ammo) and unless it was something you specifically paid for they are not obligated to fix bugs at all. If the bug was specific to, say, a race you bought then yes they'd have to fix that. But a non-bug for something free? Nope.
--
If you want to create ammunition, magical or otherwise, you can do so. The feature is present - you can do it right from the character sheet.
If you're after the option to create the ammunition through the use of the Magic Item homebrew tool, so you don't have to recreate things for new characters, this is planned and will be done later - when they revamp the homebrew tools, which will probably be later next year. They are not obligated to do any of this but are doing so and will do so when it best suits them - which is their right since this is an optional improvement on something they provide you for free.

If you would like to add to this thread please be respectful of these facts - adding that you would like this feature is great, whining they're not doing it fast enough for you is, however, disrespectful and pointless.

please show me where he said it is a bug? [REDACTED], it is disrespectful of people that are trying to figure out why this doesn't work. Yes it is a missing feature, yes it is a shitty product, yes I have paid a lot of money, because they have said they plan on adding things. And if the good people at DnDbeyond want us to stop using their software, I would appreciate them saying so, rather than you speaking for them.
Hi -- I'm having trouble with homebrewing Arrows +2 (magic damage, +2 bonus to attack, +2 damage roll). Here are the steps I took...
clicked 'Items' > clicked 'Create a magic item' > selected 'Arrows, +2' from the drop down list > clicked 'Create' > revised NAME field to 'Arrows +2' > clicked 'Save Changes' > received 'You must select a weapon type' red error message underneath the 'Base Weapon' drop down > selected the drop down and searched for 'Arrows', but could not find
Should I just select 'Shortbow' or 'Longbow' instead or should there be an 'Arrows' choice in that drop down?
Thanks
Notes: Please keep comments constructive and respectful of others.
I decline. Defeats the point of a forum, really. I am not being rude to anyone, just stating some facts of the matter. There is no need to devolve into pointless vulgarities.
it is disrespectful of people that are trying to figure out why this doesn't work.
My posts have absolutely nothing to do with anyone posting about the genuine reasons of why it doesn't work. But few posts are doing that. The reason why it doesn't work that way is because it was not properly coded to do so as a result of the limitations of the homebrew system currently in place. This is why the system is being revamped so stuff like this can be more easily added in.
My posts are directed at those who are whining about the length of time it is taking. My posts are based on two things: 1, they are not entitled to the requested feature and 2, the requested feature already works. They're waiting for something that has already been included in the character sheet.
The ability to make the ammo using the magic item homebrew tool is a missing feature, agreed. But the ability to make ammo for use on the character sheet is not a missing feature - because this feature is present and working on the character sheet.
On this we very much disagree. I like this site and the tools it offers are second to none. Not perfect by any means, but I do not indulge such false pursuits of perfection. The products this site offers are mostly threefold: a free to use character sheet for tracking data on your character sheet, homebrew tools for customisation, the official D&D 5th Edition content. The first is brilliant for what it is and the best that's available anywhere - it does everything it says it will and more. You can track more on this character sheet than you can on most others with better autocalculation. And it's completely free, which is amazing - character creation tools of this caliber used to require money. The homebrew tools are quite decent, you can get a lot done with them. Now, they are limited and there are moments where it can be restrictive but still better than pen and paper by a lot. I am anxious as anyone to see what we will get when these are revamped. As a codehead myself I have concerns about how they'll approach it but fully anticipate that even if the revamp will not be all it could have been it will still improve on the areas this current system is lacking in.
yes I have paid a lot of money, because they have said they plan on adding things.
And they did add things. They are adding more things. They added the option to create ammo on the sheet, thus resolving the problem this thread is about. They add all new official content very quickly. They update all errata when it is released. They add Unearthed Arcana for you to easily playtest these if you want. And they plan to revamp the homebrew tools which means not only would you be able to add your ammo directly via the sheet you'll also be able to add it through the homebrew tools so you don't have to recreate it for each new character.
However, your payments only grant what you specifically pay for - the compendiums and ability to easily use the races and feats etc in your character sheet. It does not mean you get to stamp your feet impatiently for something offered for free. You are not buying the right to dictate how they approach their development or the right to demand anything be done according to your timetable.
They have to do a lot of things for WotC official content to make everything available in compendiums, to make everything work in crosslinks, in the searches, and of course the character sheet tool. They also have to do this with unearthed arcana. There's been a lot of new content being released, including multiple soucebooks at once, which all takes time and all of which they are contractually obligated to prioritise. Then there are many high priority requests in development they have to work on which are, quite rightly, priorisitied over this ammo isue for simple reason: this issue was resolved quite some time ago - the custom actions and custom equipment improvements to the character sheet have presented that solution. It may not be the most ideal but it does what is asked. A better version is on the way.
After these projects will be the homebrew revamp that will improve on the ammo thing. However, this is an extremely difficult thing to code up and will take a very long time. If they were starting from scratch that would be easier and faster and we'd probably have it by now - but they're not. The current system, which was never intended to be a proper homebrew tool, makes it difficult because they now have to factor the backwards compatibility with what has already been released. I can explain further (and have done elsewhere) but it's 4:16 am and not the main crux of my point in posting: so please just trust it's difficult. But it is on the way.
I am sorry if you feel offended by my posts but they are not offensively written so I must wonder why you feel such. All I am asking is for the people who are complaining about a wait time for a feature already present and working over a feature that is part of a free product (which IS free regardless of how much money you invested in the non-free products offered). It is coming across as people complaining they are thirsty while holding a glass of water. And such a thing is being disrespectful to the developers who worked hard to provide the solution already offered, and working towards an improvement while working hard on making official WotC work, while working hard to re-code, re-hash and re-work things just to make some playtest unearthed arcana work (Class Variants), while also working hard to create a system to help give them more time for future releases.
As a codehead who knows some of what they go through and how none of this is a "10 minute fix" as others have said, I felt it necessary to remind people to be more respectful and to remind them the feature to add custom ammo is already here, available, for free and working.
On thinking further, may I ask that if you or anyone has some sort of big rebuttal perhaps it is better to send it to me via PM.
While these posts are on topic, I feel that more back-and-forth will just end up becoming more of an argument than a discussion. I like arguments as much as anyone (probably a little too much) but in this case such arguing would only hinder the thread rather than help it. Happy to discuss further in private if you want.
I don't see how there is any question about this being a bug. The fact that you can't even copy the basic +x Ammunition items that already exist and gives you an error about it when you try to save it makes the whole thing seen pretty clear to me. If they want to say it's a known bug they don't want to fix right now, then just call it that and be done with it. But don't call it a feature addition if it's something that's actually in the damn menu already.
They have a Homebrew overhaul planned later in the future. I would imagine that this bug will be fixed once that is implemented. However, it is something that is planned in the long term so it could be quite a while before this gets fixed.
It's been what, three years? As far as I'm aware from a backend perspective, it's simply a matter of adding an ammunition category to the homebrew weapon drop down. Literally nothing system breaking, and would take five minutes to do - it's just to appease the silly red text that requires us to categorize every homebrew item. Sure, updating existing compendium entries of magical ammunition might be an undertaking, but for the purposes of giving users something to work with, it's such a small job that really should've been done by now.
I love this site so much - wouldn't be subbing if I didn't - but there are just these edge cases that stop it from being the best it can be.
For those complaining about how long this bug has apparently been open, one thing to consider is the size of the development team. From my conversations with some of the actual developers at various conventions, it doesn't sound like they have a giant staff of engineers sitting around with nothing to do. A lot of people are asking for a lot of features and bug fixes, and ultimately this one probably just keeps getting deprioritized in favor of things that would make more people happier.
I work on a team of about two dozen front end engineers, and we have bugs that have stuck around in our backlogs for quite some time mainly because there are many more important things that do more to improve the user experience than those particular minor inconveniences.
I personally would love for this bug to get fixed mainly because I'm looking at homebrewing arrows right now, but ultimately it's a small thing in the bigger picture of the product.

The real question, though, is whether you're actually aware or just making assumptions. I'll grant you that it seems like it would be a relatively minor change, but without knowing what the architecture and design of the system is, it's tough to be able to say for certain that this is a minor task.
and still no fix. it is most definitely a bug/improvement. they shipped a feature where you can add an item(+1 arrow) and not save or complete the task. that is a bug. now the easy fix is to remove the +arrow from the homebrew list. now it's not a bug anymore but a missing feature. but as is...a bug.
idk what they can do. because to make ammunition a good feature you need "quantity" and the ability to make it effect only ranged weapons of a certain type. i.e to fully work i'd want to see that ranged weapon damage+1 to my long bow attacks only and not all crossbow or something.

I have found ways to make ammo in the app, however there is no item type specifically for ammunition. Or if there is please let me know what I need to do to get my home brew arrows to be a consumable that isn't a potion.

It’s even janking up their implementation of official rules. Look at the Walloping Ammunition and the Unbreakable Arrow.

i'm still here waiting.
and still no fix. it is most definitely a bug/improvement. they shipped a feature where you can add an item(+1 arrow) and not save or complete the task. that is a bug. now the easy fix is to remove the +arrow from the homebrew list. now it's not a bug anymore but a missing feature. but as is...a bug.
idk what they can do. because to make ammunition a good feature you need "quantity" and the ability to make it effect only ranged weapons of a certain type. i.e to fully work i'd want to see that ranged weapon damage+1 to my long bow attacks only and not all crossbow or something.
It also needs to be “wieldable.”

I have found ways to make ammo in the app, however there is no item type specifically for ammunition. Or if there is please let me know what I need to do to get my home brew arrows to be a consumable that isn't a potion.
please add ammo to homebrew. kk thanks
I just ran into the identical genuine trouble. I went from having 20 things in system of website to eighty simply via including a few Homebrew arrows.
It would be very usefull if you add ammo to homebrew options. As mentioned above there is lot of interested people, and problem doesn't look complex.
