As others have said, definitely a bug. You can select "Copy of Arrows" but cannot create said copy due to missing base weapon type. That's a broken workflow and therefore a bug. So either the ammunition shouldn't be available in the dropdown to copy or the base weapon type should be available to complete the workflow.
Yes, I am also requesting this base weapon type be added.
Running into this today - my party came up with the most-excellent idea to harvest teeth from slain dragons in Rise of Tiamat, and the Ranger asked to craft arrows and crossbow bolts for 4 party members (3 for arrows, 1 for bolts). On the spot, I came up with (what we thought was a fair process) and today decided to enter that into DDB, so they could all have the EXACT SAME ammo (though one would be Arrows, and another Bolts). Hmmm ... bug encountered. Surely it has to be easier than building this FOUR times on various characters' sheets. I wanted to focus on them being non-magical, so ... Wonderous Item didn't fit. I must have repeated the COPY workflow for Arrows of Slaying, Arrows +1, +2, and +3 (at least) before I realized this must be a bug.
Note, I could easily follow this workflow for a Dagger and a Shortsword from claws/fangs.
From an end-user perspective, this is a bug, NOT a feature request. Arrows of Slaying are in the Copy Workflow, but you can't copy that, change the name, and hit "save." It processes as an error.
I have 10 players - do we have to beg for this 10 times to demonstrate impact?

Hey, we are getting new digital dice to spend money on, be happy.
Seriously. Between this and the lack of a 'Bag Of Holding' management system, I'm finding it very difficult to feel like it's even remotely worthwhile to put money into this duct-tape and twine service.
The support offered for very basic features is shockingly bad.
You can create ammunition. The base weapon type will be the weapon to be used. So longbow or shortbow for arrows, the various crossbows for bolts, etc. It's how the devs make official ammunition.

Not really. That doesn't create the same way of tracking uses and weight that official ammo has. Also, that isn't how ammo is done by the developers. The weapon subtype for ammo is left blank for the official ammo items. If you try to leave that same field blank on your homebrew, it won't let you save it. The best way to see this is to try to make a copy of an official ammo item as a homebrew. You can't save even a copy of an existing item - as ammo - because there's no sub-type option for ammo. If you save it as a bow or blowgun, like you suggest, it will show up in a character's inventory weighing as much as a bow. And if you add say twenty arrows this way, they will each be listed separately on the inventory, which will overencumber the character as it appears to be carrying twenty longbows.
3.5 years later and still silence from the devs... and people rally against me when i try to talk about their blatant negligence of the homebrew systems. Im tempted to make a "10 problems with homebrew on DDB that we would appreciate fixes for" but i would get boo'd of the forums, as usual.

You can adjust the weight of any item you create, so you would not be encumbered. Now the inventory management issue is on me, I completely misremembered, however, there's also an easy workaround. Give the item charges and tick them off as you use ammunition.

But if all you're doing is piecing together workarounds, then this is definitely still considered a bug, right? I solved the problem by giving my party's archer potions with different names. I suppose you could also do it with wands that have charges. Really though, you should be able to do it with custom ammunition

Eh, i don't know that i would necessarily qualify this as a bug, but it's really just semantics. You are correct, it is a workaround, but unless we all want to sit in the problem and be frustrated by it I don't see the issue with a valid workaround.

Except then the charges are the same for every instance of the item. So let's say the character finds 4 magic bolts, but the charges on your homebrew item is set to 20. Or one character gives half the 20 to another character, etc. Yeah, with a bunch of additional effort or could still be tracked. But then, it could also just be designed to implement the rules allowing for a homebrew weapon subtype. So yeah . . . Just fix it.
Except that pieces of ammunition are not weapons (or else you would only be able to draw 1 arrow per turn). If DDB reclassified ammo as a weapon it could get them in trouble with the game’s publisher.
To be clear, I really want them to allow us to homebrew magical ammunition too. We’re just going to have to wait until the DDB Devs finish the complete overhaul of the Homebrew creation software that they have been working on.
In the meantime, one could potentially use wondrous items, potions, or scrolls as stand-ins for ammo. It really depends on which one you prefer based on how it formats on the character sheet. (Potions and Scrolls can stack in the Pc’s inventory but not be equipped, wondrous items can be equipped but don’t stack in inventory.)
I believe the theory was that magic ammo would be rare enough that if the party found any that isn’t listed in the DMG, that they would only find one or two of each kind and therefore they would need to be equipable, but not need to stack in inventory, so they expected us to simply use Wondrous Items for making ammo.
I personally prefer making ammo as custom items directly on the character sheet. For me as a player to track my own stuff, I just prefer it since a custom item can be equipped, and they stack in inventory too.
However, if more than one character gets the same ammo then each player has to enter it individually on their own sheet. As a DM, I either suggest it to my players, or I just take the steps to do it for them so they have the convenience and I have the piece of mind knowing it was done right. If I really really needed to hand them out in batches to people for some reason, I would likely use a potion/scroll as a template since they stack in inventory.

I definitely agree with you. I would rather have the workaround than nothing at all. I was more addressing the strangely large group of people on this thread that have said that this is a feature request more than a bug.

2020 and still no solution to this...
There is a solution. You can create homebrew ammunition. It's just on a per-sheet basis.

Just so it's out there, this is still an issue in 2020.
Don't question their shitty job. Buy digital dice.
Shockingly still an issue at this time... and the "per sheet" option is not a solution whatsoever. C'mon DnDBeyond staff!
Still no fix for this? Add me to the list of those who'd like to see functioning homebrew ammo added.
