I bought the digital version of the PHB using a code that came with a physical one, so now I can, for example, add spells to my character that are in the PHB, because the DnD Beyond content you can use corresponds to content you've purchased. So if someone never bought any digital sourcebooks, what would they be stuck with? I mean where does this base content come from, because everything in the PHB isn't available for free.
the Basic Rules aka the SRD as provided by WotC as well as the free Elemental Evil Player's Companion.

Trying to get your physical content on Beyond is like going to Microsoft and saying "I have a physical Playstation disk, give me a digital Xbox version!"

It should be noted the Player's Handbook doesn't come with a code for redemption on D&D Beyond. There is a 50% off code for the PHB found in the Essentials Kit, which also includes a code for the Dragon of Icespire Peak adventure. Are you maybe accessing the Basic Rules content as mentioned above?

Well, technically the Basic Rules and the SRD are completely separate documents and include different content. For example. The Basic Rules only include Fighter, Rogue, Cleric, and Wizard and a single subclass for each. The SRD includes one subclass for each class (except Artificer). DDB took both documents and crammed them together for our convenience, but technically they are not the same thing.

That's exactly, what I wanted to know, thanks!
