So I like the wild shape changing the character sheet idea but would love if you could do the same for other effects like lycanthropy or polymorph. This things always slowed down our games as the rules lawyers would come out .
I feel the same about paper characters but man the amount of time I waste sifting through notebooks and loose papers, could make the game that much better.
Maybe I'm the only control freak here but I doubt it. I keep copies of my players characters if at all possible (sometimes I just don't have a scanner ) so that I don't have to keep asking who knows what language or whatever. I think keeping digital versions of your strict pen and paper people sounds like a good idea. Or are you thinking they won't have a print button?
I do believe that we are just about guaranteed at least the name generator, as Wizards has one on their site already.
Edit: Also, I would love automatic leveling to be available, but not forced(toggleable). So prefer to do the math and remember the stats themselves, and others would like to use a feature like that.
Also, an items screen. Not EQUIPPED ITEMS. Not EQUIPMENT. ITEMS.
It's very hard to find a dynamic one with items...

I concur with your idea about having the autoleveling optional, and I would go so far as to see to make most of the things, beyond the bare-boned basics, optional/toggleable.
I also like the idea of a dynamic items screen.

Do not expect people to be smart, but do not allow them to be stupid. If there is one thing I have learned it is this.
I would like to request either customizable fields in the character sheet OR ones that are based on class and college, circle, domain etc. This could also work for those races or classes that have a once per (day, long rest, short rest) spell or ability. I have modified some character sheets for friends I play with specifically for these, which makes forgetting about them harder.
Examples. For bard have a bardic inspiration tracker, that also resets on the correct rest. Divination wizard having area to input the portent dice rolls.
YES!!! Inspiration, Rage, Bladesong, breath weapon, so many ideas
I really want some simple, built-in tools for creating custom backgrounds. I almost never use a background exactly as presented in the PHB, so it'd be great if I could swap out the simpler elements however I'd like. Technically, I suppose this capability would be a very basic form of homebrew, but short of creating entirely new background abilities, I would hope this is basic enough functionality to be free for everyone.
On the topic of simple rules customization, I would also need the ability to edit spell lists, familiar selection, magic items, etc. I suppose this could and should be handled in homebrew, but once these funcionalities are included there, they need to be represented in the character builder and on the character sheet too.
I would love the ability to set different level's for one character. In other words I would like to be able to fill in every level for a character, so when the time comes to level up all I have to do is click a button, rather than keeping notes on the spells/feats/abilities that I plan to take when I level up.
I think it's also very important that it will be easy for homebrew content creators to program in how their content will work with the character sheet. In light of this I think there is a fine line between making it a very useful tool, that isn't just a pdf style thing that you fill in, and making it something that assists the user so much that its impossible to implement custom content.
I would love for any unearthed arcana stuff to be supported through the homebrew system, but thats all phase 3 stuff, I'm getting ahead of myself.
I apologize in advance if this has been said already either here or somewhere else, but for those of us that play by post almost exclusively (yes I just threw myself a pity party), it would be VERY nice to have the ability to have multiple "characters" as part of our forum account. Meaning my default forum posting name would be temohjyn, but then I need to be able to create multiple other names (with their own images) all linked to temohjyn, so that I can participate in multiple PbPs all at the same time. Reason I'm posting this request here, is that as part of that request it would be INSANELY awesome if each of those characters could be directly linked to a dynamic update-able digital sheet that was part of the character creation software. That could also be a part of the pricing protocol. Maybe like, as part of the lowest tier of subscription you can only have three separate characters on your account, but then go up a pricing tier and you can have up to ten separate characters all linked to their dynamic digital sheets on the same account. So on and so forth. Does that make sense?
maybe when you gain a level prompt the user for a list of things that happen and what to choose based on their class. For example, when you increase the level to 3 as a paladin, prompt the user that they now have "Divine Health"; then prompt them to "Choose your Oath", gather your "oath spells" and "channel divinity"; update your "prepared spells"; then when you reach level 4 have a prompt for "ability score improvement or feat" etc.
I understand with homebrew options and changing some rules that automatically updating your sheet for you wouldn't fly, and I don't think that's necessary and isn't what I'm going for. I don't want the app to play the game for me.
I'm looking for more of a reminder to pop up and say all of the things you can do when you reach that level. Maybe just 1 popup that says "You've reached level 3, you now have Divine Health. Remember to choose your oath, gather your oath spells, and update your prepared spell count (if it has changed) and spell slots." "You've reached level 4, remember to take your Ability Score Improvement and update your prepared spell count (if it has changed)."
Also in that popup maybe link each major item (or have a mouseover for desktop) for like "Divine Health" or any feature/ability. Maybe even a quick link to Ability Score Improvement or the Feats section for those things. Make any major word/category a link or mouseover to that rule/ability/section/list (like make "Spell Slots" a link and link it to your class Spell slots per level table, or even the multi-class spell slot rule section)

I also see how this can be annoying if just playing with concepts/looking forward and changing the level and having this constantly pop-up. Make it an option to toggle on/off (Do you want leveling tips? and a checkbox)

Well, once it has a toggle, they could also a more aggressive tutorial-style leveling system that just gives you your options in the official rules. I don't want to accidentally forget to do one of my level-up things (I'm really bad about this with spells).
Links form your players spells page to the spell list that could just open a pop up or new tab as opposed to linking to navigating away from the character page section.

Do not expect people to be smart, but do not allow them to be stupid. If there is one thing I have learned it is this.
A "historical" view of the character or a "campaign" version of a character.
Historical view would work like a change log. So you could track when you got an item or changed a spell. This would allow players to re-use earlier versions of their character in another campaign or for one-shots.
Campaign view would allow a player to re-use their favorite character in multiple campaigns without mixing up rewards from campaigns
I want AL-based integrations... Log sheets for sure. Magic item logs (could be built straight off the log sheet) There's a great open source application @ http://www.adventurersleaguelog.com that would serve you all well as an example.
Also, spellbooks.

I would actually really like a "map page" option, where I can easily track which cities I've been to, and maybe even make notes about what I did there, or where major npcs reside. A lot of the time my roleplay gets lost because I can't recall if I've even been to such and such town, or where I ran into that awesome dragon, a map with little drop pins would really help track that. Oh! and little feet marks can show up to show the route that we traveled. This could also be a really cool way to share how different parties tackled major adventures.

I had just come here to suggest exactly this. In fact what would be really ideal is a git-style version tree, where you can branch off older versions. That way people could theorycraft a character's progression in advance of a campaign, and then "merge in" changes as they level up etc, or branch off versions for different campaigns without losing the original history.
Another feature I'd really like is to save any content you've created (character sheets, campaign info, imported homebrew) outside D&D:B. Save to disk, cloud services like google drive or dropbox; I just want to ensure I am the one in control of that information. It would also be really helpful if we'll be expected to pay more for more character sheet slots - export/copy the sheets elsewhere, delete ones you're not using from D&D:B. Then if you're retiring a current character and resurrecting a previous one, you can export the one and re-import the other. You'll still only be able to use so many in the app at a time, but it means I don't need to worry about various theorycrafted characters taking up space I need for a current campaign.
