I'm looking at possibly taking the Aspect of the Moon invocation for my warlock but can't find it in the marketplace... What would I need to buy to get this?
Please note that it requires the Pact of the Tome feature as a prerequisite, so I believe that you will also need the full Warlock class from the Player's Handbook.
Would you (or anyone) know specifically what I need to purchase from the marketplace to get this though? I'm trying to NOT buy the entire book(s) if I can help it. (I'd rather pay the $2 vs $30+ if it's for a single thing...)
The marketplace page for Xanathar's Guide doesn't list Aspect of the Moon. The marketplace page for the Players Handbook doesn't list anything about Warlocks other than a few feats (which I don't need) and a couple of patrons (and I'm not taking "The Great Old One" or "The Archfey" from the PHB because I'm not going to use either). I have the Pact of the Tome feature selected on my character, and I can even select the "Book of Ancient Secrets" invocation, which also has Pact of the Tome as a prerequisite.
And actually looking a bit closer, it appears none of the Xanathar's Guide to Everything warlock eldritch invocations are listed, regardless of prerequisite ... which obviously means I need to buy them ... but buy what? The whole book? They're not listed separately so it's either that... or maybe "Compendium Content Only" for $19.99 (which is just $10 less than the whole book ... and which would suck to need to buy for just one single thing! ... and we can't even homebrew invocations yet)
I really wish dndbeyond made it easier to find things you don't have, and specifically tell you what you need to buy from the marketplace to get them. Even if it's JUST the name of the thing without any detail, it would be better than nothing at all, which is what I'm seeing right now ... It would even be really helpful if on the character creation, it listed everything you don't have (at least as an option), with some kind of indication that you don't have it, which then selecting would take you to exactly what you need to buy from the marketplace... Seems to me like dndbeyond could sell a lot more if people knew exactly what they were missing!
The Warlock itself is available through the Basic Rules as well as the Fiend patron. Go here if you want other subclasses (Warlock subclasses start with 'The').
And you will probably need the entirety of Xanathar's because you can't individually buy invocations.
You should just be able to purchase one of the warlock subclasses in Xanathar's to get access to the invocations. I asked about that a while back and that's what I was told by staff. Unfortunately, I can't get search to work to find the thread to share here.
Hi ArwensDaughter, thanks that worked! I purchased the Celestial and got all of the invocations from Xanathar's.
It's great that you get them all for the $2 with the subclass.. it's too bad they don't make it clear what you're getting with all purchases though.. this could easily have been avoided by adding a simple list of what you get to the marketplace page. They could definitely improve the searching and buying experience. One shouldn't have to guess or ask on a forum how to give them money to get what you want.
edit: note to dndbeyond staff (do they even read this?), I would have spent the $2 on JUST the one invocation I wanted, had it been available ;) ... but... if you really want to bundle the invocations (which is cool with me!), a separate listing for all of the invocations in Xanathar's guide would make sense, not tied any of the warlock sub-classes, since they aren't.. then you could make an extra $2 on sub-classes + $2 for invocations! you're leaving money on the table there :P
I'm glad it worked! I had asked, mostly out of curiosity, as a followup to a bug report I was helping to verify. I hadn't actually tried it, as I don't currently don't need the additional invocations, and I'm trying to be attentive to my budget restraints.
The warlock class is kind of an odd duck: with options (pact and invocations) that don't really fall under the subclass banner, which means it doesn't neatly fit in their pricing structure. But it would be nice if they were a lot clearer about what's included in that regard.
Honestly... those who says they should buy the 2$ item are far from the truth... say you buy 10 item at 2$. thats 20$ you just paid for 10 items, at that point you add 4$ and you just bought the whole book complete with compendium and like 3 times the number of items.
honestly, buying things at 2$ each items, is not worth it. know what is though ? buying the player options all in one go. you literally save the price of a bunch of items and compendiums are all 10$. so if you are not in on compendium, then just dont buy the compendium and buy the rest.
that's what i like about Beyond.... the more you buy, the less it costs you. and we're not talking 2-3$ rebate here... we're talking literally of upward 50% price reduction. yeah i dont suggest to buy on a per item basis.... stack them items and see for yourself how much you will save in the long run.

Not everyone can afford to pay outside of a few dollars at a time.
Also (and I may be misinterpreting) but you seem to be under the impression that if you buy a piece of the content that if the person decides to buy the whole book after, they have to pay full price. Each time you pay for a piece of content from a book, it subtracts it from the overall price of the book. So if you spend 10 dollars on Xanathars' subclasses, and then after the fact decide to purchase it, you pay $10 less.
Additionally, for all we know, the OP doesn't need anything outside of that specific subclass, in which case it's kind of silly to purchase the entire book/compendium if you only need 1 thing from it.
That is correct (GrandPyromania), I'm not looking to spend on anything I'm not going to use immediately. So having a bunch of all those things I don't now need, and may never use, is literally a waste of money. And as you say, the more you buy the less the whole book will cost if you decide to get the whole book (which is an awesome feature of dndbeyond!).
So if I need 14 more things and it adds up to the $30 for the full Xanathar's guide, then I'd just buy the whole book and have everything on top of that, at the reduced price. But until that time, $2 is literally $28 less than $30, so yes, it's a significant savings to NOT buy the whole thing. (plus it's actually closer ~$2.70 in Canadian bucks thanks to our glorious exchange rate... so ya).
As for the marketplace, as I stated, they should really work on adding transparency to what you're purchasing with each item. If a sub-class has a dozen features that you can't get separately, it should list those features, if only by name, so that you can find them (ideally in search as well... ie: if I dont just "KNOW" that something is in Xanathar's Guide, and it's not listed on the marketplace, how can I ever find it?). As ArwensDaughter pointed out, warlock is odd since these sub-class "features" aren't actually tied to the specific sub-class .. and for all I know it's the only class that has this issue (I'm still pretty new to D&D so I dont know), but dndbeyond should definitely be aware of this and find some way to fix it.
Also ... and I have NOT tested this ... but if the marketplace allows you to buy individual items and spend more than the value of the whole book, then that would be seriously broken. You shouldn't be able to purchase >$30 worth of items from a book worth $30 for the whole thing, it should automatically give you the whole book and not charge you more than the cost of the whole book.
Unfortunately, it does... if you buy say 10 items because thats what you want right now... it will have costed you 20$. but since you bought all items individually, you dont get any exchange rate or anything. you could buy all 35 items and pay literally twice the anount you should. and the fact is, it is up to you to figure out what you want and need, not up to them. thats why i preffer to buy the books and players options as a whole. cost much much less.
also, they do offer bundles of character options, which literally saves you more then buying the 2$ options.
say you want the warlock achetypes... you literally pay 5$ for the class, but the whole character options cost you 7$ already. so already by buying the 2 dollars one, you already overshot the rest of the book. because you would of gained all charcater options by paying 7$ , but now you have only 1 archetype for literally the same amount. if you look at it, sure the bundle for class will have lowered because of your purchase. but reality is, the other individual items wont have changed. so on the next instead of buying the thing you need, it is up to you to tell them ill buy the reduced bundle instead and just buy everything at once instead.
what they do reduce is the entire bundle, they dont reduce individual items, that would make no sense. what does make sense, is that you pay more for individual items you are buying contrary to the bundles. so of course the bundles will be reduced, but not the individual items.
again, compendium are 10$ each everytimes... if you dont want them and just want the charcater options, you are already down beloe 10$ per book. as the options for all charcaters are like between 4-7$ each bundles. that is literally nothing if you ask me.

Hi there Procrastinus,
the Aspect of the Moon invocation is found in Xanathar's Guide to Everything.
Please note that it requires the Pact of the Tome feature as a prerequisite, so I believe that you will also need the full Warlock class from the Player's Handbook.
