I've tried to find clarification on this in the forums, but there are just too many pages to go through. Sorry if this has been asked and answered...
On this site you mention that the Digital versions of the Player's Handbook, etc. are a "one time purchase..." Does this mean that, as Wizards of the Coast update and change/revise individual classes, campaigns, monsters, etc., the new updated materials will be made available to me at no additional cost? I understand that this would only apply to the Edition I currently own (5e) and that if/when 6e comes out, everything would have to be purchased again.
It depends on how it is released. If it is official errata that affects all printed books going forward, it should be updated in the compendium to reflect the update.
If it is released as content in a new book, you will have to purchase that book.
When you reference "errata", that implies a mistake of some sort that is corrected at a later date. I'm talking about something like the Unearthed Arcana: The Ranger Revised, where they (WotC) rework an existing "thing" that wasn't really working as intended so that it does work and now those are the new rules for this already established "thing". So, not a new book, but an addition to the existing book.

Did that make any sense at all? :-)
Unearthed Arcana is not a new set of official rules or classes, is playtesting material. Anyhow, unearthed arcana content is being added to DDB starting from January 2018, and the content will be removed if published in a book or if WotC says so.

We're March 2018 and almost nothing from Unearthed Arcana is available.

From January 2018, only the Brute, The School of INvention and the Circle of the Spores have been released by WotC as playtesting material. Those subclasses are available in DDB.
I msread what you put earlier, I thought you said that from Jan 18 you will be adding UA content when what you actually put was you are adding only UA content released after Jan 18. My apologies.
I know the Unearthed Arcana stuff is playtest material. I know its not published work. I understand that.
My question is...IF something is changed or added by WotC in the future, in an official way, that only affects the current edition, will that new information be made available to me at no charge if I purchase the PHB and XGTE today.
I guess you could equate it to a Patch Update for something like World of Warcraft...patches are coming in all the time and we don't pay for them. We only pay for the "new" expansions as they come in. Would this work in a similar way?

Also, in regards to the revised ranger specifically, WotC has said that it will eventually be released as an alternative to and not a replacement for the PHB ranger. So, it should come out as UA first and be available here once that happens, then the final version will be in a new book eventually. At that point, the UA version here will be removed and you'll need to buy the new book.

No. They won't be changing or adding anything like that to an existing book, beyond errata corrections. The new ranger, which is really the only thing being looked at along those lines, will be an alternate version and be published in a new book. I suppose it could happen, but it seems highly unlikely. If it does, I'm sure you'd get it here at no extra charge.
I think errata is what you mean by patches - fixing a mistake rather than fundamentally changing something. The sorts of things that WOTC includes on a downloadable PDF. DDB have updated these for free in the past. If it was more like a 2nd edition of the Players Handbook, after the riots had subsided, you'd probably have to pay for that.
Looking at my PotA compendium the shocking answer is no...None of the changes listed for the 5th edition onward are changed in the compendium... That's really bad.

I thought WOTC indicated that any revisions to the ranger would be made available for free.
What is not changed? I just looked up a few of the changes in the errata you posted and they are all reflected in the compendium.
The spell listings at the end. I know when using the toolset of D&D Beyond that doesn't matter, but if someone is just using this site as a digital book then they're getting screwed there a bit.

False statement. We updated all the Errata. If one is missing, report it and we will make sure it will get updated.
I can verify that certain spots were missed. The biggest one is the Dessarin Valley map. The one on DDB still shows 10 mile hexes, but the errata changed the hexes to 4 miles and swapped a few locations so they matched the text descriptions. Luckily I had already purchased the high-res corrected map from Mike Schley's webpage before DDB went live, but it's still kind of inconvenient to have to switch over to it.

Yes, the map, unfortunately, does not depend on us but thank you for reminding me.

I must have mis-remembered what I heard. You are correct. I'd guess it would just be added to DDB as additional options somehow. We'll see eventually, I guess.

Filcat, I can confirm that at least Abi-Dalzim's horrid Writing, Transmute Rock, Vitrolic Sphere, and Watery Sphere do not match the errata, nor do they match the spell listings page. Not sure abut the other spells as I did not look them all up.
