the price of a hardcover book is because it costs more to make and is, no matter the use, more durable than paperback. i also haven't got much of a chance to use it yet, and don't get to play this game as often as id like in normal times anyways. i don't have $30 to waste on a digital copy of a [borderline] mint condition book i already have
If all you want is a digital copy of the book, that's only $20 (the compendium only option). That said, if the service here isn't worth the cost to you, you have every right to choose not to purchase the content here.

Unless you are actually working for Wizards and/or Beyond and have access to that kind of financial information, please do not make statements about cost of running a business as if you know it to be true, because there is a decent chance that it is not true. It greatly annoys me when people make unsubstantiated claims with no little to no financial knowledge nor evidence, and just assumes that digital services costs less to run and provide. This might be true for some industries and companies, but I highly doubt this is universally true.
Hosting information online and running a website are not free, not to mention all the digital tools, data integration, and sheer convenience.
Unlike physical books, Beyond's digital app can actually last forever, even with repeated use, by simply copying and transferring it from one device to another. On the computer, you can use an Android emulator to use Beyond's app. A book does not last forever, and it degrades with each use.
Why anyone would waste $30 on a temporary physical copy instead of the app is beyond me, when the app can be easily past down from generation to generation even if Beyond goes defunct. This is sarcasm.

that is literally just a fact about how books are made....... this is hilarious. you're trying to argue a fact with me??? no thanks buddy
EDIT: looking at this again im even more angry. i was explaining why a physical copy of a hardcover book is [or at least should be] more expensive than a digital copy. yes, even with dndbeyond's hard to navigate system attached to it. you took "this is literally factually more expensive than a paperback or digital copy of a book" and tried to act like i said "dNdBeYoNd ShOuLd GiVe Me It FoR fReE" which i don't think nor did i even barely imply. nice strawman honey
EDIT #2: your previous post heavily suggests you are somehow affiliated with or, god forbid, work at dndbeyond, in which case this is extremely unprofessional behavior and seriously makes me want to talk to a superior. if im mistaken, please ignore this

You are not stating facts. If you think your fact is true, then prove it with evidence. What you will need to prove it are Hasbro's and Fandom's internal financial reports/statements. Reports and statements from companies that are similar in size and scope will also do.
I am a bookkeeper, so I know when people are pulling obvious bullcrap out their behinds about the cost of running a business. Never assume something is cheap/expensive just because you think it is. There are a lot of hidden and/or unknown costs involved, so unless you are privy to that financial information, it is not a good idea to assume. This applies to a lot of other professions and life as well: do not assume and act like something is true unless you actually know.
first off, id like for you to respond to the edits i made to my post because they are important and that last edit needs an answer right away. if you are affiliated with dndbeyond i will be taking this to a superior of yours.
secondly, if you are really going to tell me that it costs more to make a paperback than it does a hardback, i am going to laugh at you until hell freezes over. one is literally just made of paper, one is paper AND - in the case of dnd books - usually a VERY fancy cover including expensive printing, laminated or at least treated pages, exclusive artwork inside and outside the book. dnd books are also significantly bigger and thicker than most regular books... do i need to go on or are you really gonna cry that i get some proof i literally can't get my hands on???
third, i don't care what profession you are - or, more accurately, SAY you are online. how much does it cost to order hardcovers? significantly more than paperbacks?? thats how it was when I worked in my local library. but im sure you're somehow gonna claim theyre actually cheaper to order.
EDIT: the mobile dndbeyond forums do not like my phone...

Let me clear this up. Anyone who works for DDB will have an orange (forum mod) or red (DDB staff) name.
Those of us with blue names are regular users like you. Though some of us have been around the forums long enough to have heard common questions multiple times and know how the mods and staff answer them, as well as having a general sense as to how they operate. But make no mistake, we are not affiliated with them and our knowledge is only that of frequent observers.

No. XXXGammaRay never stated that, but merely used common sense.
XXXGammaRay was comparing digital to hardcover, because there are no paperback 5e books.
How do we know you aren't just saying you worked in your local library?
im talking about their previous post before these, in a separate thread.
i wasn't responding to him when i originally said that, you clearly haven't actually read my posts here and therefore i don't give an aboleth's buttocks what you have to say <3 good day

I have. I'm talking about what XXXGR posted.

Are we still debating this topic 4 years after the pricing announcement?
If you don't want to buy it, don't. If you want to buy it, buy it.
I don't think the business model is changing here anytime soon. Just my 2¢.
The poor horse has already died twice over and y’all still just whackin’ at it with sticks. That poor, poor quadruped. At this point it’s kinder to let the glue makers have the remains.

From what your statement was implying, at least to me, was that digital books should not cost $30 because they are not as expensive to produce or maintain. I do not know how much it costs to build and maintain Beyond's products, but it is definitely more than you seem to think.
I am not affiliated with Beyond, but I find it unprofessional to just assume physical books should cost more than Beyond's books without having evidence to point either way. In Beyond's case, what they are offering are far than just digital books. They are offering digital tools and integration between those tools and books.
I've purchased the manuals as hard copies as I prefer the book. However I want to sign up for D&D Beyond and create some characters for some campaigns I'm playing in. Would I have access to all of the character builds once I sign up. I know it was an issue before but now it's one company is it necessary to buy both.

It is still the case that purchasing the physical books does not give you access to them here. There are now some limited exceptions...it is, in some cases, possible to buy a "physical and digital bundle" of some (but not all) books direct from WOTC. Those options can be found here: https://dndstore.wizards.com/us.
However, since you already have the physical books, your options for using that material here on DDB remains the same:
