Since D&D beyond came out and Begin working with Wotc i have been waiting for the moment they included certain sourcebooks with subscription purchases. I have personally put off purchasing a subscription for the mere fact of feeling that theres no value if i don't have access to sourcebooks for character gen. Recognizing I have full access to reference all sourcbooks without a subscription. I have purchased all hard copies and feel purchasing them ...again at full price disheartening. Some of the digital sourcebooks are marked up $5 more than the hard copy cover price.
I like the D&D Beyond product and its aplication. Its become essential for me and my tribe in gaming during times like these where pen and paper tabletop isnt safe. i guess i just question it's fairness with purchases and value of these purchases while understanding that D&D Beyond is not WotC and is its own business. Maybe add discounts for previously bought books, bundles that just inlude feats, background or spell access for character gen?
Well, its usually not full price. MSRP for Xanathar's is $49.95. Its $29.99 on Beyond. Sure, Amazon sells the hardcover for $28.99, but they have economies of scale that a local store does not have access to.
Fairly often there are sales via coupon codes, you can check this thread for which ones may be active.
There is are significant costs to digitizing the books, including getting all of the markup correct so that tooltips are on applicable spells, items, etc. Plus server costs and probably a royalty to Wizards for each sale.
For any of content, you are welcome to recreate them as private homebrew. Or you can just buy them piecemeal as you need them (remember that if you buy a feat, that $1.99 counts towards the cost of buying the whole book).
As far as subscriptions go, there is some value there. Hero tier removes ads, which is nice, and grants unlimited character slots. The master tier lets your group share all of their resources with each other, so a book should only need bought once.
I really appreciate your feedback and like you, my best friend has instilled a very similar and compelling reasoning that has put my heart at ease. I didn't fully understand.
Again Thank you!
