Was browsing DnD Beyond the other day and saw this ad on the website. I am not easily offended, but this is stuff I would expect on some shady illegal websites, not something supposedly working with agreements with Hasbro and Amazon. Can we take the porno anime slave breast expansion fetish ads off of the ad network?
I'm pretty sure the ads are using Google ads, so would have targeted search - so they are customized based on the user searching (since I was getting ads to order Nespresso Coffee pods after I had just gone and re-ordered).
Feel free to just say nyah nyah and do nothing, but other ads seemed inappropriate when looking at that page "helm of telepathy" while in incognito mode. If Google has the words on that page tied to word fetishes, that's a problem.
I think you misunderstand. Those ads are targeted ads. They take your Google search history, and give you ads based off it. That's why I've got ads for dice (last thing I searched for) and sorce has coffee.

No, Google pulls YOUR individual cookies and targets ads to you off such. If you search for naughty things, naughty things will be targeted to you.
D&D Beyond has NO affiliation with the content of these ads and what your cookies offer you.
and unchecking that checkbox reading, "Also use Google Account activity and information to personalize ads on these websites and apps and store that data in your Google Account"
By including additional activity, Google will:
Include your browsing data from websites and apps that partner with Google, including those that show ads from Google, in your Google Account
Store that data with other data in your Google Account based on your Activity Controls preferences
Use Google Account activity to make ads across the web more relevant for you, improve the relevance of ads on those websites and apps, and improve Google services
This setting applies across all of your signed-in devices and across all Google services.
My point in general is, many sites use Google ads, if I have only seen this here there is an issue. If your answer is: "haha you are a pervert" then by all means, stick to your guns. But I am willing to bet there is an option to restrict the Google ads which can appear, it's just you might get 1/1000 of a cent less per page view so that's not ideal.
Um, I keep getting Ads for this and I don't even like cream filling... Please explain!

I just spent about 10 minutes clicking around various magic items in an incognito mode window, frequently going back to the helm of telepathy, hoping to see the ads that Thain was encountering...
I didn't manage to see a single ad for anything.
I noticed that Thain was on mobile when encountering the ad that gave pause, so I then started checking out what ads would show up on my phone.
What I found with about 30 refreshing of the helm of telepathy page was ads for:
A local ad campaign about education
Ads suggesting I can make money with psychic skills

Yeah I noticed on PC, only ads about twitch and stuff, on mobile psychic hotline weird ads. All in incognito mode.

That's not entirely true. I use private browsing and clean cookies constantly and don't browse ****, at all (in fact, pretty much only D&D Beyond and news sites like Reuters and AP News), and yet I've gotten those ads on sites like SageAdvice.eu.

Sort of. The algorithm is making a connection between table top gaming and anime dating sims, I think. And that's... not unreasonable - let's say. So it may be a default or preferred ad for table top gaming or any kind of gaming sites, especially if one is in incognito mode. I'll bet this is an ad for a mobile game too, if he was on his phone. Yes?
Just to tell people... Anonymous internet doesnt exist. Incognito mode still sends your browser and ip info to the website which then gets sent to the headquarter of internet in europe. So basically.... There is never any incognito mode. Everything off the internet is recorded by the hq of it.

To the OP: If your browsing habits can identify you as male, in a certain age group (young-ish) and a gamer (including tabletop) and perhaps a watcher of anime, you can get those ads anywhere, particularly on gaming-related sites. It seems kind of random, and probably also depends on if the group putting out those ads has paid for a new wave of them recently.
Even if you're browsing on a fresh computer and/or in incognito mode, if you visit "gaming" sites (including tabletop games in my experience as I said) you'll eventually come across one of those shady-looking ads. It's kind of like those eye-rollingly "racy" Evony ads that used to pop up all the time when you were browsing gaming news and in particular, smaller specialty sites that had guides and build advice, etc. that couldn't afford to be choosy about where they got their ad revenue.
That said, I'd rather have stuff like that over some of the stuff from Taboola and in particular Revcontent. Also, at least it's (probably) not a scam. I would complain to Google first if anything, and DnD Beyond second.
Edit: Let me add that when those racy Evony ads were going around, everyone got them by the way. My sister would complain about them (and she is as far from the target demographic of that game as you could get), and I'd find them on my mom's computer when I had to go help her fix an issue with it. So it's entirely possible that you can get ads like that completely at random too.

Yeah... I get ads for dice. Because that's what I've searched for. Me thinks someone needs to learn how to use Incognito Mode.
A dwarf with a canoe on his back? What could go wrong?

So, yes the content of the website has an effect. Open helm of telepathy a few times in incognito and it will offer tarot cards and such.
I would highly suggest visiting https://adssettings.google.com/authenticated

There is simple fix. The subscriptions are a fantastic way to get rid of ads.
