When creating a custom item while viewing a character sheet, there's no option to create a custom weapon; it only makes a miscellaneous item. In addition, when customizing a weapon, there's no way to modify the damage type it does.
In a game I played in person (using DDB's character sheet), I asked if my barbarian could start with a d12 30-pound great hammer instead of a greataxe, to which I was allowed. 5e currently doesn't have any d12 bludgeoning weapons.

Save the modifier, then change the description and name of the item and save the whole magic item.
