Considering this thread has been going since 2017 and is still open I would like to add my support for paid character slots.
As an individual who is not currently in a group (and would be a player if so) the subscriptions do not suit my needs. I am mostly interested in the character creator and the lack of character slots is a huge reason I haven't invested in D&D Beyond yet. I would love the option to buy additional character slots the same way we can buy races, classes, etc; individually or as a bundle.
From what I've read in this thread I'm not the only one who mostly wants D& D Beyond for the character creator. Yes there are other creators/apps -and I currently use one- but D&D Beyond's is the most supported being official (which can't be debated now since WOTC bought them). After many years I was ready to start investing in the platform (I was one of those who had a couple physical books so wasn't sure if it was financially sound for me) but seeing as the character slot situation hasn't changed I'm once again questioning pulling the trigger.
I saw some concerns regarding the cost to D&D Beyond paying to keep more characters on the server. But I also saw some ideas on how to alleviate that. So I would just ask that WOTC/D&D Beyond please consider these requests. The unlimited character slots in the subscriptions can still exist, but it can't really be anything but positive to offer players more options (for a reasonable price).
PS: I do appreciate the six character slots we get for free; I actually think it's pretty generous. So I definitely want to thank D&D Beyond for that.
It's nice to see this has been discussed for a few years. However that seems to say this feature will never come unless WOTC thinks otherwise when they transition to D&D One &/or revamp Beyond.
You could always get the Hero tier subscription for $2.99 per month and get an UNLIMITED amount of character slots. They offer a discount if you pay for half a year or a year:
I did not enter my zip code to display the taxes that would apply in the above screenshot.

The Hero Tier is crazy cheap for a subscription service, I'll give them that. But it makes me cringe paying for things I don't need; or possibly wasting money if I don't use the tools enough to make it worth it (a risk you weigh with any subscription service). In some cases subscriptions are easier to swallow, but with the character slots I'd rather pay and "own" them, not be dependent on renting them every month (yes I know we don't really own anything on the internet unless we have actual ownership rights but y'all know what I mean).
Incidentally Mairondil, I saw your post on page 3 where you answered someone's question regarding what happens if you end your sub with more than 6 character slots. Thanks for the info; It sounds like they give you enough time to export characters. However it's another con to subbing for me; especially if I'm playing around with leveling. Don't get me wrong; the sub options are great for the right people; I would just like to see other options.
I guess though overall we will have to wait and see if anything changes with One D&D now in the picture.
I would add my support for more slots...but I suppose they are doing it on purpose. :-)
lol I mean, I get needing a revenue stream for site upkeep. Reading through this thread most people also get that, but just want other ways of obtaining slots. One idea was to include a few slots with each digital book purchase; I like that idea :)
Adding yet another voice to individually purchase-able additional character slots.
I DO NOT WANT a subscription - I've already invested in mutliple upgrades, I have ZERO interest in paying an additional amount each and every month just to be able to have a couple of extra character slots, that's just not good value nor does it make sense given the business model of the rest of the site..

I also would gladly pay $1/character slot or so.
