In the DMG pg. 263, there are optional rules for proficiency die instead of a proficiency bonus:
I don't think there is currently a way to do this, even with the character sheet revamp because you cannot edit the Proficiency Bonus. If that was made available to homebrew, we could replace it with 1d4 or whichever fits.
Currently, we can edit the skills, taking the proficiency bonus away. We would just have to keep up with when do include the proficiency die.
I read in another post that this might be in the roadmap for the future. Has anyone heard anything on this?
What you could do in the meantime is look at your proficiency bonus, double that number, and roll that number-sided die.
Figuring out which die to use isn't the issue, since they've got the table right in front of them.
Right now, proficiency bonus is included in all fields that use proficiency (attack modifiers, skill modifiers, and saving throws). If you're using proficiency dice in the game, you don't wan't your proficiency bonus added in to these fields! A thief proficient in Stealth would be making a Dexterity check and rolling their proficiency die, adding their Dexterity modifier. If there was an option in the character sheet to use proficiency dice, then the your Stealth modifier would show your Dexterity modifier as is, regardless of your proficiency.
Right, that's what I'm wanting. I know how to make it work, I'm just saying it would be easier if there was a way to override the proficiency bonus or change it to proficiency die. That way the stealth check would say 1d4+3 or something to that effect.
i beleive you would be rolling 1D20+proficiency die+ modifier. i think this is a great feature for lower levels, but as you get past the D6, things get a little dicey, if you'll pardon the pun. it's a great mechanic that makes the game a lot more versatile, but after a certain point it'll just slow the game down. not to mention, any level 17+ character is gonna have a D12... this sounds fun, but the maths is a nightmare, plus they don't actually need any further bonuses to their rolls beyond their standard plus 6 (especially the martial classes, even if they rolled a 1 or 2, theyd probably still be hitting the monsters easily coz of the D20). i would reccomend putting this feature in for players levels 1 through 8, but anything beyond that it's a bit of a mess.

Make sense?
