What happens if i pay for one month of unlimited char slots theu the subscription? Make like 16 chars, then cancel the subscription? Are those 10 chars locked? Are they deleted? Or did i find a loophole?
I had my subscription interrupted while my card was lost. The amount of slots you have are locked and you cannot create more. I was at "46/46" instead of "46/unlimited". When I deleted a character it went to "45/45" So no, you did not find a loop hole. Unless you pay for one month, create like 100 characters and then unsubscribe, you will essentially have reserved 100 slots.
Thats not a bad option... if you can edit the 100 slots.
You should still be able to edit the 100 slots, I'm not 100% sure, but why wouldn't you, so I'm 95% sure you can. Just make sure never to delete them. Currently, there's no way to rearrange your characters, so keep that in mind too, in case you wanted to group them in certain ways, but I do believe that's on the roadmap.
Honestly they should have character slots linked to sourcebooks... You buy the PHB it also include 3 extra slots. But Xanthars, here's another 3 slots, now you're up to 12 slots to experiment with
I for one realy would like to add a few slot with out the subing it. I also like the idea of bounes slot per book you have. Something like 2 extra slot for each book would mean if you have the Players you are now up to 8 slot but if you have 3 book you are now up to 12 slot on your account.
Books are very expensive when you've already purchased physical copies its hard to justify buying them yet again. I almost did it today but then there's a subscription fee on top of that to actually use them? One-time fee or subscription fee you don't get both!

You don’t need the subscriptions to use the sources(books) you purchase here. Subscriptions add other benefits. The Hero Tier removes adds, allows unlimited characters, and allows one to subscribe to other peoples published homebrew. The Master Tier includes all of that and the ability to share content with others in your campaigns. I used DDB without a sub for quite a while. My kids still do.
I've had the Master Tier sub since May this year, and I'll tell you the 16 players across various campaigns that I play in or GM for having access to everything I own is great. The barrier to entry for newer players especially is awesome. Because of how easy things are I don't mind kicking DnDbeyond a few bucks a month as a sub for that. The one time purchase for the books themselves also don't feel like a big deal to me in combination with the sub, since as ArwensDaughter mentioned, you don't need a sub to have full access to everything you purchased regarding the sourcebooks.
If you're actually playing more than 6 characters at a time, then a subscription is probably the right move for you. If you just want to have extra slots to mess around with options or concepts, that's not DDB's issue. More slots equals more server space required equals more money. Nothing is stopping you from creating a character in a slot, exporting the character sheet as a PDF, then reusing that slot to create another character concept.

I'm a master tier subscriber and own all the books (as a legendary bundle)
In the beginning I got the Players Handbook and DMG with a Master Subscription because I was running a DnD5th game. I shared content with the players and slowly bought pieces as players wanted and converted into books as their were coupons. Over the course of a year and a half or so I bought enough that with a legendary bundle coupon it was a handleable expense. The way you can buy just the pieces you need is incredibly fair for those on a limited budget and how it reduces the cost of the total.
Honestly I strongly recommend getting players handbook and DMG (probably about $40 for both) then buy pieces from there if you have the budget since so much is in Players Handbook and DMG. The master tier means you can help new players get their start and give them everything they need to create characters easily. I've found the master tier easily worth it.
The buying slots model means that after one month they are losing money on you if you only buy one slot The subscription model is popular because the costs of supporting you having that slot are ongoing so a subscription allows them to be able to budget for continuing revenue stream instead of a continuing loss stream.
I mean, you're not wrong Mehrkat, but I think you can do either model.
There are continually products that come out (sourcebooks, etc.) to make revenue off of. Additionally, the more customers the more sales (generally). So, for instance, if I find an "Insignia of Claws" at a game I might want to buy it digitally for my character etc.
They could also offer more micro-transactions to supplement. E.g. Character avatars, character sheet backgrounds etc. Start selling "Character Appearance" for page 3 ( I think this is a really good idea btw. I just came up with it).
I just saw if you preorder Theros you get custom backgrounds. Preorders move revenue forward a quarter. I don't know if they really entice more customers to buy a product. Maybe they should sell those backgrounds for $1.00 apiece instead?
Additionally they would see a bump in revenue from new customers. For instance, I recently deleted a character rather than subscribing. So they didn't capture ANY revenue from that.
I like the micro-transaction for customization model more.Let the base model remain free, or nearly free and functional.
Of course that is simply MY preference and the world doesn't revolve around me.
I appreciate the product regardless.

If I recall right they are locked. I'm not sure if you can choose to unlock them by locking another character though.

It would be nice if the books had a product code to redeem.

Thanks Captain Obvious^
You are so welcome!
What if i subscribe for a month. Create 100 characters. Then cancel my subscription. Would i have 100 editable slots to play with?
Based on what this person says it appears so.

Bit of a Necro here but it came up in the Googs search.
+1 for getting a character slot per book or being able to pay for character slots.
I know companies love subscription based models, but there is something psychological about paying just once.
They could even sell:
1 slot for $5
5 for $20 etc.
I think many people who wouldn't do a subscription would shell out $5 for another slot.
The buying slots model means that after one month they are losing money on you if you only buy one slot The subscription model is popular because the costs of supporting you having that slot are ongoing so a subscription allows them to be able to budget for continuing revenue stream instead of a continuing loss stream.
