So in case the giant blue banner ribbon across the top of every single DDB page isn't alerting you, DDB finally got permission to put Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse up for pre-order. Landing May 17th, with all the junk we all knew was going to be in M3 since months ago.
Left unanswered? What the hell happens to everyone's currently existing versions of various monsters and species and whether this book is being treated as a collection of opt-in reduxes or as a back-hack errata correction, a'la Volo's Guide to DM Headaches getting futzed with twelve times a year because it's a terrible bloody book and it should feel terrible.
Anyone else on board with maybe not buying M3, especially preorder sales, without knowing how Wizards/DDB plans to handle that? because I've seen at least a dozen threads on it and it's an absolutely valid question, wherever one happens to sit on the ongoing forum "debate" over Wizards' new design direction for 5e.
Yeah, nah. No wallet cookies for you until you give us some actual details here, DDB. Not cool. "HEY YOU SHOULD BUY THIS" should not have been the first thing you told us about the whole M3 situation.
This. I already own all the books that contain these playable races and these monsters. What value is being added by this new book? Are you not going to update the statblocks if I don't buy? Is there a good, proactive reason to buy?
I am not sure if I will preorder for financial reasons in the short term. Maybe later. With a May release date I should have plenty of time to take in and evaluate all the options included.
Otherwise I am excited to work with the new character options and don't feel too badly about the old ones going away. If a player of mine really wanted to use the old rules I wouldn't mind too badly.
If anything I am a little disappointed they didn't finish the work and do the PHB races at the same time. From what I have seen of the eladrin and duergar, dwarves/gnomes/elves rules could be inferred pretty easily.
I agree with this. I get the M3 is up for pre-order, but I have absolutely no idea what it gives, and whether the changes will be forced for my previous races or not if I buy the book, or if it will be errata’d in if I don’t. Given that it’s a major selling point of the book, I doubt the latter though. But I’m not sure. I just think we need more info about how this is going to work on DnDBeyond.
This is silly if we own all of the books that contains everything in the new book we should be receiving this for no charge. Are they really going to have two versions of each monster in DDB, one for the old books and one for the new book?
They were never going to do the PHB species; that's work for the 2024 redux. Frankly, M3 here serves two roles:
-It's a replacement for Volo's Guide to DM Headaches, which is the most contentious and oft-errata'd book in the entire 5e lexicon by a significant margin. M3 means they no longer have to bother printing Volo's, because it reprints everything in Volo's and a bunch more stuff, and thus people will stop scourging them over all the problematical crap in Volo's Guide.
-It renders the maximum number of non-PHB species Tasha-compliant, updating them to Wizards' new design directive without them having to errata and futz with half their crap. They can simply point to M3 and say "use these versions" and soft-obsolete the older stat blocks.
Plus, of course, they can sell a big shiny new book. Twice, even, since they're holding initial sales of M3 hostage in their bundle with extra copioes of Xanathar's Guide and Tasha's Cauldron that nobody really wants or needs. Really, this whole situation has been kinda crappy from the start, nothing about it has painted Wizards in a particularly fetching light.
The problem is that DDB is caught between a rock and a hard place, because their standing policy is "all content is automatically updated to the latest version" per their license with Wizards. But M3 is nothing but reprints, there's factually zero reason to buy it if you already own the other books its stuff comes in, especially if DDB updates everyone's content to match the new book anyways.
People have asked DDB roughly four hundred thousand times how they intend to handle the whole M3 Issue, and DDB's answer has been - and continues to be - deafening silence. I don't particularly feel like rewarding deafening silence with wallet cookies, so this thread is me saying they can give me answers or they can keep their damn digibook.

Well, that would be awkward if we get all the updates by default before/without buying the new book.
Put it this way: I sure as shit ain't buying M3 without knowing before I pull the trigger whether or not I already own virtually the entirety of its content. And I strongly recommend others follow suit.

I don’t think it would be awkward at all, it would be called “doing the right thing”.
I’ve noticed that, aside from sporadic moderator/dev posts, DDB tends to have 3 standard ways of communicating information to users:
Exaggeratedly positive spin. (Have you noticed how “ra ra” they get over inconsequential things or underdeveloped features? Like now.)
Circular platitudes. (Have you noticed how, in many of their statements they say lots but don’t actually tell us anything? Like now.)
Not at all. (Have you noticed how, whenever they don’t want to discuss something they simply pretend not to notice all the questions about that topic? Like now.)
Whenever they have actually come right out and stated anything plainly and directly the comunity has always appreciated it and defended them against detractors. But for whatever reason that still isn’t their go-to. They still obfuscate, omit, or ignore. Here we are again, more obfuscation, omissions, & ignorance. Why? Why not just be forthright about things? I just don’t get it.
Well, we will know more next Tuesday right? When the set hits the market, will DnDBeyond update then or will they have to wait till May? Waiting that long after the book is in the world seem odd, but seems plausible at this point.

The big question is will they update or will they have two versions?

That is what I mean. The set hits the streets next week. Does DnDBeyond have to wait till May to make changes IF they are doing an update? OR will we see the changes to the information we already have next week? This whole thing is a cluster F(#k at the moment.
Here's my beef: why are they taking people's money now, if they're only going to let us know what they're doing with M3 next Tuesday? DDB content is non-refundable, you can't get your money back if it turns out you bought something you already own. It's disingenuous and scummy, and I'm not about to stand silently by and let it happen if I can help it.
DDB has no worthwhile excuse not to tell us this crap. None. Even if their excuse is "Wizards told us we can't", that's not a worthwhile excuse. We're doing business here, with DDB. If they don't have the spine to stand up for their customer base and tell Wizards to sod off, inform them that DDB is required to give their customers straight answers on contentious issues like this? Why the hell are we even here? Why did anybody bother with the separate service at all?

Surely they’ll resolve the fluster cluck and explain everything to us in the next regularly scheduled Dev update.

The book by itself is now on the WotC website.

Yep not touching it till I know what's going on with existing content.
Then again after the last few books I wasn't planning to pre-order anyway....
