Starting on May 16, you can acquire the streamlined and up-to-date creatures and character race options, as well as a plethora of exciting new content, by purchasing Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse. On May 17, Volo’s Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes will be discontinued from our digital marketplace.
I'm kind of shocked this isn't an announcement on the forums themselves, but rather just on the support sides which doesn't get nearly the traffic.
It's not a big deal. We won't be able to buy them after that date, but those of us who bought them will still have access to them. Somehow I suspect that we also won't be able to buy them in stores much longer.

I doubt Wizards are going to make any effort to remove them from stores or the distribution chain, but I expect there won't be any new printings of either book (and may not have been for a while), so they'll naturally disappear with time.
Some people consider it a big deal because of the lore within the books that won't be in the new book. That being said, they should totally make it known to people on the main site instead of just on the support site.
I already own the content though so its not really relevant to me this time.
I guess no one is actually losing anything per se, they're worried that it will create a storm in a teacup.
On the other hand, it might cause a surge of sales as people panic buy them. Pros and cons, I guess.

The new(ish) Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse effectively combines and redoes both VGtM and MToF. There is stuff left out, but the crunch is still there - albeit altered to more compatible with the more recent vision of 5e.
Evidently, WotC are viewing it as a replacement for the two books and are stopping them. If you have access to them already, you're fine, but they won't be selling them anymore.

As someone who is out of the loop, what is the issue with Volo's?
The fluff is done exclusively for the Forgotten Realms and doesn't fit any other settings. The stats for many of the playable races in the book were also considered to be inferior compared to races from the Player's Handbook or other sources, resulting in many of them getting rules patches to improve them.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

Also, it's not really DDB's job to announce this. Wizards is the one who is in charge of "delisting" the books after all.

Kind of. I'm a customer of DDB, not WotC. While DDB doesn't deserve the blame (if there is any), it's their responsibility to make sure I'm aware of what they selling, etc. If someone has to tell us that we can't get a book from D&D anymore (and I'm not saying there is a responsibility, I'm just hypothesising here), then it's DDB. Of they want tonpass the buck and say "WotC has decided...", then that's fair, but the communication needs to come from the vendor, not really the supplier.

True, DDB should probably have announced it more clearly, but the blame doesn't fall primarily on their heels.

IIRC they did try to announce that MToF and Volo's were going to disappear from a marketplace in a Dev Update many people on this forum witnessed, but that Dev Update was never made available after it's livestream ... which was weird. I think this is discussed in the various older threads on the status of Volo's and MToF with the pending arrival of MMM.
I dunno, they just had a sale and if folks new two books were set to be retired, might have got some sales they wouldn't have otherwise, sorta like the dice clearance sale not too long ago.
Anyone know if Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds are delisting their editions?

Sure it does. They're owned by Wizards now.
Wizards does not officially own them yet. The transaction is not complete and will not be for another (as of this post) 5 days.

Apart from timing, they'll still be separate to my understanding. The only difference is that WotC will be taking their profits and controlling a lot more - or at least, have the option to. If anything, the purchase will put more blame on WotC since they'll be the puppetmasters.

This was announced back in January. Or maybe December. Can't remember when, exactly, but it was before the box set was released.
