I created a magic item for a campaign I'm playing in. However, it doesn't show up in a search (either by item name or by author name), and the link gives a 404 when the DM tries to use it.
I don't see anything in the settings on its page to change permissions or make it visible or anything like that.
Are you searching in a character sheet or on the homebrew pages or both? The below is for looking in character sheets, rather than the homebrew listings:
Make sure the character sheet where you're trying to look up the homebrew item has homebrew turned on in the character sheet preferences.
Is the item a weapon or armor etc that requires proficiency? Make sure either that requirement is unchecked while searching or that the character has the required proficiency.
Is the item published? It doesn't need to be to be used within a campaign, and probably shouldn't be without testing. Homebrew doesn't need to be published to be shared in a campaign, but it does need to be in your collection, and you and the character performing lookup need to be in the same campaign.
The DM and I are already in the same DDB campaign. But how do I publish the homebrew item?
Unless you are absolutely and completely sure you know what you are doing, I do NOT recommend publishing any homebrew. You do not need to publish homebrew to share them if you are in the same campaign with the other person.
Once homebrew is published, you can NOT edit it. The only way to "edit" something is to publish a new version, but the old version will always be out there, and it will clog your drop down menus up with old versions.
This is not as relevant for most people, but if you plan to monetize your homebrew in the future, it is probably best not to publish your stuff on any third party platform.
You don’t need to publish homebrew but if you want other people who you aren’t in a campaign with to be able to use it you can publish it. It will always be there but the old versions only stay at the very bottom of the details page for the homebrew, it doesn’t really clog up your collections menu

I've added it to my character sheet, but the DM can't see the item in the database. I also cannot find the item in the homebrew database; I can only see it with the direct URL (for reference: https://www.dndbeyond.com/homebrew/creations/magic-items/5143102-glaive-of-zhang-bonus-attack ).
The character has homebrew turned on; I have other homebrew items which the DM created.
The character has proficiency, but I the requirement is unchecked regardless.
I don't see any boxes to publish an item or not publish an item, nor is there any indication of how I would do so.
The database is only for published homebrews, not private ones. And you need to send your DM the link while you are in a DDB campaign with each other.
