And the worst possible time to stab 3rd parties creators that have built your fan base in the back. Yet they did.
Worst time to enrage your face base that supports those same creators. Yet they did.
Wotc could right now be bringing in people by the thousands Yet instead people are canceling subs fast and putting them in damage control mode and what did they give us. Silence not an immediate clarification because they new they where caught with there hand in the jar.
They're not real fans.
They're only concerned because of a realization that they may no longer generate money in abundance from D&D instead of enjoying the game for what it is... just a game to play and enjoy.
This is not your grandfather's Dungeons & Dragons.
Sorry but you don't get to define what someone is a fan of and how they chose to be a fan. Someone's decision not to bow to corporate greed doesn't make them not a fan of the game. You are extreamly wrong.
I kinda want to threaten to not see it and see if that does anything and then see it anyway because I actually want to encourage them to make more movies like this.
Ultimately it's an evolving situation. If we get to the point where WotC allows OGL1.0a to persist for previous versions of the game and has a new licensing agreement for 6e before the movie comes out then I'll be seeing it. If the negotiations are still being dragged out and they haven't provided guarantees that the new OGL won't have a "we can change the terms any time we like" clause then I won't be able to see it in good conscience. But there's a lot of space between those two possibilities and I'm not sure where the line is going to end up.

The movie has nothing to do with the OGL. The turnout for the movie has literally no effect on the OGL situation.
Looks like every trash movie being made for Netflix. The only way the lead can look the way he does is if he is the butt of every joke.
No thanks...wayyy too many agenda politics in my D&D anymore. I'll play the older systems and remember how great the game used to be. All good things come to an end.
What "agenda politics" are you referring to exactly?
I thought the "modern comic book movie" feel of the trailer and the corny music they put along with it was terrible so I never planned to see it in the first place. Now that Hasbro is making these terrible decisions for the future of our community, I am actively telling other people to boycott the movie.

Wizards of the Coast have made public their positions on a number of "culture war" issues.
It would really help if you were to actually explain what you mean.
I am lucky our local library has a new release machine. I just go online and scroll through the new releases and put a save on the ones I want and then I have 5 hours hold on it to go pick it up for free. I have not paid for a movie or tv series show in 2 decades. So if boycotting means seeing it at the movie theaters then yes.
I will however watch it when it becomes available at the library as it looks awesome!

And here I thought I was on my best behavior. BUT NO I got scolded and threatened with corner time. I guess we are not allowed to express our feelings or opinions on anything here. All hugs and kisses every body's special every one gets a ribbon that says 'Your a winner" Not here more then a week and I got naughty points twice. How many points do I get?

I make a point of not engaging with people who can't engage honestly.
You know exactly what I'm talking about.
Now excuse me as I look for that button that will allow me to mute or to block you.
No, I really have no idea what you're on about. Please don't threaten to block people because you don't want to elaborate.

Okay, but would you mind explaining how boycotting the movie will have even the slightest effect on the OGL?
I think the hypothetical behind talking about boycotting the movie is that the discussion gets picked up by news media. That would likely draw attention of the studio(s) involved and hasbro investors, who would tell the c-suite people to stop messing around and fix this mess they created.
If the movie doesn't do well at the box office or it looks like the target audience is going to pass on the film, the studio would likely shelf any future projects for the D&D IP.
At least that's the thinking as I understand it.
If anything, when investors feel dividends are threatened, they typically start talking about replacing the people running things.
Who knows, this is all conjecture based on the interwebz.
I'm not going to argue whether or not boycotting will have any effect on the OGL, or if it is morally sound given all the people worked on it presumably worked pretty hard. All I'm going to say is that I've wanted a new D&D movie for a while, I'm looking forward to seeing it, and I'm not going to let some corporate greed get in the way of me enjoying products that I enjoy. I don't typically buy things because I want to support a company, I buy things because they are good products that I want/need.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone, there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

They think that we are an obstacle to their money, I say let's make that thought a reality. At this point it's not even about the OGL any more, it's about sending a message. We will not stand for the gaslighting. We will not put up with the lies and the deceit. The time has come to take the fight to "The Dragon" and Paizo is rallying the troops. I know where I stand, where do you?

Sure thing ~ So, typically when a movie comes out, if more people go see it, it's considered more successful. If less people see it, it's considered less successful, and that's bad.
So if WotC and Hasbro were expecting a lot of people to go see the new D&D movie (and I do expect they are watching, since it's their IP and they should care about it's general popularity and success of the brand) and then not many people actually do, despite the fact that it was well reviewed and had a lot of buzz - they might go 'Hmmm, what happened? We were set up for so much success here, we even had Chris Pine in it!'
And the answer will be 'You got mega greedy and decided to slap the face of your most ardent fans right before releasing a movie, and in turn, they decided they didn't want to support you or your brand anymore and they didn't pay to see it.'
Now, if instead the movie is very successful because the mainstream audience who has no idea any of this OGL stuff is going on go see it, AND the D&D nerds like you who don't care about this OGL stuff go and see it, and the numbers are just fine - then there's a significantly less likely chance that WotC/Hasbro will ever have to ask themselves that question. Which means it's much less likely that they'll learn from their greedy mistakes.
Which means I hope you have deep pockets, because if they think they can get away with being THIS greedy, they'll do worse in the future.
It may be more effective to just not buy the movie merchandise toys they release. From what I've seen of them I probably wouldn't buy anyway. They look like happymeal toys

But seriously, the whole paladin-knight thing you've got going on is just cringe. Do whatever, I don't care. But don't expect the Hasbro executives to be thinking "oh the movie did poorly? I guess we gotta change the OGL"

(pink edit mine) Is it possible that executives will put 2 and 2 together that the movie's response is related to the OGL? Sure, absolutely, especially if you can get some major news coverage. Wont dismiss it as an impossible notion, especially seeing the progress made so far. At the same time, though, there's no guarantee that will happen since the movie and the OGL are part of two separate products made from their IP (one being a way to market to general audiences and the other being a legal document related to the TTRPG itself). Who knows, if the movie bombs badly enough, maybe they will see microtransactions on D&D Beyond as the only viable way to make more money off of D&D. But thats just speculation on my part.
The movie being a flop will not impact the OGL in any way. All the boycotting would achieve is we might never again get a D&D movie. Which is just a great disservice in my opinion. Cancel-Culture Warrior-Wannabes trying (even if unintentionally) to destroy the hobby, I'm not OK with. I mean, nothing I can do about it, but I just wanted to vent about the hypocrisy - since y'all are worse than Hasbro in my eyes.
