Well. Here we are. Never in a million years did I think the company would fold like an origami crane on this issue. The idea of putting the SRD into a Creative Commons license honestly never even occurred to me. Hyenas got the last laugh. Sucks to be me, I suppose.
Now. Let's see if y'all actually do what you said you would and denounce, decry, and unconditionally reject the slew of hateful content coming from hateful people over the next year or two, now that Wizards has tied their own hands and has absolutely no recourse whatsoever to contest D&D's association with that content. Personally I don't see it happening, and I'm really not looking forward to when someone inevitable decides to **** Around and Find Out. Kyle even said that We The Community are now D&D's only line of defense against hatefulness, discrimination, exclusionism, and bigotry. I worry for what that's going to mean in the future.
Not that any of this will matter in a year or two when One D&D drops and the latest SRD is released under OGL 1.3. But man. I'm honestly glad for the creatives, but trusting this community with policing itself? .....................................................................I suppose we'll have to see. And we doubtless will get the chance, real soon now.
I mean, 1.2 did allow products to associate more directly with D&D than what we currently have now, using things like the dragon ampersand.
That's similar to the d20 logo (which had additional restrictions on top of the OGL) from the early 00s. Nothing about the current license prevents them from offering something similar, though you'll have to pay a price for getting beyond the No Endorsement clause from CC (most likely resembling the various morals clauses people were busy screaming about).

Just wait. When someone making hate content under this gets onto the news cycle and people demand a response from WotC, they can and almost certainly will point out they’d talked about having moderating measures in place but the player community strongly resisted them, and then the same people will be howling about being thrown under the bus.

Or, they could point out that it's one of the risks of doing things "Open Source", and that they'll be taking all steps available to them to prevent the product from associating itself with DnD, preventing it from being carried in stores anywhere (by making sure everyone knows what it is), and watching like hawks for any other issues that may allow them to destroy that product in court.
As soon as this is in stone I'll be renewing my sub I can accept the editions going forward as having a new licence. I think its a terrible idea mind but as long as there upfront about it that's there prerogative and I can keep playing 5ed if I choose and 3rd parties can go where the players are if we end up in a 4th ed situation.
I'd rather trust the community than WotC - I may not always agree with the community as to what is offensive/hateful etc., but at least they won't be making decisions based on optics or profit.
This is a good result the only other thing I would have liked is an apology for the blatant lies.
This is truly great news. But it's too late, so much dissatisfaction with 'the brand' now and well PF2e has always been better, people have given it a try and they might not come back.
That’s an opinion, for me PF2E is terrible game design
They will, but probably on terms that we won't like! We'll just keep playing 5e in that case so they don't wanna make those terms too unfavourable or they won't sell new books or those sweet VTT micro-transactions.

Yeah, pretty much. Like, yay - Wizards doused the fire that was burning the house down. The house is still burnt though, and now there's a big honkin' hole in the wall that Uncle Willie Badtouch can use to wander in and do whatever he likes to make everything worse for everybody while the house's proprietor is handcuffed to the garage and can't do a damn thing about it.
Dead gods, I hope the R.I.O.T.ers were right. I don't think they are, but I really, really hope they weren't being delusional this time.
I'd like to resub to DnDBeyond - to show WotC I approve of this move - but we've just started a Pathfinder 2e campaign (Kingmaker), so I've no need for it :(

As I outlined earlier, this is likely going to be an absolute disaster. It will allow hate to fester and grow and it will be the cause of pain for millennia. We the community, with our actions, have protected hate and given bigots a perfect legal shield for years to come. In the time between 1.0 and 1.3, hateful people will almost certainly try to spread their horrible ideals and hurt much of the community in the process.
At a minimum, people should have been able to compromise and allow for a clause to stop hate. But no. Instead, there was panicking and anger and screaming instead of any actual consideration for others and the harm they might suffer. So some fans who are happy at this change may be enjoying themselves, but they should know and live with the fact that the refusal to logically come to the bargaining table will cause others great pain.

My prediction is that 6E or whatever they decide to call it will have its own restrictive license, which will in turn cause another 4E situation (in terms of licensing, yeah, this isn't the first time they tried to get rid of the OGL, just last time internet outrage was less of a thing). It will be an unpopular version of D&D, a sizeable portion of the audience will stick with 5E and we'll see a bunch of new TTRPG systems.
All of that already looks plausible and happening to some degree already.

This seems like a natural 20 - rolled from disadvantage.

That is some excellent news. Excited to keep playing 5E until something better steals me away.

As promised from the survey and when I unsubscribed. As of today I Resubscribed at the higher tier for a year. Speaking from the wallet.
Yeah, that covers SRD 5.1. What about SRD 6.0?

That is great to hear!
Um... we can wait until it comes out?

Somehow I doubt they will release another SRD

I’m happy they listened to the community. I don’t act in bad faith, WoTC did what we asked, so I’ve renewed my subscription.

Maybe I can resub when we complete Kingmaker :D
