My whole table Is now going Digital and I am having some trouble. I understand the whole of D&D beyond and I have books. The only problem is I don't have a laptop or a tablet... I would like any advice on what kind of laptops or tablets I could use for my d&d sessions. If you could could you also give me some advice on what kind of books are popular or have good info that I could use.
Can't give you advice on hardware but DNDBeyond is not terribly demanding, I use a middle of the road laptop that's a few years old and one of the other players is using an at least ten year old iPad.
In terms of books - As a Player you probably want Players Handbook, Xanathar's Guide to Everything and Tasha's cauldron of Everything. Those three books have most of the classes, subclasses and races.
If you are a DM you definitely want Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual in addition to start.
Right now at least some of the books mentioned are on sale
If you’re a player, you could just download the app and use it on your phone. As the above poster said, it’s really not demanding, basically you need something with a web browser, any old iPad/surface/whatever should do you well.
Books gets more complicated. If someone in your group has a master tier subscription, you can all share books, so if someone has them, you can use them freely. If not, the basic rules are free. But those only give you some races, and 1 subclass per main class (except the artificer, which isn’t included in the free rules.)
You can always stick with the basic rules, and buy individual races and subclasses as necessary. If you do buy a subclass, for example, the price of it is deducted from the cost of the book, if one day you decide to get the whole book.
Or, if you’ve got some money to spend, get the PHB, xanathar’s and Tasha’s, and for races, mordenkainen’s. Then if you have some others you’re interested in, pick them up individually or book by book.
I use either my iPhone 11 or my iPad 5 and just use Safari to access the website, I don’t even use the app (it sux). The best books for players are the PHB, Xanathar’s Guide, Tasha’s Cauldron, and Mordenkainen Presents. Pretty much everything else is either not really worth it or is for DMs.
