Took a look at the sales page, saw a couple of 15% drops but is anything in the sale actually 40% off?
I know they say "up to", which may be anything from 1% - 39%, I just expected the 40% off item to be more prominantly displayed - but I can't find it for looking.
Personally, I'm quite disappointed that no recent items are on the sale. Before WotC took over the site, sales covered everything in the store. Now it seems like very few items are actually getting marked down, most of them old stuff. I think the PHB, DMG, and MM are the only books that are actually 40% off.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Ah. That'll be why. I wasn't looking to purchase the PHB again! Oh well nevermind then. Guess I'll keep my money in that case.
I was kinda hoping it might apply to a new subscription. Cancelled my old one in protest at the OGL outrage, but 40% off is nothing to be sniffed at, although I couldn't see that it did that either.
It's not surprising that they're focusing on the core 3; those are almost certainly going to be Legacy-d within a year or so and off the market, so they're trying to squeeze in some extra sales while they can. And they do have some other decent offers; 25% off the new Tal'Dorei book is nothing to sneeze at.
Keep in mind we're coming up on the holiday season, and iirc they've done large scale sales during that time before. A flash sale is more meant to generate impulse buys on products that aren't having much turnover. Honestly I'll probably buy the MM and DMG this weekend to make sure I can maintain access to them. Was so disappointed they took down VGtM and MToF before I could buy them. Particularly given the dearth of lore in MotM.

It is madness to buy anything right now, unless you know that your table will continue to play 5e after 6e is released. Why buy a hard copy if you know it is good for only 1 more year of play, or a soft copy that will vanish when 6e comes out?

They won’t “vanish,” they’ll just get archived.
Does that mean that someone who has purchased something today will access to it 12 months from now. When the new PHB comes out (and/or the new DMG and MM), will a purchaser today have access to that product in Dec 2024?
Edit: Or more specifically, if a DM starts up a campaign in Dec 2024, and a player comes to them and says "I want to play a Battlemaster from the 2024 PHB", will that DM have access to the 2014 PHB?
We can't be absolutely certain since they haven't said anything, but pretty much everyone expects the new Big Three to be distinct products you have to buy again. They're meant to be significant overhauls, not just updates. And most likely if you don't already have access to the 2014 PHB when the 2024 one comes out, you won't be able to buy the book or any of the individual options from it. Going by what they've done so far, those books will be tagged "Legacy" and taken off the market here.

Also, this isn't really going to be a 6e; they've made backwards compatibility a major point from the outset. It's using the same basic 5e framework, just overhauling certain areas throughout. Theoretically, a table could be a mix of 2014 and 2024 builds, although the players would pretty much have to commit one way or the other in terms of class and subclass features.

They can get a great deal now. There were some great deals on physical book at Amazon.com this week too, I got Tasha's delivered for less than $20. There were some books for less than $10 before tax and shipping.
But yes, to see any real savings I had to turn on show owned content in the store. Meh not surprising but still disappointing with so much new stuff.

True-ish.
The standard line is that it *is* 5e. They aren't actually doing any big changes (even within the UA's, they are more or less trimming in some places, adding in others -- but that's classes, and you can strip all the classes out, drop in completely new ones, and it is still D&D), just minor ones to more or less unify and settle the rules after a decade of minor changes.
WotC is calling it 2024 5e, essentially, and is making a point that it is NOT 6e.
We'll probably end up calling it "5.5e" or "5.25d" because, in the end, the simple truth is that you are going to be able to sit down and play the game using either 2014 or 2024 rule sets for the vast majority of the game, with 2024 adding some newer features on top of the existing stuff, and tweaking litle things to keep it current.
So to describe it as 6e is outright wrong, while describing it as 5e is not.

We don't know if it's 5.5e, 6e or what, we'll find out at sometime between now and when it releases, inclusive. We can share opinions on what we think it should be described as...but until WotC releases and officially declares what it's called, anyone's guess is as good as another's. Not that it matters - we all know what people are referring to.

Anyways, yeah, I was kind of hoping that the 40% would be wider. However, since WotC took over, DDB seems to have been slowly heading towards the corporate attitude (manifest here as, "put on a sale, put a couple of items on 40% discount then we can advertise it as upto 40% off", whereas before, it seemed like DDB would put everything at X% off, and just have a a few exceptions), so I can't say I'm particularly surprised.
I'm tempted to get the MM, it would be easier for going to the LGS. On the other hand, it really depends on whether I'm going whole hog on 1D&D...even at 40% off, it's a steep price for a year's use (give or take). Choices, choices.

Where did they say it's not 6e? Not where you've inferred it, but they've said it was 5.5e or whatever? Because to my recollection, they've said it was an evolution of 5e and that it would be compatible with it, but they haven't said what edition it was.

No. The 2024 core rulebooks are updating the fifth edition ruleset. The books will be compatible with the adventures and supplements you own today, but they will offer players and Dungeon Masters new options and opportunities for adventure. The evolution of fifth edition has shown us it’s less important to create new editions of the game and more important to grow and expand the game you love with each new product.

I have played BECMI "adventures and supplements" with AD&D 1e rules. I have played AD&D 1e AND D&D 5e "adventures and supplements" with Scarlet Heroes rules. Anything that has a new PHB and DMG IS a new edition, especially if the old PHB's and DMG's are incompatible with the new versions. It is irrelevant what a marketing dept says. What matters is the eye test of the consumer.
AD&D 2nd edition had two Player's Handbooks (1989, and the revised 1995 one), and two Dungeon Master's Guides (same years)
D&D 3rd edition had the revised 3.5 edition PHB and that was still compatible with 3rd edition content, same for the Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual. These were then followed up with the Player's Handbook II, Dungeon Master's Guide II, and Monster Manual II through V
4th edition had the Player's Handbook 1, 2, 3, Races: Dragonborn, and Races: Tieflings, Dungeon Master's Guide 1 and 2, and Monster Manuals 1, 2, and 3
The 2024 revised Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master's Guide for D&D fifth edition are looking to be pretty much 100% backwards compatible, at least insofar as Xanathar's Guide to Everything and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything are. Obviously variant rules replace older options so you can't be a 2014 bard and a 2024 bard at the same time. But you can still play a 2024 bard using current subclasses for example.
It may not be "very much of a new edition", but is IS a new one. If you want to suggest that this new edition is 5.5 like 3.5 was to 3.0, fine.
It is not a basic and fundamental mechanical change on the level of 2nd Edition to 3rd edition, or 3rd edition to 4th edition, or 4th edition to 5th edition. It may be an update but it is not a new edition.
EDIT: That said, the flash sale is indeed a bit underwhelming for me. Mostly everything I haven't bought yet isn't even showing a sale price at this time.
The flash sale is 40% off on stuff I already own, so yeah, not too impressed.
D&D 2024 retains most backwards compatibility but does make significant changes. Whether to call that a new release, a new point release, or something else, is aesthetic. It's not a contract-breaking change, your existing characters and adventures still work with no more than trivial updates, but by that standard AD&D 2e wasn't actually a new edition, the only edition jumps with contract-breaking changes were 2e->3e, 3.5e->4e, and 4e->5e.
