While I wasn’t expecting the PHB to acknowledge artificers, and they are playable as is, it feels odd now that they don’t have weapon mastery. I’m still hoping for some extra-textual comment from Jeremy Crawford on whether he’d recommend giving them masteries in weapons for which they have proficiency (similar to the other half-casters).
I'm starting to wonder if Artificer will be in the DMG (same book as the magic items, presumably), as an option. It was mentioned in the first UAs, at least.
i hope they are in some offical book that allows them to get more subclasses bc not getting anything new for like 5 years hurt their numbers so badly
How does the Fighting Initiate feat from Tasha’s work now?
It says you can pick one fighting style from fighter class. On the one hand, fighting style feats aren’t part of classes now. On the other, if this feat does allow us to take a fighting style feat, does it effectively allow us to sidestep the prerequisite that they all have, that you must have Fighting Style class feature?

Crawford specifically mentioned at GenCon that they are working on something for the Artificer for a future book, but didn't elaborate further
Jeremy acknowledged during Gen Con that they have plans for the Artificer. I think it's unlikely to be in the DMG.
Glad to have acknowledgment on this, I was expecting it to be when ever Eberron got an update, but it would be nice for Artificer to get the DMG treatment, bring it away from just the Magitech setting class. Afterall all my Rock Gnomes are artificers.

fair enough tho its going to annoy all the people who enjoy artificer if its another tashas situation and they cant add anything else too it so it basically becomes a one and done
I'm REALLY wondering if existing characters with subclasses that aren't in the 2024 PHB will be playable via DDB.
For instance: hexblade warlock, twilight domain cleric, way of the sun soul monk. I understand, in theory, how you can bring those characters forward to 2024 rules - but how do you use them in DDB? Or are players stuck using a paper character sheet for them?
I'm REALLY wondering if existing characters with subclasses that aren't in the 2024 PHB will be playable via DDB.
I really can’t imagine DDB deciding that switching off the service to anyone who hasn’t bought the 2024 books is a sensible move. Certainly not in the near future and especially when WotC knows their goodwill from the community is a little precarious.
They've spent too much time saying it;'s not a new edition and it's all the same to then turn around and say "but you can't use the old stuff on the website we own"

While DnDB devs haven't stated what changes to the site will happen under 2024 rules, I can easily make guesses on how they will do it. They have a tag called (Legacy) which they use to distinguish rules that have been updated. If you own (Legacy) content you get to keep (Legacy) content, if you do not own (Legacy) content, you have no access to (Legacy) content, nor the ability to purchase it. Me, I own most of it, I did miss a few freebee's and old UA's that were posted to the forums way back in the day. As I seldom read the news and updates parts of the forums, as I primarily use this site because I'm stuck as the forever DM. (Why I buy all the books)
The odds are, if you have legacy Classes/species/Races owned, then you will have a checkmark or dropdown option to make a 2014 or a 2024 ruleset character. That dropdown/check mark will probably limit which content you have access to with that character. But not what campaigns you can join. I am guessing the campaign creator will also have a checkmark or dropdown to indicate which ruleset we use as DM.
---
This is important and I hope DnDB has already thought to do this, because a lot of "Partnered" content is designed for 2014, not 2024. And if DnDB plans to keep using partnered content, which is good for WotC, D&D, and DnDB, then being able to set the rulesets used in a campaign and in character creation is essential for good online play.
If the dev team forgot to do this, or the team that would have done this but got laidoff by Hasbro, I will facepalm hard when it all goes live. Because you just know a new round of videos will pop up.
They've spent too much time saying it;'s not a new edition and it's all the same to then turn around and say "but you can't use the old stuff on the website we own"
when two statements are false.
While they are marketing "not a new edition" and not reading the definition of the word. (It's the same game, updated edition, ie a game patch or expansion in video game terms) They have never said you can't use the old rules and content on the website they own. What they did say, paraphrased 'if you use the new rules, those supersede the old rules' meaning if the table/DM is using 2024, then any rules that have been updated are the ones everyone should be using. But you will still have access to the (Legacy) rules on DnDB if you purchased them, like I have as a forever DM.

I think you've misunderstood what I said, I was replying to the person above who was worried they would turn off the legacy stuff to say there was no way they'd do that after making such a big deal of it all being the same edition. So rather than "two statements being false" what I said is exactly what you just said in a different way
First, thanks to all for the discussion. It's been good.
Second, I don't think my post upthread was clear.
My concern is on D&D Beyond, how will we convert 2014 characters into the 2024 rules when they have a subclass not covered in the 2024 PHB?
Let's say I have a 5th level Levistus tiefling paladin (oath of redemption) built using the 2014 rules. I understand, in theory, at least, how to rebuild that character using 2024 rules in terms of species and class. But will D&D Beyond allow characters built using the 2024 rules have subclasses from the 2014 rules? Or are we just SOL unless/until those subclasses get their own 2024 treatment down the road?
This thread is about rules compatibility in general, not D&D Beyond. At this time, we don't have any specific information to share on D&D Beyond's implementation. Once the team has the details ready to share, an announcement or post will be made.

Obviously I'm just a guy making a guess, so take this with a grain of salt.
My guess is that the 5.0 PHB/MM/DMG will be legacy'd in favor of the 5.5 versions. So I'd expect the additional cleric/wizard subclasses from the PHB to no longer be purchaseable.
But I'll be surprised if they legacy Xanathar's and Tasha's right out of the gate. Since I assume we'll have a while until they start making 5.5 versions of the majority of those subclasses and legacy them then. The PHB/DMG/MM got a much better sale this summer than Tasha's or Xanathar's. So they didn't have the same "Let's squeeze some cash out of these before we stop selling them." feel.

While respecting the intention to keep this conversation on topic - I’m very much looking forward to that next announcement/post. I’m sure a lot of us will have many questions.
Above I asked if the Fighting Initiate feat in Tasha’s still does anything. I think the answer has to be that it doesn’t. RAW the Fighter class no longer contains fighting styles (though it may access them) and if the feat did anything at all, it’s existence would invalidate the prerequisites for the Fighting Style feats in PHB 2024, and it can’t have been the intention for the prerequisites only to apply to people without access to Tasha’s!
I can't really give a RAW answer to the Fighting Initiate feat compatibility. It can be interpreted to allow either version of Fighting Styles. I've passed that one up to the team.

The digital version of the 2014 PHB will continue to be available in the D&D Beyond marketplace, though it will be deprioritized in the marketplace listings in favor of the 2024 version.

With regard to Hexblade, the only thing that is redundant is the CHA to attacks and damage. Almost all other features are not present in the 2024 base class: armor and shield proficiency, spell list, hexblade's curse, etc.
What was killed was making it a worthwhile dip.
You misspelled subclass.
I said class. And I meant class.
You typed "worthwhile dip" but clearly meant "worthwhile subclass"
