I am playing a human druid in Out of the Abyss. A sentient blade called dawnbringer , which is the same as sun blade with exception that dawnbringer is sentient, singled me out and has chosen me to be it's wielder due to my "pure intentions"
Problem is.... I am not proficient with long swords.
Is there a way a character could "train" in said weapon, however long it may take, to become proficient. Is there anything that dictates this as possible?
I was thinking that the sentient blade would essentially train me in how to wield her correctly, "NO no, tuck your elbows closer to your body when swinging me horizontally. And widen your stance! You will be pushed over in a second with those clumsy feet"and in time my skills with a long sword would improve.
Or is this something that would have to be homebrewed?
I think for the training thing as you describe it, that would have to be homebrewed. If I recall, one can learn certain proficiencies, like languages and tools, overtime, as a downtime activity. This is written up in either the PHB or the DMG, I forget. It takes a certain number of days and costs a certain amount per day. It's not too hard, if your DM is agreeable, to work out something similar to that for a specific weapon. Alternatively, there may be a feat that gives you such proficiency?
RAW, take a feat is the easiest. Or multiclass into something that grants martial weapon proficiency (Barbarian, Fighter, Paladin, Ranger, Hexblade Warlock)
Unofficially, see if your DM will let you spend training time like you can for languages and tools.

Issue's been resolved. I dont know how yet, but DM said he will figure something out. My idea is that Dawnbringer would instruct my druid in proper use and technique, possibly granting proficiency in using Dawnbringer, but only Dawnbringer since she's essentially acting as a tutor while im wielding her
. I wouldnt be getting proficiency in long/short swords as at the very least that would require long term training.
It is a longsword with the finesse property. Ask you DM if they can rule "it weighs and feels as balanced as a scimitar".
And in exchange, the DM reminds you "it strongly resists being parted from its wielder for any length of time"; therefore it won't respond well if you attempt to use a weapon in your other hand, thus negating the light property benefit a scimitar.
Talk to the DM about allowing your proficiency with scimitar to work with the weapon. Given the various similarities (LS is slashing and typically 1 handed, short SS and Scimitar are both 1D6 weapons) it shouldn’t be a problem. That is the fix I would use as a DM.
Really, if the DM thinks it would be cool for you to have this weapon and you agree, it can just be handwaved that something about the weapon's magic or the mind within it gives you proficiency with it. A Druid gaining a single weapon proficiency or even just being able to apply their PB to attacks with that specific weapon is not going to seriously disrupt the balance of combat.
You could take the race Astral elf which has the ability to add and change a skill or weapon proficiency. Plus, you get misty step. It's a spelljammer race.
Oh, my bad, you're already human. I thought you were planning a character. Multiclass one level in a martial class.
My dm gave me an awakened great sword that members of my order of cleric could use as if proficient as a trait. So I can't just pick up any great sword

Thanks for the help guys!

There is a feat: [feat]Weapon Master[/feat]
You gain +1 to either Str or Dex, and proficiency in 4 weapons of your choice (simple or martial).

There is the training in Xanathar's that lets you get tools and languages but you could suggest it a way to your DM.
I think you could multi-class a level in a ranger and get martial weapons.

Another RAW but very impractical (and not at all recommended) way would be to die and get Reincarnated as an Elf. They get proficiency in Longswords.

Are you proficient with shortswords?
ANOTHER HAND HAS TOUCHED THE BEACON.
(Sorry.)
Alas, Druids are not proficient with shortswords.

I did not catch race and class the first time I read it.
So that leaves feats, multiclassing, and downtime activity (in game months).
search for gmbinder learn new proficiency. its a nice homebrew set.
