Basically, it only allows access to the adventure on the Sources menu. You will not be able to access the monsters through the Game Rules -> Monsters menu, and the same for Magic Items, Spells, etc. I think its worth the extra $5 to just have access everywhere on the site for the content.
thinking of buying HODQ. Save $5 by getting compendium only. Downside?
cant use magic weapons in char sheet ( but could homebrew ). Is that it ?

You would save more than 5$ by using a coupon though, so might as well buy whole book with coupon than just compendium. Here:

Coupons don't apply to piecemeal (or at least as far as I know they don't).
