There is currently a Fighter Archetype called Knight in the Unearthed Arcana that does some of what you're looking for and a feat called Mounted Combatant.
There was also a Cavalier archetype that made it into an earlier Unearthed Arcana, but I'd say it's probably been dumped in favour of the more-recent Knight (who also has "Born to the Saddle") for the upcoming Xanathar's book.
Compared to Pathfinder, which seems to actively hate anyone who doesn't want to optimize a mount along with their character, 5e isn't very mount-oriented in its current official form, beyond a few vague rules and the Mounted Combatant feat.

Well, horses do tend to do better on paths than in dungeons or against dragons.

Which is why the best Cavalier is a halfling Ranger mounted on their wolf Animal Companion!
Well with that thought it does stick you to the ground. But I tend to think outside the box. On land your character may be right. But thinking through things you may forget about the air. Pegasus would make things a tad bit different. Not to mention that if the character could somehow tame a dragon well I would like to think that it would change the field of battle. I am thinking what of water.
Actually to correct the posters in this thread take a look at the product page for Xanather's it lists the Cavalier as one of the few classes confirmed for inclusion, it was also featured in revised subclasses recently.

I knew I must have missed it. There's too many confusingly-named UA titles and no indexing.
First brought out in Dragon magazine #72 April 1983 a long with the Barbarians class. Made into a cartoon show Series in 1984. Made it in the Unearthed Arcana in 1985 . At which point I had lost my book store due to closing and lost track of the game.
I am glad to see it's not Dead. But have been hoping that it be more than a side note. I still think that it's a very good class of fighter that should never fall into the cracks of time and be forgotten.
Their was a lot of rules to get used to so to start off the player from scratch. He's a type of Elite Warrior that really couldn't go out on his own until he reached level 6 due to constant training. Having to learn all weapons . And to be honest he probably wouldn't be able to leave to find a name for himself until level 7 in the big world. Due to his code of honor. That's when he's at his best.

In the future will it be brought back?
