Everything is wrong with loxodon. They look absolutely, immersion-breakingly ridiculous and their entire species is basically nothing but a bunch of tired, regurgitated elephant tropes wrapped up in basic The Big Guy D&D abilities. They don't even fit THEIR OWN setting, let alone this one. There is no reason for loxodon to exist in a setting where minotaurs have been the Beasty Big Guys for multiple decades, and that holds true for both D&D and Magic.
Heh. 'Course, this entire thread is basically a conga line of 'Settle your shit, ghost*****', and I'm aware other players have absolutely no issue with the dumb things. That's fine. My hatred for them, however, is as deep and unshakable as it is likely irrational; I absolutely despise that godawful race and flat-out refuse to allow them at my table when I'm running a game. Which is my right as a DM just as much as it is a player's right to tell me they don't want to play the game I want to run.
I cannot, even slightly, take those stupid elephant-faced pillars of nonsense even the remotest bit seriously. They are goofy, poorly designed, and ill-fitting in the extreme and I can't have them in my games if I want my games to retain even the faintest degree of seriousness of tone. But because they have two and a half arms and good racial stats, I never stop hearing about them. Especially from one of my players in particular. If loxodon disappeared from the face of Creation tomorrow, it'd be about four months of ceaseless badgering about "but whyyyyyyyyy can't I play my cool one-man-band elephant bard guy?!" too late.
Vedalken are basically Magic's take on Vulcans. A race is much more than its looks and stats.
That said, can we get back to the point of this thread, which is NOT "settle your sh*t ghostb*tch" (I don't think there's any more to be said) but Theros?
On which note, the Oath of Heroism finally makes sense to me in this setting. Although the College of Eloquence annoys me, because it doesn't feel thematically distinct from the College of Lore.
Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
I think the idea of dropping MtG books is just lore dumps on the cards, and maybe to appeal 5e to a different group of people. Which meh okay whatever.
5e is definitely vibing like 2e where we got tons of settings, worlds, and tons of optional books. I'm all for more races, monsters, archtypes in the 5e mix - and if these are opportunities to sneak them into 5e - neat.
What I'm really on edge about, is I know by the description this book is going to have neat things I'll want to use - but will be a PAIN IN THE ARSE to use them on DDB because they won't work. Heck we're going on 4mos soon and the Mark spells don't work from Eberron. Getting a lot more difficult to spend money on DDB stuff cuz of that factoid. But omg we got an encounter tracker - sigh.
Yes, the sea god is female, a mermaid, and weilds a bident, not a trident (god is that a stupid word, bident) but it is still similar to posiden
Theros is definitely not a "real greek mythology setting". What makes it be a real greek mythology setting? It just has similar races and slightly similar gods.
I would prefer a book detailing the rules of actually playing in Ancient Greece to this. Now that this book is coming out, that never will happen. It isn't something I really want to happen, never really thought of that before today, but it is what I'd prefer to this world.
It's already happened :)
Check out "Odyssey of the Dragonlords", at Modiphius. It's a fantastic setting, with lots of juicy extras for not just adding monsters, but adding staples of Greek myth like paths of destiny, foretold by oracles, interactive deities that are all-too-human, Titans and their devilry, new takes on old monsters, etc. It feels like "Jason and the Argonauts" or "Clash of the Titans". Best of all, the setting info is wrapped up inside a 1st - 15th+ level adventure path.
Definitely worth a look (and you can get the Player's Guide for free from DriveThruRPG).
Where is Dragonlance? Spelljammer? Planescape? Dark Sun? Instead we get M:tG money-grabs. Gotta cash-in on 'em all! Blech.
They are grabbing a lot less than they could if they'd offer products with an actual demand.

I agree with the first part
i agree with the second part
Not only do I agree with the third part, didja hear we’re getting a fully animated dice roller too? Double sigh.
My setting has room and desire for both Loxodon and Minotaurs. I love both races. Why am I told bad wrong fun?
Except I’m not - at least, not by WotC. They’re even giving me Leonin, whom I mourned back when they gave me Tabaxi (I thought maybe they only had room for one cat race in 5e rules; I prefer Leonin).
D&D 5e has room for lots of different optional modules. You don’t need to enjoy it if I do. I don’t need to enjoy it if you do. Etc.

I am so definitely sure they're coming, we just have to be patient. You guys and many others are indicative of how badly we want them (I am also very keen for them), however, those who're forever stating their disappointment over new/crossover content will also be the first to complain when they've released those golden, treasured settings too soon and therefor only half baked and not up scratch. From all the passing comments from the head honchos on Todd Talks, Dev Notes, Dragon Talk, DnDBeyond: Unearthed Arcana and even their personal twitters, it is evident they are (at least) workshopping it. Even Merles has been openly championing reinvent Psionics since 2017! I would prefer to have this highly sought after material when it is ready and 100% viable in 5e and enjoy some other new stuff in the meantime. Rather than I-want-it-now-and-what-I-want-is-more-important-than-anyone-elses-want, only to have it fall flat because it couldn't reach the Golden Pedestal of Expectation we've all made for it. Sorry for the rant, just seeing all this complaining grinds my gears when parroting the same complaint over and over isnt going to help anyone (the complainers included), when we could just accept it and have fun with it while we wait patiently for shirtless sand dune psioncs and lazercannon, scro hatin' hippos.
tl;dr, it's being made/worked on, they're not ignoring us, they just making sure its good enough for us adoring (and expectant) fans.

Yeah, and we're still waiting on basic (and by that, I don't mean easy to implement, I mean that it's a necessary and highly valued asset expected of a digital platform) functionality to the character sheet like some decent inventory management. And the EB has been in beta for how long now and yet still doesn't have rich text in the descriptions.
I used to defend the pace of development here but I'm at a point where I'm just tired of seeing dev update after dev update of the same, "WIP" mentions with nothing actually happening except for some non-starters like this current initiative tracker alpha which is in a barely functional form that has limited utility. I remember saying to my players this time last year, "There are so many improvements so close to completion, just bear with it!"
Kinda over making excuses for them.

"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
Also, people are acting like spelljammer was some smash pop culture hit, instead of an attempt to justify different worlds within the prime material plane that is only really remembered for how utterly wacky, chaotic, and 90's it is.
Like, I would rather have Spelljammer than Theros, but can we please not kid ourselves by saying that it would be easy money for WOTC?
I think a lot of people are going to get utility out of the combat tracker, and having tools for DMs to use the system as well as the players is essential to keeping DDB competitive, but that's about as much leeway as I'm willing to give. I don't need an integrated dice roller -- if I'm playing in person I have physical dice, if I'm playing online I'm either using the forum dice roller for PBP or I'm on a VTT using its dice roller. To say nothing of add-ons that already do this. Focus on the intrinsic parts of the back end that only you can fix!
I'll be interested in a few of the new races, and I'll be interested in how the new subclasses work out of UA. I'm disappointed by the decision to reprint existing subclasses -- to me, that doesn't seem necessary. I suppose it's more useful for AL?

Remember that not everyone will have Xanathar's. Whilst it does benefit AL, this also lets new people just pick up the sourcebook for Theros and have access to the thematic subclasses. Kind of a one-stop shop.
Or maybe when he said people would be pleased, everyone automatically assumed that meant they would get exactly what they wanted, and people are now realizing that others have different wants than them, and WOTC can't make everybody happy.
Or, maybe he was saying what almost any corporation would say about the upcoming business year to their consumers.

Another medical problem. Indefinite hiatus. Sorry, all.

Would have preferred a new core book (Xanathar's came out in 2017, its now 2020)
Would have preferred a classic setting, instead of back to back crossover settings.
Crawford said we'd be happy with 2020. Not seeing it thus far.

Maybe the final book will be a Xanathar's 2.
