There was a Stranger Things Starter Kit, much in a similar vein to the Rick & Morty one, but instead of an adventure 'written' by Rick, it was written by Mike Wheeler. It's quite funny in a cheesy, meta kinda way, like you're playing a module given to you by your kid brother.
To be clear: I'm not saying BOO HISS NEVER MTG AGAIN.
My disappointment stems purely from the fact that I was unaware that "Theros" was a MTG thing, and suffering from a bit of early hype for a cool Greek Hero Myth supplement which was subsequently crushed by the knowledge that this book has absolutely ballslap nothing to do with "Greek Hero Myth" and is just another MTG supplement. For the folks who want another MTG supplement, enjoy! Glad you've got a second book in your series, us Wildemount folks salute you from atop our Horizonback tortoises.
But man...it might have legit been cool to see what came of a Greek Hero Myth supplement. odds are low, of course, Wizards only manages to touch something and avoid ruining it maybe one time in five, but man...still woulda been cool.
I think you're selling Theros very short. It's about as close to Greek/Roman influenced fantasy adventure as any company that wants to have an IP instead of dabble around in the Public Domain is ever going to get. Any closer and you'd be playing a "Disney's Hercules" RPG.

I don't play MtG, but the Theros setting has me intrigued. I think I'll definitely be getting it, if only to plunder it for ideas for my Thylea campaign that's in the embryonic stage at the moment.

I can't agree with this enough. Unless you actually want Zeus, Athena, etc in your games—and if you do, you have all the lore you need a hundred times over—Theros is as good as it gets. Ignore the other planes and MTG origin (easy to do), and it's exactly what I would've expected from any other Greek Myth setting.
I'm not boycotting this book. I'm not going to go whining to Wizards of the Coast about them not making Spelljammer or Planescape or Dark Sun (as much as I'd want them).
It just isn't what I asked for. In reality, did anyone ask for this? I hadn't heard anyone ask for a Theros book before this was announced. Anyone ask for this?
This is my point. Why are they doing this if we didn't ask for this?
Because it is easy. That's the reason.
Am I wrong?
I'm going to buy the book, I'm sure it is going to be good, and I'm going to use some of the content, my only complaint is that I didn't ask for this.
Sure, no one asked for it. You're right! But that doesn't matter diddlysquat and it's a waste of your time to follow that argument. As much as I want the things I want, like sand dunes and mind magic, they do not have to give it to us, they are not beholden to us!
Yeah sure, we can make a stand and say 'well they're not getting my money then, so there' but so what? They don't care about that either, and they don't have to. Firstly, yes, while they're doing it to make money, they're bring out the stuff THEY want to, that THEY deem marketable. They're the only ones who truly know what the people (as a majority) want as they have people whose daily job it is to collate that sort of marketing data. Secondly, DnD has the biggest fan base its EVER had so suffice it to say, there's more new players now than old players and the new players aren't not fussed about not getting the things they haven't heard of, they're gonna enjoy all the stuff thats coming out as its ALL new to them, just like Dark Sun and Spelljammer will be. And WotC will STILL make their money regardless if the old guard stamp their feet and boycott in a huff. WotC are changing with the times, hence how they've cornered so many new fans, so the old fans have to deal with some change too. We've already got a bunch of stuff from our happy, safe, nostalgic glory days of DnD (Curse of Strahd, Eberron, Yawning Portal, Elemental Evil, Mad Mage's Dungeon, etc) but there's GOTTA be room for new stuff too. Geez, Im happy to be wrong but as far as I can tell, Descent into Avernus is the first 100% fresh, non-throwback content we've had, the rest HAS been remakes or at least rehash hat tips.
All Im trying to say is WE'VE GOTTA STOP PARROTING THE SAME COMPLAINT OVER AND OVER because it's super groan worthy seeing everyone of these threads devolving into butthurt and whining. Besides, everything they bring out is SUPER fun anyway! And if we, the individual, doesn't like it, who cares!!! There'll be another release in a few months, and another after that, and another. We will get our happies soon, friends! We don't have to waste our energy complaining. I am old hat and also VERY excited for their take on Greek Mythology, M:tG content originally or not. As another poster said, Theros is as close to Greek Myth without just enacting existing Greek legends, in which case, there's dozens of war games already out there to do it in.
N.B. I can appreciate the fact that while i'm saying just deal with it and move on, I could also just deal with the repetitious "but I want Dark Sun/Spelljammer/Planescape". Im just saying, lets move past it and enjoy what we are getting, enjoy that DnD IS such a big thing now. Finally!
Hjalmar Gunderson, Vuman Alchemist Plague Doctor in a HB Campaign, Post Netherese Invasion Cormyr (lvl20 retired) Godfrey, Autognome Butler in Ghosts of Saltmarsh into Spelljammer Grímr Skeggisson, Goliath Rune Knight in Rime of the Frostmaiden DM of two HB campaigns set in the same world.
I wonder if the Lurker Below warlock patron may be in the book, you know those greek gods like to release the Kraken!! It could be and with the reprint of the Grave domain maybe the Revived Rogue. Just due to potentially related things to the setting maybe?

I'm 100% hoping so! The revived Rogue definitely fits the flavour of The Returned from Theros (the undead creatures with the golden masks who returned from the dead for unfinished business). Before they revealed the reprint of Grave Cleric I was certain Twilight Cleric was going to see the light of day. Shame (I doubt they'll roll out a new subclass when recycling one for the same class).
Weird of me, but Im looking forward to see how they mechanically replicate The Hundred Handed One and the Bestow mechanic for 5e.

I would think most of the UA 2019 end of year content could fit in pretty well. Rune Knight might have issues? And the Bee Ranger?
It is so odd that people will complain about a setting book. If you do not like the setting just don't buy it. Damn, its like you are forced to buy things you do not like. leave people alone to buy the things that they like. :) thanks
I don't think this is entirely the issue (being forced to buy it). I think the issue is, if we are getting this book, we are getting it in place of something else WOTC might have been working on instead. I think some of the complaints are from people who look at another MTG tie-in and think, what original-to-D&D setting like Dark Sun or Oerth might we have gotten instead, if they hadn't been spending the time and energy on getting out a tie-in from a different game?

Anyone else noticed that the pre-order bonus is only backgrounds? Does that mean there will only be backgrounds with it or that frames and themes are included with the purchase for everyone and just released with the book release? Or is this a new trend where we don't see frames + themes + backgrounds with every product (WotC)?

In seriousness, I find that I don't really have much opinion on the debate between old vs new settings (with one exception: gimme some Gothic Earth, biznatches!). I will say I'm disappointed to hear some of the upcoming content will just be reprints of old content, but that's been true of pretty much every book that's been released previously, soooo....eh.
One thing I am curious about though, is that the Theros book brings up supernatural gifts and god weapons...are these supposed to fit in with normal progression, or are these meant to add progression past 20th level?

I assume it is normal progression. There will also be Mythic Monsters (harder than legendary monsters), but I don't think they'll be higher than CR 30. They'll likely just have some new mechanics to make them godlike, and make them fit in with the current progression and CR systems.

Just a quick thing for those unaware of the timing. The setting book basically follows the current release of the second visit to Theros in the MtG card-game that is currently going on. It is very clear that they are releasing this book in time to get a chunk of the Magic players who might either be on the fence about dabbling in RPGs, are big MtG lore buffs who will buy just about any MtG content that might contain some choice lore bits, or just your standard cross-over MtG/D&D players who would find something like this interesting. Those three groups are the core audience on the MtG side for this book. Add that to any number of D&D players who might find parts of this book interesting enough to buy and you can definitely start to see enough of a market form to justify this splat-book. The best part is, for a decent portion of the target audience, the ad campaign is already running via the card game to build hype for this sort of thing, so less ad dollars need to be spent from the D&D side of the budget.

They also released Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica around the time Ravnica: Allegiance was released.
