I hope that you have not had too much trouble because of it. Where I live (moved here a few years ago), a good amount of people treat anyone not exactly like themselves (usually white, straight, and Christian) like absolute garbage. The way people can act makes me sick.
They don't have an issue with it. They just aren't used to it, because at our schools, you get bullied for interacting with someone of the opposite gender if you are not popular.
I “build” a character choosing a race/class concept that works. Then I pick a background, that complements, and start to write a character. Whoever the character ends up being is whatever I play.
I write a character, and however the character comes out, that’s what they are so that’s what I “build.” However the character comes out, that’s what they are so that’s what I play.
It doesn’t matter to me about sex, gender, ethnicity, skin color, age, sexual preference, any of it.
I play characters of differing genders partly because constantly playing the same gender as myself get a bit boring, and partly because some times I come up with an interesting backstory for a character of X gender and I play that character to see it through.
I have been DMing for so long that playing male, female or anything else doesn't even register as being "different" in my own head space. When I play, I play what ever character I like and never even give it a second thought. It seems stranger to me that people lock themselves into playing only one specific gender in a RPG.
I am so very sorry that you had such a negative experience with your group. You indicated that it had gotten better but your comments have led me to believe you are uncomfortable in your new surroundings and are being bullied. I do hope things have gotten better for you. I am not sure if you are still following this thread but there are a lot of great D&D groups out there.
Because most DM's and module designers are sexist. The far majority of characters in power are male and the DM's are male. They tend to let high Charisma female characters get away with using Persuasion more than they let male ones.
Not to mention the stereotypical female mind controllers (Anyone ever go up against a male Siren?)
There is no male Siren. Although in Greek mythology, Siren was not specifically female, the whole concept of the Siren (at least the Siren from the Odyssey) is that they lure male sailors to their death. Their singing is so beautiful that it causes the men to sail too close to the jagged rocks and reefs where the Siren make their home, tearing open the hull of the ship, which then sinks, and the sailors drown.
There is, however, mermen, or Tritons.

Like many others have said, I play female characters because that is what fits with the character concept. One of my favourite characters is transgender.

On could theorize that the Sirens were evil merfolk.
I initially started playing characters of opposite sex out of curiosity. Now I play characters of varying sex and gender because it doesn’t really matter.

sometimes for concept, sometimes to break it up, last.. 3 characters where female the current one is male simply to break it up.
Character concept is the reason why I sometimes play as a female character.
i (a male) almost always play female and i roll for gender unless the concept is specific

For me, simply because I based my fighter character on Lagertha Lothbrok, because she's awesome :)

I hope your group is one of them.
Sorry for confusing you. I meant that they weren't used to having a female character in the group. lol

I just kind of have a preference. I couldn't really tell you 'why' I prefer playing female characters over male.
