So I just had thought. Clearly there would be plenty humanoid monsters that would make great character races. My personal favorite right now is the doppleganger. Though since we have the changeling, that makes that idea redundant.
Which of your favorite monsters do you wish Wizards would make a playable character?
I second undead. It would be nice to play as a variety of undead monsters, and I think it would be fun for one shots during Halloween. Archdevils, succubi, and other demons and devils would also be nice. Wereanimals would also be good.
Everyone always wants to play the non-humanoids. But the game is designed around playing a humanoid. Only current non-humanoid legal race is centaur, who are Fey.
But consider these three humanoids:
Dire Corby (bird, whose scream really screws with everyone)
Grung (Poison skin, leaping frog - be a monk and grapple)
Nagpa (Treat the 17th CR one as a 15th level wizard. Make the corruption and paralysis start with a low DC and low uses per day, increase in level)
A Roper .... but the classic version that was uber-intelligent. That could be recreated if the Roper had a Ring of Intelligence on one of its tentacles.

Great question!
Off the top of my head, the mind flayer would be great, or an undead.

For other monsters, fey would be nice.

Wemic
She/Her Player and Dungeon Master
Grung.
They are playable, but technically they aren't offical.
I'd rework their history, and racial stats a bit.
Can it be home-brew?

Mine is a Hoghawler. (Home-brew)
It can be one that you've made, or someone else made.
Oh god, I just checked and GRUNG are in fact a playable race! YEAH!
Next character will be a Grung rogue. Yeah, I'm slow. So what - want a hug? he he he
MODRONS! I want to play a rogue modron.

Those sound awesome
Why just be a centaur...
when you can be a pegasus??
Also, I would like to play a Sphinx and start every 10th sentence with "Riddle me this..."
(Also, we don't have a monster stat for this, but I would also like Baurier, the planescape centaurs, but goats instead of horses.)
